Harrington's departure from St.John's was not a surprise. Given his age and facts relating to "Harrington-Gate" it was merely a matter of time before he quit or was forced out.
For that reason I do not believe that the timing of Fr. Mahar's appointment as President of Niagara was a a coincidence. My guess is that Fr. Mahar either did not want the St.John's job or he was thought by the Vicentians to be too inexperienced to deal with the mess that Harrington left.
