Villanova (MSG), Wed., Jan. 24, 8:30p, FS-1

Soriano had a great game and Team Defense was stifling to the Cats . Taylor is a relentless Defender and disrupted Nova getting the ball inbounds on numerous trips .
The Press just seemed to wear them down and took away any swagger that Novs typically has .

Dixon is under sized to be playing Center in the BE. They list him as 6’8” but , I’m doubtful about that . He’s more a PF , a nice player .

BE Centers need be 7’ or near . Clingan , Kalkenbrenner , Igodaro , Soriano , etc .

Joel needs to play against those guys like he played last night .

Alleyne was missed but , Dingle stepped up with 12 points . We benefitted from him playing again .

Marillac didn’t comment on his 0-5 3 point shooting but , that’s not unexpected .

Getting Alleyne back for X is a big plus . Hopefully he can go 100 percent .. Wilcher played well and seemed more comfortable than he has been.

Dunlap didn’t get a lot of looks and seemed nervous at the foul line . He’s missed more than a few in recent games . As a team , we are barely mediocre at the line .
In close games , we can’t afford not hitting 75 percent or more . Especially down the stretch of the BE season .

I would be happy beating Creighton and SH at home and winning 4 against the Hoyas and DePaul . X on the road is pick ‘em game .

It would be a bonus to beat Butler and / or PC on the Road . Winning at Marquette and beating UCONN at the Garden would be miracle stuff .

We could have hired Jay Wright but the powers that be(including Louie) insisted on
Hiring Jarvis
Jay Wright was not JAY WRIGHT when Mike Jarvis was hired to replace Fran in 1998. At that time, he had a losing record at Hofstra. 97-98, Speedy Claxton's sophmore season, was the first time Hofstra finished with a winning record. It was Jay's fourth year. No high major school was looking yo hire Coach Wright in 1998. He definitely was not in the conversation for St Johns.

By 2001 Coach Wright had established himself as an up and coming coach and Villanova fired Steve Lappas to hire him. Lappas had not done poorly at Villanova, but their Administration acted then because they were afraid that Rutgers or St Johns would have made a run at him by the next year.

Fun Fact: Jay Wright himself told me that while he was at Hofstra, St Johns was his Dream Job!!!

Kudos to Joel for finding his offensive game and running a couple of sweet pick and rolls with Jenkins. And props to Wilcher who I thought would be out played but held his own with much more physical Nova guards. He also made some turnovers happen early on with his scrappy play and hit two fine mid range jump shots.

I think that is the problem
Nobody shoots 8-9 every night
It is funny for a fan base that either is apathetic or thinks all is well all the time, our best player always seems to get unfairly treated on here.
See Harrison, Deangelo.
To me it wasn’t even about the Fg%, it was about his engagement out there on the court. He was locked in last night. I think Dixon and him have a little rivalry and want to outplay each other.

I’ve never had a problem with Soriano this year except for the games where he looks disinterested. which had been going on the last couple games. So last night was nice to see

I think part of the problem is he needs more touches. Wouldn’t you get frustrated if you are asked to be primary rebounder and are the best player but go long stretches without seeing the ball and lesser players constantly shoot more?

Got there after Half once the kids were down... wasn't gonna miss a Sweep of Nova.
Takeaways:
-What a response when Nova cut it to 5... their fans got Loud... (would by lying if I didn't think "Here we go again..."
-Defense... HOUNDING- they play like that- they will be in Every game regardless of Offense
-Dingle got After a couple Rebounds- good to see that hustle from him
-Brady... he looks like he wants to get off that Foul Line as quick as possible... doesn't look comfortable there
-Moore looks like a shell of himself- sad- was a special player prior to his original injury.

People might not like hearing it... but what i assume was the Nova fans leaving early... MSG looked as packed as it mid-CMA era... was surprised by the sparseness of SJU fans at the end... who I would expect to stay till the end of a 20 pt win and first sweep in 30 yrs of Nova...

Got to meet Maher and the rest of sec114 North... you guys got a nice lil lounge area up there... they may let you guys do Bottle service lol.

Can't wait for Feb 3rd! gonna be 50/50 fan support- rest your vocals fellas...

absolutely and I definitely noted this in the thread dedicated to Joel.

I understand the spells of disinterest from him for sure. But at the same time I don’t think we can really afford it.

I still think the key to everyone being happy is we start making some 3s. Defense overplay the Soriano post up because they are not afraid of Dingle, Ledlum, or Jenkins to step out and hit a 3. They even let Luis have a couple open ones too (I think he made one). Brady too has been clanking it up. If we could get a couple guys to get hot from 3 in Feb/March I think everything opens up for us
