Where are they now: James Scott

I too didn't realize he had a cup of coffee in the league. Scott was an immense talent/athlete who, for whatever reason, never lived up to the advanced billing. There were always those occasional flashes on brilliance, but not often enough. He had a Jordan/Kobe kind of game. Of course nowhere near that level. FWIW the other Scott on that team, Shawnelle, is the head varsity coach at The Beacon School over by Lincoln Center. Coached my son's college buddy, who spoke very highly of him. FWIW2 Meryl Streep's bro is one of the other coaches of that team.

James Scott was one of the most hyped recruits we ever had.

After averaging a triple double, he became the first freshman to earn First Team JUCO All American honors since Larry Johnson. He was written about in almost every major preseason publication as the top transfer in D1.

Hmmm a list I don't think we've ever had in the beating subjects to death forum. ( or maybe we have and my mind is so burnt I forgot )

All All Time Incoming Hype team ( not a reflection on their performance here whether it be good or bad. Just the anticipation of their arrival )

1. Felipe
2. Scott

Personally while Malik was definitely a huge get for us Chucky Sproling I remember everyone talking about especially since he was prop48 that first year.

Artest was big. Eric Barkely also. I'd have to think about others. Harkless was huge because it was Lavin's 1st recruit

And James Scott also did some acting: He was in "Lean on Me" for about five seconds portraying . . . a basketball player.

Mel Davis has to be on that list. Every major program was after him big time. Mullin, too. SJU doesn't beat out Duke for a recruit very often.

Yeah, but Duke wasn't DUKE back then
Coach K was just starting to get it rolling when he recruited Mullin
I believe he tried to get Wennington as well

Chucky had an air of mystery about him because (in the pre-Internet days), nobody on this coast had seen a second of video on him. All we knew was the he was highly rated, had great size for a 2G, had a rep as a deadeye shooter and once put up 70+ pts in a high school game. So the hype was pretty huge.

As for most hyped recruits.....

I think Wayne McCoy was probably the most highly rated recruit we ever landed after Felipe.

Sproling actually played in the 'Dapper Dan Classic,' which was televised on ESPN. It was similar to the (a slight notch below) McDonald's All-American Game.

Played 15 years professionally and traveled the world. Pretty cool. Is his son worth recruiting?

As for most hyped recruits.....

I think Wayne McKoy was probably the most highly rated recruit we ever landed after Felipe.

Agree, MainMan. The hype was McKoy was going be college basketball's next dominant big man (an "aircraft carrier" as Al McGuire called him). He was good but never came close to living up to the hype.

Another recruit who got a ton of attention -- and rightly deserved it -- was Walter Berry.

Marcus Broadnax is close to the list. A 40ppg scorer from Florida who convinced Looie we didn't need Gary Payton.

McKoy - true - was touted highly since 6th grade, and his exploits recorded regularly in the old LI PRess. Looie even added WIllis Reed as a center's coach, which could have added a recruiting edge.
Reggie Carter - unhappy in Hawaii, the type of player who yearned to return home, and was touted highly and performed well.
Zendon - not in the same stratosphere as Felipe, but the combination put them on the cover of SI
Mullin - we knew we landed a plum, and it worked out that way
Berry - Expectations were sky high from everyone, including Mullin, when Berry chose SJU.

K wanted Sealy as well.

I believe Sealy was going to Providence & Pitino until Pitino got the NBA gig and fell into our laps.

Agreed he was pretty highly hyped, but as JCs go I don't remember him being more hyped then Berry or Harvey. He was certainly not more hyped our most heralded recruits. IMO McKoy and Felipe stand apart as most hyped. 2 guys who were supposed to elevate us.

I remember Sealy's HS coach was quoted as saying that "Malik was Rick's kid." Happily for us, the lure of the NBA was too much to say no to.
