We are flying under everyone's radar.

How do you feel about that? I can argue both sides. We may be one of the only top 17 teams no one is talking about? Maybe aside from Utah and Iowa State, but then again we are a NYC market. Is it because no one thinks we are legit? It would be nice to get a few more national mentions from the press/commentators, etc. for recruiting. Flying under the radar is good also as teams are not necessarily extremely motivated for us. Like LBS and Tulane. Anyway, glad how the season is going so far.

Who do you want to talk about us?

I don't really agree. Big East has been getting good press this year, and they usually include SJU in those conversations. I mean, even watching football on Fox I've seen ads for the Big East and SJU the past few weeks.

Seth Davis has similar comments concerning future recognition. The media will explode anout the team if they can beat Duke

Also interesting to hear Tim Doyles comments (in video) about the hurdles SJU faces in recruiting. I know many of you will focus on his inaccurate comment about the dorms, but the rest of his thoughts are key factors whether fans want to recognize it or not.

Hard to take the guy seriously when he stil thinks the school has no dorms.

And, if we had no dorms, we'd probably be in a much easier situation recruiting wise. We wouldn't be Kentucky or Duke, but at least we'd have $1,100 a month to legally sell to the kids (at least, that's what the stipend used to be - I'm sure it would have gone up over time).

We still have a stipend

I don't think Tim meant Zero dorms, I mean he lived in the St Johns dorms as a frosh didn't he? But he just wanted to make the point that St Johns is still really a glorified commuter school without the usual campus life and campus driven neighborhood support. It's an urban campus, even if it is in Queens, and that is unlike most schools, especially big time sports schools. In most big time college towns there are entire economies built to cater to students. I guess Tim also knows that the Sly Fox closed and there's no more bars left, though to be fair he left STJ before he was of legal drinking age anyway. ;)

To be honest I don't think the things he mentions come into play for big time basketball players. Campus life is the least of their concerns.

Yes, but the payout's not nearly as sweet as it was, pre-dorms. Minimal advantage now, if it even is one at all.

Hey Mont lol let the ap voters sleep, their votes can't keep us out of the NCAA tourny this year.
It's in our hands once we're in it.
As for other teams, I'm sure that they are fully aware of what we're doing this year. They'll see the #15 in front of our name, and they'll be up for us.

I dunno, I've seen the other side of it having gone to UConn. The players are treated literally like rock stars on campus and are legit celebrities in the state. The atmosphere on schools like that is not comparable. These days kids love having their ego's stroked and it doesn't get much better than that.

I've commented quite often on how hard of a sell SJU must be in this day and age.

I live in Charlotte,NC area and we had the headline in the Observer today in college basketball section. under the radar is fine keep climbing & winning.

You know, I didn't believe it when I wrote it either but I was trying to get back on everyone's good side after calling STJ a glorified commuter school.

Need to win games in conference before we get those to believe

Room. right on. A very difficult sell, but Lavin is the one guy able to sell it. Astonishingly down to the wire with Mega-school Kentucky on Briscoe, where the scales of justice are completely skewed in Kentucky's favor.
A lot of posters here don't get it, they may think that a guy like Hurley is the answer but he never came to St. John's for the very reasons that you mentioned. Now he is going to be able to sell it. Ridiculous.
Same with the other folly. No one has been able to "sell" St.John's to recruits like Lavin. Just look at the last decade.

One other issue that is stronger than anyone is giving credit is the conference affiliation. Yes the BE signed a number of top 100 kids so far this year and is looking good, but nationally its now seen as a step below the top 5. That's why the early non con success was seen as such a surprise. Small schools, no football, no friends at ESPN. This will no doubt impact recruiting in the future and will need to be addressed with all prospects.

Also in Charlotte , SJU alumni coordinator, and we had the headline in the Charlotte Observer again today. I believe the next time will be similar to the first time.
