with all these players wanting to transfer to other schools. I just read that Michigan just lost 2 players who are tranferring. This appears to be a phenomenon in college basketball today. Never witnessed anything like this in the 45 years I have been following SJU basketball. What do you make of it????

Wow talk about a loaded question

You could go several ways with this

1. This revolves around the fact that many of these kids are a part of a culture that emphasizes self...getting your's...and getting it with minimal investment in the process of "getting your's". Add to that a lot of delusion. My momma and some AAU coach told me I am like a mix of Allen Iverson and Shaq and I should be getting paid for my skill.
Somebody else has to be at fault for your inability to be in the NBA after your freshman year...

2. a number of kids realize after they get to college that there skills aren't as refined as they thought, that they aren't getting the playing time that they want, that the college they are attending doesn't offer the program they have discovered they want to be a part of... etc etc
after not really digging into what really is the best place for them when they were high school seniors, they have now discovered that another institution is the best place for them to get playing time (maybe they just love playing and know they aren't going to the NBA) or pursue the knowledge they need for their future career

I wouldn't be surprised to see this as a norm.

Is it really a new phenomenon? Are the numbers that much greater than year's past? Or is there just more coverage of it?

Remember, one of STJ's greatest teams featured an all-transfer backcourt (Rencher/Carter) and that was 30+ years ago.

The circumstances were a little different then. Reggie and Bernard wanted to come home. I guess the palm trees of Hawaii and the big football atmosphere of South Bend lost their charm.

Now kids transfer for many other reasons, homesickness is probably pretty low on the list.

I think kids have always transferred in hopes of more PT.

I think it would be a good idea leave an open scholi for a transfer or a player who decommits due to a coaching change. You never know who could be available.

Sick Grandmother seems to be a popular excuse these days ;)

Unfortunately I think all these transfers are a outward sign that society is changing. I don't mean to become to philisophical here, but think about it. Many kids don't have the core values that some of us older posters grew up with. Loyalty, commitment, seem like words that have evaporated. The loss of values like these make it easy to move on whenever the thought makes it seem like a move will enhance what the kid is trying to do for himself. The fact that he gave his word means next to nothing to him if it is expedient.

Does Syracuse chancellor Nancy Cantor have those core values? Or whomever the Pitt president is?

BTW, how many of these transfers are solely the player's decision? And how many are being pushed out by their respective coaches?

Anyone interested in investing in a "Rent a Granny" company?

Besides transfers quick exits to the NBA are becoming routine. Its not like the olden days of Mullin and Ewing were the great players played 3 or 4 years. The makeup of a team could change dramatically from one year to the next. IE Kentucky.

Frank, I think you are on to something. My thoughts exactly!! From one oldtimer to another!!

I'll agree that values have changed, but I wouldn't hang it all on the kids.

As Mainman noted, some are forced out. Others sign with teams and then watch their "older generation" coaches bolt for the next highest dollar. Where is their loyalty and commitment?

If the core values of the kids have changed, it is, in part, a reflection of the what they've learned from watching their parents and grandparents.

(And, FWIW, I'm almost old enough to say "get off my lawn").

Our culture is increasingly about immediate gratification, whether it's going to the NBA even if you're not prepared to make that jump, or transferring schools because you're not getting enough PT as a frosh and you might actually have to wait until junior year to start, or having to wait a few seconds longer for a computer download. AT&T (I think) runs these absurd commericals aimed at under-30s and way-under-30s about getting text messages four or five seconds sooner than other carriers. Imagine that: you can get innocuous news on your iPhone about your coworker's retirement (or engagement or whatever) a full five seconds sooner than everyone else. Sign me up!

I don't see anything different than past years. Anyone have transfer stats? I would say kids moving hs is much common in recent years which is a bigger change.

If you note, my post said many kids........because I realize that it did not apply to every kid. Of course there are many reasons that kids transfer. If it is a genuine reason...the conversation need go not further.
