@Xavier, Sat. Jan. 7, 2:30pm, FS1/970AM

Expected to lose all four of the Creighton, Xavier, GT & Nova games frankly, but not in this fashion. Very disappointing ball movement, defense & zany lineups at times. Oh well, surprise me & finally play well in DC Monday.

GENTLEMEN, ,have a good evening until next blow out see you then

maybe you should retard your expectations of this team or just don't watch them.. They are 2-2... 2 loses to top 15 teams... Both loses they didn't give up and played hard until the end... Honestly, what do you expect from this team this year?

I generally agree that patience is in order.
But part of playing hard till the last whistle includes defense. And there are far too many possessions guys are taking off defensively.
On some level that's a matter of effort and discipline.
Guys need to be sat down if they blow their defensive assignment. That's the only thing that will get through to the players. They value their playing time.

Terrible game to watch. Couldn't make stops. Sumner went wherever he wanted - too many easy baskets inside.
We will continue to have big trouble guarding the opposition's big guards.
Mussini needs picks to get his shot off.
Fruedenberg does not look for his shot, passes ball as soon as he receives it.
Xavier was hot from the three point line.
Hopefully we look a lot better against them at MSG on the 29th.

It seems like they start playing defense with 5 minutes left in these games where they're losing.. Not sure why they aren't pressing more and generally up in their opponents face more earlier in these games... Granted, they are a young team and I'm hoping as time continues to pass that there is improvement in the area of defense.. Maybe Mullin and staff worked more on the offensive schemes and now as they get comfortable with that aspect of the game, they will start working harder on defense during practice and games. Orrrrrrrr.... Maybe I'm just a homer when it comes to this team :D

I think staff should consider starting over with its recruiting what we now have is not even in the same leaguewith the rest of the confr. This may include the staff lol

How bout stop recruiting these Euros. They suck.

Frederick Weiss, anyone? ;)

Maybe next year Frued can be Porzingis?
Yeah I know Dreams are great,

To me he looks like he knows the game but at this point in his career it is just moving to quickly for him.

That jump shot pass he invented was pretty interesting

Until we get adequate Bigs we will struggle against most decent teams. Of course once we get some bigs we probably won't have decent guards. We are ST John's

Right from the start we allowed their guards to blow past our defense with no help underneath. Looked like a half ass effort to me. And when we did try to switch to stop the ,drive they handed off for an easy put back.

I agree they value their playing time. But when your coach takes out the lineup that gave your team a 16-1 run and put you up 9 points--and you're one of the players who is sitting on the bench while 3 white guys who had absolutely no business being in the game are on the floor instead of you--then maybe you lose a bit of heart.

"Freshman want to play, sophomores want to start, juniors want to score, and seniors want to win!"

"Priorities change, as you get older"

Btw, this is father of that short Butler PG.

Can't disagree with that. And it seems like every team has a bunch of 6'5" / 6'6" strong kids that can get to the basket or hit a 3. We hsve Ellison and Bashir. Is anyone going over video with these kids 1-on-1?

Post Game Quotes

St. John's Head Coach Chris Mullin...

On his thoughts on the game:

"We were very soft. Defensively, we were porous. Basically, we let them do whatever they wanted to do. We scored 82 points, but the game was basically over. We're not going to have a problem scoring. We have scorers and we know that. We have to put our imprint on the game as a group and individually, and that didn't happen. In the first half, we shot 34 percent so when you begin games like that you're not playing with the intensity and aggressiveness on the defensive end."

On Edmond Sumnur:

"I like him a lot; really good player. He has nice size and quickness and a good change of pace. He's a real good player."

On the team chemistry:

"We're balancing building and trying to win at the same time. I'm conscience these guys are young and inexperienced, but I don't want to use that as an excuse to not compete and try to win. We need experience. We need these games. They are going to pay off for us long term and I know that, but in the moment I want them to compete and try to win each and every game. We have a really nice group of young players so games like this they'll be good teaching tools...On some given nights we're able to play with anybody and some nights we struggle; that shows our inconsistency and youth."

Freshman Guard Marcus LoVett...

On playing well near his hometown:

"Anytime I get to play close by [my hometown], friends and family get to see me it's a good feeling to get to play in front of them. Anytime I come to any arena, I want to do good for them."

On his message to the team:

"We just have to stay in the gym and keep working hard each and every day, pushing each other. Xavier is a great team and they kept fighting hard."

If you guys want to try to make yourselves feel a little better, the Boneyard is having a meltdown because Diallo chose Kentucky.

Nova, Creighton,Butler, Xavier are arguably Top 15 Programs and haven't suffered through 15 Years of Chaos like we have. Mullin is not a Miracle worker. he pulled together a Team last year that had been left Zero by Stevie Wonder. Lavin might not have won a game with our team last year! But, I digress.

we have 2 Legitimate BE players on our team and both, are exceptional , 6 foot, lefty guards whose games are essentially identical. They are small by comparison to nearly all the Guards they will face. their talent on any given night will determine where we will finish in the Standings. Right now, we are in better shape than DePaul, Providence, G'town having won 2 Games. Our Talent does not allow us to compete with the 4 Teams that will fight it out this year. We should be happy , not to finish last. I think we can hold our own with the teams below us in the Conference.

As for all the shots, some cheap, directed at Mullin. This Team could have Red Auerbach, Bobby Knight and John Wooden and Mike K on our Bench and the results wouldn't change. It won't until we get a full Roster of 8 legitimate BE level talent, including a big Man and 2 Burly Forwards built like NFL linebackers that can go to the hoop and also shoot a J. how far are we from that?

I don't know , does anyone at this point? A question to ask is Matt A. finding the job more difficult than at Iowa State? Maybe our Admissions policies are not as lenient as the Cyclones? Maybe we need some transfers or 5th year players, that every team has these days. Blaming Mullin for Player errors , when they are outclassed , doesn't seem fair to me. The team plays hard and didn't give up, today or against Creighton. Our 2 guards are Special Players and everyone knows it , but, they alone cant make up for the lack of a legitimate Front Court game .
I hope Ponds and Lovett stick around long enough to be part of building this Program to a competitive level. They are the Linch Pins to doing it.

I will preface this by saying I am a major Mullin homer (as my avatar indicates.)

I think we have more than 2 legitimate BE players. Bashir Ahmed, Williams, and Owens all can make the cut. They all sucked today, which was unfortunate.

But I **have** to believe that chemistry,or lack thereof, is playing a major role in the performance of this team and the development of those legitimate BE players we do have.

When guys like Mussini and Freduenberg --both mid-major players at best--get 19 minutes and 11 minutes, respectively (much of that when we in the lead and in contention) then you just have to say WTF??

I hope Ponds and Lovett do stick around. And I hope that high-level recruits looking in don't think they will be usurped by guys who don't deserve to be on the same court as them.

There is a reason that Syracuse has had at least a five hundred record in conference for 34 out of the last 35 seasons (FYI the one year they were below five hundred, 7-9 in 2005-2006, they went on to win the Big East tournament anyway). Even if you hate them you have to admire that level of consistency.

After we beat them last year I was ready to see them fall apart, but they somehow picked themselves up made the tournament and had a run to the final four. After the 33 point beat down we handed them, I thought they would be a three win team in the ACC this season. However they just beat Miami and are sticking it to a good Pittsburgh team today. Say what you want about Jim Boheim, his teams win every year and even during a down year it is unwise to count them out.

On his best day, Ghostzapper would beat this Syracuse team by 30 lengths.

No surprise with this game but I continue to be more than surprised at the success of Xavier, Butler and Creighton in the league.
