Wheeler

I assumed he had a minor injury as he never took his sweats off and the pants he was wearing are not usually worn by guys who are active that day. But I've heard nothing of the sort since the game ended.

Wheeler did nothing in 3 years at purdue and has stunk here.  This is who he is unfortunately.  We thought maybe the "mike Anderson system" would do him wonders but it hasnt.  He is just not good and it looks like Coach has now figured that out too.

Wheeler is athletic. He needs to play inside out not outside in. Until he realizes that it's gonna be ughhhh

^ This right here.

It was worth the try, and on paper he seems like an ideal fit.  Like I said, I argued with Purdue fans that he would thrive in a system like that just based on his attributes.  I remember Jon Rothstein went to watch a practice this summer and he was raving about Wheeler, CMA was raving about him all off-season as well.

I think the issue may be when he gets in the game he's so focused on being a "stretch 4" and trying to find his offense and show people he can shoot, he's not focusing on the defensive end.  All he has to do is just go out there play hard, rebound, and rotate properly on defense, that's literally all Nyiwe is doing, and that got him a starting spot.

Anyone know his status? Is he hurt or just buried on the bench. It is not a good sign that he played 1 minute in the last 2 games.

I think it’s a great sign he is glued to the bench , it shows that CMA is in charge and that the inmates are not running the asylum. Wheeler has a great deal of talent but it has to be used where the team requires it and not where Wheeler deems it appropriate. If he decides to listen to CMA he could be a great asset defensively with his length, quickness and height. If he continues to float on the perimeter when given the opportunity to play I don’t see him contributing. At this point in time he has been a colossal bust, even more so when we read all the rave reviews written about him in practice a few months ago. He has been a horrible tease. Hopefully he gets his act together real soon and our rotation is firmed up.

Is he another Steele?

Christian Jones who like Wheeler we heard great things about how he looked and wht he did in practice but never translated in games.  I know there is at least one other forward we heard the same (not Steere) but I can’t think of who it was.

His opportunity to contribute and get PT is to start scoring from foul line on in (ala Brownlee). It’s a need we have and the opportunity to fill it is wide open.
