What did that punk say to the SJU bench ?

I don't know if this is the place to say it, but when it comes to this type of behavior, it seems to me there is entirely too much mouthing off, gestures (like Harrison pointing to his head after making that 3) and cheap shots. Of course I realize that is the "face of the game" these days with bodies covered with"tats" and talking back to referees, coaches, interviewers. Yeah, I get it. I'm an old coot who should get with the program. If I were coaching, I guess I wouldn't be very successful at recruiting except maybe for West Point.

Joeche- you are one of the all time Redmen.com good guys, and I agree with you somewhat on civility. Tattoos are a style and have no place in the discussion of behavior, so let's discard that. I don't mind Harrison's gesticulations one bit - he is a fired up kid on the court, and his growth in self control has been exponential. If he is in a conference room at some white color job 10 years from now and is thumping his chest, that's a different story. For now, I love to see him fired up and exhorting himself and the fans. Talking sh*t to the other teams bench during play is a good way to cause a bench clearing brawl, and is an entirely different matter.

Good job differentiating behavior and style. Appearance shouldn't matter, and that's important to point out.
And I understand the point you are making about a player inciting our bench v. Harrison being demonstrative. They are different situations.
But aren't we putting too much weight into words? At the end of the day, he said something. He didn't push or hit anyone, and that's where the red line should be. No?

Desco - thanks for your reply, but we disagree when it comes to words. There are an unlimited number of things he could have said sandwiched around some profanity that would be worthy of Keady going off. Think about it. A long time ago, we had fans behind the BC bench taunting their coach because the guy's wife died. He should have ripped their tongues out. A generation ago, fans taunted Georgetown players by eating bananas in the stands, inferring that Ewing and the Hoyas were monkeys, and holding signs that said "Patrick Ewing can't read this." Thompson threatened to send his players into the stands if it didn't stop. He would have been justified to do so.

Civility matters.

The pen (words) is mightier than the sword (push or hit).

I think JT refused to have his players take the Court until the sign was taken down. Racism has no part in the game.

I re-read this thread and saw no reference to a racist sign. What are you referring to?

During the Ewing years something like that happened.

Thanks, Moose. I do remember that. I thought Brook was referring to something that happened Sunday night.

Well maybe Keady was drawing things on his notepad that Bowen didn't like :woohoo:

Some idiot put up a sign, "Ewing can't read this" or something to that effect.

I forget where it happened first, but it began to catch on, with fans in different arenas holding up signs like that. Billy Packer made some public statement that the Georgetown players were the worst spoken athletes he had ever seen, and it all fueled a load of garbage that Georgetown players didn't belong at Georgetown. It's really funny, because today Georgetown alumni chuckle and say "Thank God for Patrick Ewing" for making Georgetown so competitive academically by the popularity he brought to the school, enhancing the perceived value of a Georgetown degree.

You are bringing back a bad memory. I was at the game in 1981 at the Garden when G'Town killed us. I hated the game and result, but more importantly, never felt more ashamed of our fan behavior than at that game. Our fans started with that Ewing can't read crap during the pregame, and continued it after the game began. If I recall correctly, Ewing began the game by blocking someone's shoth (might have been David Russell), then racing down court for a vicious dunk. The chants continued for a few minutes before folks just shut up as we were being humiliated.

I was at that game. We got slaughtered and I left early.
