Jack , I’m glad you are a Ponds fan . I think he was a great player for us during the Mullin years .He was so awesome. He was the star of the team when I was a student there. My favorite in person performances from him had to be the Marquette game at CA (he murdered them, think he had like 40 that game).
Then the VCU game at Barclays. Talk about putting the team on your back.
What was always so impressive about Shamorie was he really didn't have the quickness and athleticism needed to be a superstar guard. But he was still a superstar anyway off of pure skill and finesse. That kid could get himself a look whenever he wanted.
Maybe I am underrating his athleticism because I am now remembering that steal he had in OT @Georgetown when he just levitated to grab a pass out of thin air
Yea I don't necessarily mean he was slow, he was surely not slow. But for his size, usually to be a dominant guard at that size, you often see college guys like Max Abmas who are small but fly around the court. Shamorie played at his own pace. He didn't blow you away with his speed, but a couple moves and he would have you confused about which way he was going, and then he'd attack relentlessly. I wish he wasn't stuck getting coached by Greg St Jean who walked around campus often and looked no different from the rest of us students LOLI don’t share you belief that he was slow and not Athletic . He seemed pretty quick to me.. But , we all have our opinions . That steal against G’Town was other worldly .
I think the biggest hurdle for Shamorie going into the Pros was his size . He was barely 6’0” tall and had a relatively small frame . Plus , as a undrafted player it’s very hard to carve out a place on a NBA squad . Champaign has done it but , it’s the exception rather than the rule .
Well we lost the Michigan game, stomped more like it, so the only way to the sting out from that game is to win the tourny in Charlotte.Just curious what scenario people think is the better scenario.
So we lost to Michigan. Game is done and its time to move on.
We NEED to win in Charleston at least 2 games now and this first one becomes a must win to avoid the loser's bracket route.
But
Would you feel better to lose the Michigan game and go 3-0 in Charleston?
Or would you rather a win vs Michigan and go 2-1 in Charleston?
This is just a what if scenario. We can go 3-0 or 0-3 which would be dare I say I dont know if this site could handle that. Was just curious about the above what if.
I love Max Abmas. He and the North Texas transfer, Tylor Perry, were my two favorite players in the portal.Yea I don't necessarily mean he was slow, he was surely not slow. Plenty of teams has went on to have solid-to-great seasons after getting smoked either early in the season or mid-season. I'd be here for another 10 years spitting out those teams if I had to name 'em.I think I would have rather had the win against Michigan. That game just meant so much to program in my opinion. Big game against a Big 10 tournament quality team, Pitino’s first game at the Garden, a 14,000+ crowd, that game could have really launched this Pitino era program with a win. To lose the way we did was really disheartening.
GREAT player. Wish he had better guidance from coach. Divincenzo, now a pro, couldn’t cover Ponds in college. Ponds routinely ate him up as he did to most.He was so awesome. But DiVincenzo, Brunson & Hart put in the hard work needed to make it in the NBA. Talent alone doesn't do it.GREAT player. Wish he had better guidance from coach. Divincenzo, now a pro, couldn’t cover Ponds in college. Ponds routinely ate him up as he did to most.
Truer words never spoken!! 1000+But DiVincenzo, Brunson & Hart put in the hard work needed to make it in the NBA. Talent alone doesn't do it.
Maybe it's a cliche', but that's why they are so popular, they hit home !Plenty of teams has went on to have solid-to-great seasons after getting smoked either early in the season or mid-season. I'd be here for another 10 years spitting out those teams if I had to name 'em.
Hell! I can name two in particular regarding St. John's. The '92-'93 and '97-'98 teams, respectively. Neither team did much of anything early in the season before getting their act together early in conference play and parlaying those seasons into NCAA Tournament bids.
Monday night was bad, no doubt. But I've watched sports far, far too long to know a season can either gradually turn around or turn around on a dime. It's not a sprint; it's a marathon. Too early IMO to be disheartened. Concerned? Human nature if you ask me, and understandable after Monday's game. Disheartened? Nah. Talk to me after Charleston or midway through Big East play.
That’s why I wished he had better guidance (ie someone to make demands nand hold him accountable)But DiVincenzo, Brunson & Hart put in the hard work needed to make it in the NBA. Talent alone doesn't do it.
I remember feeling bad watching Pearl Washington destroying Mark Jackson senior year. Pearl could beat Mark at will. Looked how their NBA careers went.GREAT player. Wish he had better guidance from coach. Divincenzo, now a pro, couldn’t cover Ponds in college. Ponds routinely ate him up as he did to most.
