That's like saying Nicolai Volkoff teamed with the Iron Sheikh. Won't help your popularity :)
Now that's a blast from the past. The golden age of wrestling; Mean Gene Okerlund, Bobby the Brain Heenan, Captain Lou Albano, George the Animal Steele, the Big Hillbilly, and of course the lovely Miss Elizabeth (R.I.P) who always had to have her honor protected by Macho Man Randy Savage against the likes of the Animal etc.

And to bring it back on topic, not one of those mentioned will be at MSG Saturday night. For the Michigan game. I, of course, will be in my new seat, a mere one row behind my old seat.

By big hillbilly I hope you're talking about Haystacks Calhoun, not Hillbilly Jim.

My recently deceased cat was named after Captain Lou. Maher can confirm if he reads my facebook posts. Also immortalized by NRBQ. Oh and Lauper too, kind of.

I remember Bruno Sanmartino and Argentina Apollo and Coco Brazil.

Since this has devolved into a wrestling thread, just thought I'd mention for fans of the more recent vintage that WWE Hall of Famer and Tag Team Champion Bubba Ray Dudley, now known as Bully Ray, is a graduate of our beloved alma mater ( and a fraternity brother of yours truly).

And to keep it basketball related, I expect Ian Jackson to show out Saturday vs Michigan.

Wow. Did not know that.

Did you call him Mark? And did he break out any tables?

Yes, Hillbilly Jim. I rmembered the "Big Hillbilly" since the plot , uh, coincidence, ;) leading up to his debut consisted of him being in the front row as a fan over several weeks and the announcers always said "who is that big hillbilly?". It's fuzzy now but I think he went into the ring to defend Miss Elizabeth and the rest is history.

Back to Michigan:

In a major upset, St. John's defeated #1-ranked Michigan 75-74 in the final of the 1965 ECAC Holiday Festival at Madison Square Garden. The game took place on January 2, 1965, and featured St. John's Sonny Dove, who scored 23 points, pacing the Redmen's rally in the final 10 minutes.

(AI generated so it really was the 1964 Festival which ended on 1965, pesky calendar getting in the way.)

Eight teams, Princeton and Bill Bradley, Michigan and Cazzie Russell who later became Knick teammates. Over 15K for the first afternoon and over 18K for the evening, set a new record for the two "cards" as the Times put it.

As indicated by my name, I attended the NIT later in 1965. I guess I needed to turn 10 first before I was allowed to go to smoky MSG. Although maybe I went to the circus first, who knows.
