Will our poor season affect recruiting?

We had terrible teams for about 8 years and we hired Lavin and he had a top 5 recruiting class right away.

Top players look to go with a coach that gets his players to the NBA. Coach Lavin has players in the NBA. Regardless if you think he is a good coach or not, it's still a reality.

Losing doesn't help...but how many players out there do you think doubt that they could make a huge difference in the W column? So I think it's not as important as you would think.

And, we weren't exactly at the very bottom of the league. It's not like they lost 20+ games. Maybe you view this as a poor season, but there are others that would disagree.

Honestly, I'd be shocked if our freshmen and sophs never get to play in the NCAA tourney here - and so would most of us. This season was a step in the rebuilding process.

If you think that hese years compare to Roberts first two teams, remember that Lavin schedules a pretty tough pre-Big East schedule, and under NR we were losing to former cupcakes with regularity.

Lavin is great. Just what we needed. He has every aspect of our program in better shape since before he commenced SJU coaching.
Quick! Name a single player recruited by or signed by Steve Lavin that would have even dribbled the basketball around Taffner Field House for Norm Roberts?
Let's see. There was. Let me think.
There was.

all the best

One concern that I have is that our poor results and horrific end to the season will affect recruiting. All the top kids always say they want to go to a school that will challenge for a National Championship. It seems more imperative then ever that Lavin has a good won loss record next year to continue to draw the top recruits. Could our dismal performance this year have steered the likes of Martin, Lawrence and Wainright in a different direction?

NO! Uconn was on probation this year, they lost their Hall of Fame coach, their program is in basketball limbo as they do not even know what conference name they will have to put on their home court......yet, they are involved with more elite players than St. John's.
We had only two major prospects we pursued for 2013 due to scholarship limitations but we may not fill any even though a scholie can be withheld at the coach's discretion. I know this is not a popular option but it is one that needs to be utilized when the parts do not fit. The situation in our backcourt is dire, to say the least so that has become a priority but recruiting well is not only about wins and losses, it is about making hard decisions with current players to balance the team and position it for future success.

UConn is involved with exactly 0 elite players in the class of 2013.

Does anyone really think Marco and Jones would lock themselves in Taffner Hall if Lavin needed slots? And is Balamou really that important going forward? The fact is that we have nobody good on the hook. Does anyone who admires Lavin's recruiting find that unusual? Not too many programs strike out completely year to year. We did have that good class but the players didn't arrive or pan out as promised. It would sure be nice to have a couple of signees to offset the coming cliff dive as our young team suddenly ages. I just hope we have a year like 2010 before it hits the fan.

There you go again. You want 'a couple of signees' when meanwhile Jordan is our only target and there are like 3 kids in the whole Top 100 still out there. Care to name them?

Damned if you do, damned if you don't in the world we live in according to Bobre.

I think the way some who post here feel about Steve not likely to play for him, but plenty of good players will be playing their ball here.

We don't have to hit a homerun in recruiting as often as you might think. Gonzaga and Butler are perenially ranked in the top 20. Since 2008 over 90% of their recruits are 3 star players.

You can do that if you can coach. They have two of the best.

Does anyone who admires Lavin's recruiting find that unusual? Not too many programs strike out completely year to year.

How many programs had the league ROY on their roster two years in a row?

Hardly a recruiting strikeout.

Jakarr was recruited two years ago with Pelle and Sanchez who never showed. Lavin got credit for a fantastic class and wound up playing with six guys after Nuri left. Then DLo recruited Branch. Obekpa was a score but he's really raw. This year looks like a strikeout except for Sanchez and Gift who were recruited awhile ago. Actually lately there ain't been much happening at all.

Sanchez
Obekpa
Garrett
Pointer
Achiuwa
Jones
Sampson
Harrison
Greene
Branch
Balamou
Bourgault
Hooper

How many names is that? What's the scholarship limit? Not much is happening because you don't run a guy out of school for just any player.

Last season you posted every damn day "I sure wish we'd get some recruits." And guess what? We got recruits. So maybe you should just wait for the process to play out.

Still these events aren't strikeouts. Not even close. You said he strikes out year to year with recruits. Bottom line is he has had 2 ROY players that HE signed.

Sorry, but Coach is hitting line drive doubles and singles.

You're looking for grand slams in the bottom of the first inning with your lead off hitter.

It may be time to change teams with this new league forming.

I'm quite sure you'd be very happy with Syracuse and all their success. Then again...

Look at his disingenuousness by not giving Lavin any credit for Branch. Like ZanMan stated, it may be time for you to change teams.

Zan - well noted

not to offend any cat lovers but there is more than one way to, well
you can drive in runs via "small ball" or over the fences.
you can earn a living with one primary/major job or a few grouped together
you can circle the globe in a single swooooop or, God forbid, with stops in every port (airport that is)

I like the way Coach Lavin is moving along
We've already had good times during his brief tenure
and it sure looks as though good times will be ahead

It just isn't in me to go heavy on the criticism - perhaps because I evolved in such judgmental/harsh arenas such as a religious school where if you peed you'd surely go to hell; God didn't like people I suppose;
then in the Army - which I love and have fond memories of and memories of all the decent solid people therein - one was (often not always) lead by fear/threats/career ending mistakes etc.

So I try to take a more balanced view or even optimistic - and perhaps realistic when it comes to Lavin and recruiting BECAUSE

Which SJU coach - Louie included - has recruited as nationally as Steve Lavin?
Which coach has had to recruit a large class and did so with quality?
Which coach year in and out has been involved with multiple top 50-100 recruits?
Which coach has been able to blend both local and out of state and European kids better than coach Lavin?

for me
it's the end of the discussion
all the best

LOL - this is actually funnier than usual

How many scholarships do you think we have available??? How many recruits should we have by now?

Jordan as the missing piece as we lack a back-up point guard.
