Who Should be the new St . John's President?

Harrington's departure from St.John's was not a surprise. Given his age and facts relating to "Harrington-Gate" it was merely a matter of time before he quit or was forced out.

For that reason I do not believe that the timing of Fr. Mahar's appointment as President of Niagara was a a coincidence. My guess is that Fr. Mahar either did not want the St.John's job or he was thought by the Vicentians to be too inexperienced to deal with the mess that Harrington left.

He is a good family friend and a great man, but I don't think he would have been a wise choice at this point in his career.

The only Vincentian with real hands-on experience is at DePaul.
A lay person with excellent creditials is also a possibility as salary seems not an issue considering the fact that squirts like Wile were pulling in half a million!

Those are my sentiments, but will the Vincentians move the DePaul president to St. John's? who will fill DePaul and would that be favoritism towards us?

Favoritism? Think of those university's as corporate assets, each generating revenue in the business of education. St. John's is the largest of those entities, and if the most competent person to lead St. John's is at one of the sister schools, then it is simply a business decision to move that person to SJU.

Anybody hearing any news on this front? Immensely important transition for SJU. Both students, alums and faculty seemingly wanting the next President to Champion academics. Wondering if there is any info out there as to the direction SJU will go with this?

Any well-liked former politicians lurking around New York? I'd go that route if I were St. John's. They need to make a big splash to ramp up fundraising.

I think it would need to be a well-liked pro-life politician. Not making this political, but a Catholic University would look in that direction.

Whomever the next president is, it is essential they put their focus first and foremost on academics. Most workplaces don't look at St. John's as anything special nowadays.

Father Harrington let our academic reputation slip over the last decade. We need a home run candidate (whether a priest or not) who will put his or her focus on improving the standards of the school.

Mario fits one of the two criteria. But I doubt he'd want the job.

Guiliani?! I can see him showing up at SJ games just like he was at many Yankee games as mayor. Lol

I don't like the guy, but he's honestly probably what St. John's needs.

I honestly said Guiliani as a joke at first but the more I thought about it the more I love the idea. He is a very dedicated man, set record lows for crime in the city, was a strong leader during and after 9/11, attended the funerals of every NYPD member lost and shook everyone's hand. He's a straight-talker, loves sports, and excels even in times of pressure. When you think Guiliani you think NYC. He would definitely bring our status higher and make tons of headlines. Great leader.
