What Feels Different So Far

I guess I should clarify my earlier comment. I'm not really questioning if buzz is a thing. My comment is more so that we came into this off season at such a low point, with literally no buzz, and seemingly generated buzz out of nowhere. So if it's possible to generate buzz out of nowhere, then why is it so important to capitalize on it when we have it?

To say out of no where is a bit off base. The buzz generated by the Curbelo and David Jones rumors and then it actually happened. Then you started hearing all the Gardner hype and that came to fruition. Then you got 4 visits on campus from 4 star recruits, plus unofficials from 5 star kids. The buzz isn't out of no where, it's through a collective staff effort and things "finally" breaking our way with recruits and such.

Buzz has to start somewhere 112. As mentioned previously, the hiring of Chris Mullin created an instant buzz. Lavin created a buzz quickly with his strong recruiting right out of the gate. It's never completely out of nowhere. There's always a catalyst.

Buzz stared when we got Curbelo and Jones. If we don’t win, however, it will be short lived. Hoping we get a tourney bid.

I also feel there is a good vibe w this team and recruits feel it when visiting. Always nice when current players are talking us up and recruiting there friends.

Avid reader, seldom poster, 70 plus years a fan. Love the enthusiasm shown for our current list of prospects.
Pushing for two guards and the CTK forward Williams. Would take all three, but only two slots available.

My first choice would be Charles C because he covers two positions, guard and small forward. If Williams does not commit we are covered. If Demaury falls thru, we still have a guard.
Let’s just hope we can close on two of them.

To me the biggest difference is that Lavin and Mullin's big recruits came in when the cupboard was bare and they were guaranteed playing time from the jump. Storr, Curbelo, Jones and Gardner have all committed where playing time has to be earned over players that have in the system for some time.

Suspect this season Cubelo and Jones have “earned it“ already or would not have come, right or wrong. “Promises, promises” for those two, but of course if they struggle, it will have to be dealt with.

IMO the biggest difference is that Lavin and Mullin's biggest recruits came during their first couple of seasons. Anderson's recruiting is getting better in year four. By year four of Lavin and Mullin we all could see what was about to happen.

Difference Lavin and Mullins got recruits on their good name. Anderson is working hard and getting recruit’s on effort.
Let me also add that we seem to have an entire staff out there recruiting, as opposed to the one or two guys on the 2 previous staffs. On shear numbers alone, our staff has many more contacts and is able to cast a much wider net.

Adding to what Paultz said, impossible to say how full or empty the cupboard will be by the time Gardner arrives. In this day and age, with roster turnover being what it is, I don't think a kid like Gardner is worried so much about PT a year down the road.

Just my two cents, but there are plenty of programs signing multiple 4 star kids that most posters here don't even know about. Uconn, Nova and many other programs throughout the country do it regularly. Is there a buzz around those programs cause of their recruits? The only buzz generated by recruiting a great St. John's class (unless you're Duke and can bring in a 5 man class of 5 star kids) is the buzz for die hard Johnny fans who follow this program religiously. The average college hoops fan doesn't care about the "buzz" from recruiting, its the "buzz" from wins on the court that get the attention and create a true "buzz"in a college hoops program.

I liken it to (since I'm into guitars) a guy who builds custom boutique guitars. He can put in the best pick ups, the finest woods, gold plated tuners etc. While it may look awesome, if it sounds like crap, no legit guitarist will buy it.

Agreed. But honestly that should be expected. Curbelo was a top freshman in the Big 10 and on preseason first team Big 10 lists last season. And Jones has already showed he is at minimum a good BE player, if not a step above that. So when those guys come via the portal, there is definitely expectations they will get some burn. And that is 100% normal.

It’s true , I don’t think we are recruiting better then the average BE team. But, we are recruiting the best in the Anderson era. Also did well w the transfers and didn’t loose any players.
But the most important buzz comes from winning.

I hear what you're saying JR, and agree that the only real buzz will come with success on the court, but make no mistake, recruits, parents, coaches, etc all took notice when we got a commitment from Curbelo, and then quickly followed it up with a commit from Jones and now Gardner. Plus we're involved with more high ranked kids then we have been in quite some time. There is definitely a buzz about our recruiting for the 1st time in the CMA era. Time will tell if it translate to Ws, but I gotta tell ya, I'm way happier with where we are right now then I have been in a while.

When I was a student at St John's, there was an expectation that we would make the NCAA every year. A season culminating in an NIT bid was considered a "meh" year. We haven't been at that level for a long time but, finally, it appears that we may be on track to reach those lofty standards once again.

Making the NCAA this year and closing out a great '23 recruiting class would go a long way toward reaching that goal and setting a baseline for the foreseeable future. We now have two outstanding recruiters in Macon and Shoes and are making inroads with top notch recruits, many of which are locals, which I love to see.

I can finally begin to see the trees through the forest. The future of St John's basketball looks like it may very well be turning the corner. I'm really looking forward to the 2022-23 season.

GO JOHNNIES!!!

Many are locals but many are from parts of the country we have never had success with. Store and King from Florida, a kid from Kansas, Madison Gardner from SC and looking at a few other out of state kids for the 2023 class. This staff is using the perfect approach as we can no longer rely 100% on NYC kids imho, as much as we may like the roster to be complete with them.

The biggest difference for me is that it seems we are “involved“ with more high school kids. I know we have recruited the Posh Alexander’s and Julian Champagnie’s mixed in. However, it seems we leaned very heavily on JUCO’s and transfers. Now, I am not against recruiting good players whatever the route. However, I do think the “potential” of good high school players like Gardner, like Storr, like Pinzon, potentially Williams breathes life into the program. Less of a mercenary feel. Yet, you still get guys like Jones and Curbelo who are open to coming closer to home.

I would compare it to how fans in baseball love the homegrown Jeter’s, Alonso’s Judge’s and Wright’s vs how it takes time to “accept” the Arods, Lindor’s, Giambi’s etc.
