Why All The Optimism

This years team is not very good and we only have one player signed for next year. Am I missing something

Lovett is a partial qualifier, so he'll be on board next year. He would have been the best player on our team this year, by far. Owens is sitting out as a transfer, and will provide much needed height. Hopefully, Yakwe will be good to go, too.

Plus, our freshman will get better. Say anything you want about the DJ/Paris group, but they improved every year, even with Norm's ineptitude. If they could do that, there's no reason to think this group of freshman could do at least as good, probably better.

Lovett,Ponds hopefully Yakwe becomes partial qualifier and we apparently we have silent verbals from 5 other guys

I'm as optimist as anyone, and I look forward to having Lovett on our team. But to anoint him ""the best player on this team, by far" before you've ever seen the kid play is a real reach.

The truth is that the future is a question mark and we appear to be years away from being competitive. There is no guarantee that all of these new kids (yawke, Lovett, ponds) will all play together, no less develop into a cohesive unit.

It appears that mullin, slice and company are making headway in the recruiting trail, but who knows how it will all play out. Unfortunately, the current program is at rock bottom. As I alluded to earlier, this team is presently far less talented than the squad normy inherited and that's saying something.

As a sju fan I think you can choose to be optimistic or be miserable. As one who usually chooses the latter, I will give optimism a try.

Fair, but do you think hes not?

No, I'm not saying he's not. What I'm saying is that the kid has yet to play a game of college ball so it's premature to put that kind of label on the kid.

Why the optimism?

I believed Felipe and Zendon made us a lock for a national championship...

I thought Fran Faschilla would bring the New York swagger back to the program...

I expected Mike Jarvis would be the strong role model who would attract high-quality athletes and students to St. John's...

...that Norm Roberts had the decency and passion for St. John's to recreate the "local school makes good..." vibe...

...and that Steve Lavin had the star power to make NYC the dream location for college hoops prodigies.

So why the optimism? Every New York kid will want to learn from Chris Mullin and his rock star staff and own NYC, right?

I can't possibly be wrong for a sixth consecutive time, can I?

So, you are shilling for whom? Which old coach? I think this thread can be over a lot faster if we know, so we can get that out of the way.

Agree, so I'll just say Lovett wouldn't not be our best player ;)

I was at the Red/White game. The guys couldn't keep up with him. The only one that seemed comfortable playing at his pace was Yakwe, ironically. He looked like our fastest player, our best shooter, our best on-ball defender, our best passer, by far. I feel pretty comfortable saying what I said.

See, this is the whole problem with the site, in a nutshell. Here I was, trying to figure out whether Boo Harvey or TiS is the bigger troll, and out of nowhere BOOM comes somebody named "isham" (is ham? Ish am? I sham?) to storm into contention.

Makes the Vandy beatdown seem like small potatoes.

I actually don't think we are years away from being competitive. Next year, with LoVett, Yakwe, Owens, and Ponds coming in to mesh with Mussini, Ellison, Sima, and Williams will be a good squad. On top of that, Freudenberg and Bashir Ahmed really make that a competitive roster.

"Am I missing something?"
To be succinct (w/o alluding to the specifics so many (optimistic) posters have already detailed)
The "missing something"
It's called the ' Big Picture'...

We knew this was going to be a rough year. We had no returning starters, no team and a new coaching staff. In a relatively short time they put together a roster for this year. Given what they they had to work with I think they have done a remarkable job in a very short time and we have some bright spots on the roster right now, just not enough, Today we played an outstanding team, one that could go deep in March. We know that we will face this on a frequent basis, until our new staff has a chance to recruit their own players. We have to give them the time they need to get this done. Our team is going to get their brains scrambled this year, Period. We can't do a thing about that. What we can do is realize it for what it is, we can be supportive of the kids we have, the coaching staff who have worked their rear ends off. We will always have the naysayers, We all want to win. We want to win now, but that will not be. Let's get excited about the future. Coach Mullin and his staff gives us the right to be optimistic about our future. I believe the future is bright. I know many of you will disagree with me, but I think it is a lot smarter to be optimistic about our future than to complain about all that is wrong. Let's enjoy the bright spots if and when they occur. It's going to be a long season......

I was there also every step of the way, diehard SJU and Mets fan, so it is optimism, solace in small victories, or suicide. I've been lucky so far, the cyanide pill is still in my wallet.

We have a staff that has both a LOVE for NYC and SJU in particular when referring to the HC. We have what is the first genuine rebuild going on. Norm...he inherited some experience in Hamilton, Hill and Gray. Lavin inherited all of Norm's seniors. There is more work to do...but nobody I would trust more to give their all to that rebuilding than the staff we have. That's my optimism. This is a true rebuilding and I am patient because I believe that patience will pay dividends.
