First, didn't know you are now a Floridian. Enjoy your retirement!Have any of Pitino hiring advocates watched him coach this season?
I have. The soon to be 71 year old Pitino does not look quite as slick as they remember him in bygone years, and ….. no, Pitino’s second place Iona team is not burning up the MAAC as many predicted, and Iona failed to qualify for the NCAA tournament last year. He will have a difficult time reaching the NCAA again this season.
The Pitino groupies have likely not seen Pitino sit seemingly clueless on the Iona bench as his Iona team got drilled by Siena last week, and previously in early January by Quinnipiac.
I've seen Rick coach a few games this year. I was at the Hofstra game where his team lost on November 11th.
I also watched his team beat Quinnipiac.
He still has the same reserved posture during games and is never dramatic. His strength is in game preparation. He will never be able to recruit top talent at Iona and he seems resigned to coach who he can entice to lively New Rochelle.
Yes, he shows his age with his demeanor on the sidelines. I agree that he would not be a long term solution but he would be with the gamble in the 3-4 year range because he would get the players in a conference like the Big East.
There are younger candidates in the Pitino price range that may be better long term candidates but none that would ignite a flame of publicity and booster interest in a city like New York.
Sadly, college coaches are way over valued for coaching kids in a 30 game season compared to professional coaches. The key still is to get a coach that can get the right balance of talent on a team. This staff has failed at that skill.
