Why Redshirt God's Gift

Pat Sullivan was red-shirted after being a key reserve on a National Championship team. But there was no way he was going to play with Dean Smith bringing in Jerry Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace the next year.

Fair points by many about why God's Gift could contribute next year.
And, apparently, people have red-shirted after playing and then played meaningful minutes again the following year.

I honestly don't believe though that coach is saving Gift because he thinks next year could be special. As everyone on this board knows, D'angelo plans to go pro after this season. He's told people as much explicitly.
I don't think he's ready, and I think he'll end up in Europe, but that's besides the point. If we lose D'angelo, or Sampson for that matter, then that takes much of the shine off next season.

What I do buy, is the idea that coach knows Sanchez will only be eligible for one year, if at all. And maybe it's true that there isn't a big man out there worth recruiting. I don't know - but if that's the case, then it would make sense to let Sanchez play this season, and have Gift wait his turn for next season.

I just think it's easy to overrate Gift's possible contribution. Because if he does play, then it's at the expense of Obekpa, Sampson, or Garrett/Jones probably. Could he play 10minutes a night to spell Obekpa? Yes. And that's an appropriate role for him, any more is asking too much. But he is a valuable safety net should Obekpa get hurt. For that reason alone, I can now see some sense in red-shirting him for next year.

Good points by multiple posters. I was probably too down on Gift.

If at first you don't succeed, try try again. (referencing your 2 blank prior posts). good perseverance.
