What Went Right, What Went Wrong: A Season In Review

Season's over. What happened? It went so fast. Too fast. Disappointing ending, but I will be back for more next year. Some things went right. We made the dance. A lot went wrong. Thoughts out there?

As I said in game thread the fact that in year 4 we still had no bench and no size is unacceptable. Now next year we get size but we lose Ponds and possibly Heron and maybe even Simon. You have to have size and depth to win.

Right.

Coming off of screens set by Steere will be significantly better for him...

Crap year? My god people

The constant size deficiency was a big problem. Either Coach didn't see it, which I find hard to believe, or he applied principles learned through a long NBA career that just don't work on the college level, which i do believe. If things worked out as Coach planned, this team would have been the college version of his undersized but effective Warriors teams. Except they had several Hall of Famers and dead-eye shooters, and a pg with an unstoppable crossover, and an innovative coach in Don Nelson. We may get 1 player drafted.

Several things went wrong, exacerbating our lack of size and bench.
1. Heron and Ponds never quite meshed. Not sure why, but Heron never got in a consistent groove.
2. Three point shooting was just average for a team that relies so much on the 3.
3. An undisciplined approach resulted in too many uncorrected bad habits that were exploited by the conference teams and their experienced coaching staffs.

Yeah, he didn't have a great year (and he was awful tonight), but he did have his moments this year. Never looked the same after the knee injury recurred.

Clark had an awful year, I don't think we can deny that.

The team looked like an inexperienced team too often, making dumb mistakes, as evidenced tonight.

What we saw tonight was a team that was physically and emotionally exhausted. The fact is there are few college sports teams representing big cities. There is a reason for that. IN the modern era, it's too much. Too stressful. UCLA isn't doing so much better than SJU. I will always root for the team, but let's stop treating unpaid college players like we treat Odell Beckham. SJU players have provided hundreds of hours of entertainment for free, and in the largest basketball market in the country.

Thanks for being the first in line for Moose's prophecies.

Thanks for pointing that out from your permanent position on the SJU psychiatrist couch.

I think you need to see one based on your initial post in this thread.

The team thrived in prosperity and floundered as soon as they felt the slightest bit of tension. You can’t win chucking up 3’s and not rebounding.

LJ looks like he will be solid contributor if he stays. Williams looks like he can have a nice future.

The one thing that they said over and over that is troubling as we have not won an NCAA tourney game in 20 years. For a school that prides itself as a basketball school that is horrendous. Think of all the schools that have won games over that time. Louisville, who was in the Big East for, what 5-7 years has won more BE championships than we won tourney games. Hoping something changes for the good soon.

And folks wonder why the negativity.

Not touching it with a ten foot pole Dink

LJ about the only thing I can point to as a positive. He's a solid player, needs to refine his game but love the hustle and the energy.

Greg Williams and Josh Roberts should have played more. They showed small signs but not nearly enough minutes to get a good feel.

Despite making the NCAA this was an extremely frustrating and disappointing year and one to to forget. Hopefully the staff can use this year as a positive in recruiting and keeping some momentum.

You don't mean the same exact staff right?

We are all well paid posters here. We will all look deep into what went wrong. Why it went wrong. Where it went wrong.

Hell if I know. In a way, I am glad this season is over. Of course I wanted them to win, but what started one of the most promising, season, turned out to one of the most frustrating.

Whatever it was that did not click, I expect changes. The team will certainly look differently, as will the staff. Maybe a change in chemistry with the players and coaches is required.

The positive to come out of this is the University has an AD in place who is serious, and has an understanding of how to fix what is wrong. He did not take the job, and the school certainly did not offer him the job (with a good salary) to lollygag around and paint pretty pictures of a black hole.

The short term hurts. But I think the program's long term view is healthy. Teams and programs in worse shape than this one (and I know it is hard to believe sometimes) have turned things around and succeeded.

For now, my sports enjoyment will consist of watching the Islanders continue to overachieve (had to get my Islanders reference in at some point, as a team in shambles, finally turning it around).

But of course in the end, whatever happens, just remember this is sports. No need to kill one another or bang your head into a wall over it. Afterall, we all brothers and sisters in SJU.

We are...(even though we are not happy about it right now).

Sorry but I don't want to give this staff another crack at it. I see the players they bring in. Nice kids, positive stories sure. But if you want to play the laissez faire system Mullin feels comfortable 'coaching' then you need a different type of player. And we aren't getting that player. So something has to give.
