Where were you?

I was there last night. Was disappointed by the lack of a St. John's fans especially when when compared with the throng from Zona.

Realize it was a 9:30 start on a Thursday night in November, but thought there would be a lot more Redmen fans. Congrats to those who showed their support.

If we want to continue to attract top talent, we have to show them that we will be there supporting them.

Don't want to get to crazy about the fans disguised as empty seats, it's early in the season.

That said, this team is great fun to watch and very easy to cheer for, IMO.

While there was a good number of students there and they deserve an A plus for their efforts, it appears that the overwhelming majority of the student body could care less.

I guess the same could be said for many of our apathetic alumni who never show up. So much for school spirit!

Makes one wonder if the right marketing minds are in place to engage both the students and the alumni.

I would have to say they arent.

Moose, when has St.John's ever had a marketing department that did anything? Same all, same all.

Even when I was in school, the basketball marketing department has always been HORRENDOUS. Something needs to be done, either get a new group or outsource it to a professional company.

BTW
The basketball teams have their own separate marketing department last i heard which is even more pathetic.

I agree Upstate, the Syracuse game will be 75% orange in my opinion. If tickets for that game are available already (I have season tickets so I don't know how & when individual games go on sale) you can bet that most SU alums living in NYC have taken them or will buy them up before long.

On a lighter note, I posted some pictures from last night's game in the photos section of my profile. Hope you enjoy them.

The tickets are not on sale yet. I tried to buy some with some Cuse ppl. I actually have a huge group I am going with, mostly Cuse guys, but I am buying like 10 tickets myself (15 bucks with a student ID), and going to then give/sell them to friends of mine that are neutral but would root for the Johnies. I can't bear to sit there with all people in Orange yelling, I hate them more than any other fanbase. I really really think if we get Garett back, by then we can challenge them. Cuse is a weird team. They are deep and long, but they can be inconsistent from 3 but they fall in love with it. They have games where they just keep shooting even if they are off. If we catch them on a night like that who knows. I really think we have an NCAA caliber team, and I expect these kids to win every time out. I know its high, but they did not seem rattled at all on the big stage against a deep, experienced team.

Be interesting to see when they go on sale. I think we should start an informal campaign right now where all of us Redmen.comers all buy an additional ticket or two for that game in hopes that we will find some true St. John's fans between now and the SU game who will need a ticket. OK, so maybe that's a stretch but my stomach turns thinking of those arrogant jerks in orange filling up the Garden.

Can Mike Reople buy out the Garden? But seriously, I agree, in some way, even if we all buy a couple of tickets, and just give them to casual fans, or neutrals. Lets be honest, no local sports fan will root for Cuse over the Johnies if they have no invested interest in Cuse. If you have a student ID you get 2 tickets, best available at the time of purchase for 15 bucks. I have been using my college id from another school for years, and now that I am a grad student, I have a new one. If you go buy and then go back 5 minutes later you can continue to do that. I am going to do that, I have like 4 Nova fan friends coming to that game rooting for the Johnies. For some reason, my friends who went to other schools other than Cuse, always root for the Johnies when they don't play their school.

I guess we can dress it up any way we would like (and, in fairness, many of your points are well taken and deserve consideration), but I think the main reason for the lack of fans is apathy.

Let's put hoops aside, and remember that only 15% of the alumni base contributes to the university every year.

It's more a function of an overall general lack of school spirit than anything else, IMO.

This a critical juncture for the program, and we cannot expect Coach Lavin to continue to corral top recruiting classes if the fan support isn't there.

Yes, it's early and things can change on a dime. Let's hope that it will.

Just to put things into perspective, SJU attendance, while mid pack in the big east, is ahead of every PAC-10 school except Arizona. That's coming off a bad decade or two. There were plenty of empty seats up at the Uconn vs Maine game yesterday as well from what I saw on tv. Tons actually, and they are coming of a NCAA championship. For most schools, early season doesnt draw quite as well as regular season. Attendance jumped last season and will continue to. More than enough attendance to make recruits happy.

PAC-12 B)

Not sure whether Repole can but if I had the means, I'd buy as many tickets as I could and personally give them to STJ students & fans for free, that's how much I love St. John's and how much I would love to one day see us take back the Garden. Things will get better and I am sure we will have a better turnout for the Fordham game since it is a 2:30 start but that is one nasty taste lingering after last night's game.

No, stats I was comparing to we're pac-10.

I was there section 112 lol some drunking guy with a bandana on his head was talking bs to Arizona fans, everyone was laughing.
Sitting there listening to their U of A chants was pissing me off, saying to myself I wish our kids would beat their asses and make their fans shut the hell up and up 8 with under 8 to go I really thought they were gonna do it but then Lindsey fouls out and we all know what happened from their on out.

I`d love to go to the Syracuse but I don`t want to sit there and hearing all their fans with their damn chants making it sound like it`s in Syracuse. I wouldn`t mind it if our fan base would counter them fools and sound as loud. You`re right Mj, it is sickening
