Van Macon

Good point except that Van has been around allot longer then both of those guys and I would think that his goals may be higher cause of that.
Slice left Pitt where he had a good run as an assistant and took the Manhattan College job, just saying.

Its not a one size fits all kind of thing.

Honest question, how successful would sju have to be with Macon as an assistant, for him to warrant a first time head coaching job that wasn’t at the mid/low local level?

He’ll have to work his way up just like those guys.

How successful? Well he would have to do more then a great recruiting job. Since he's a designated Associate Head Coach, much of the teams fortunes will be tied to his coaching as well as Anderson's. As with all promotions to head coaching positions, schools generally look for post season success. How did Holloway get so desirable so quickly? It wouldn't have been from winning his conference or even an undefeated season there. When you win some games in the Big Dance (especially when you are not supposed to) your stock rises rapidly. Again, its post season success.

So in answer to your question, for Van to get any serious consideration for some legit D1 jobs, the johnnies would have to get a few appearances into the Big Dance and win a game or two there.

In terms of Neptune, his return to Nova was as much as done a deal as Brian Mahoney getting the SJU job and most recently Jon Scheyer getting the Duke job. Long time successful head coaches have a pretty big say in their successors.

Holloway got so desirable because he took the low major job after being a successful assistant coach. He didn’t jump right to it. Which is the point of all this. A St. John’s assistant isnt going to get a bigger first head job than a low/mid major.

And how did Norm Roberts, Steve Wojciechowski, John Kress, Tommy Amaker, Steve Lavin, etc. etc. etc. and many other assistant coaches get head jobs. Success at a mid major is not an exclusive path to a D1 job. Success as an assistant in a big time successful program with great NCAA tourney results has a good track record of getting assistants big time jobs. Should the Johnnies get to the point where they are regulars in the Dance, you can bet your season ticket that Van will land a nice D1 job. I hope I was able to clear this up.

I'll give up my seatbacks that Van will get a nice job....Oh wait...I HAVE NONE TO GIVE UP!!!!

Not sure if you can tell but the seatbacks are kind of a peeve for me...

I would just settle for stair rails in the upper deck so I don't break my neck up there. :)

Leave it to St Johns fans about worrying if an assistant is going to get a HC job when we still haven't been to an NCAA in several years. Such is the boring time of summer. Just be happy that Macon is bringing home the Bacon
Lol. Thanks for the reality dose. I did comment on it but it was more of a projection based on the recruiting uptick which if continued for the next two or three classes might increase the possibility of interest by something other than a low or mid-major D1 program.
e
And yes. I am happy about Macon bringing home the bacon and Vetrone has on his traveling shoes and expanding the Johnnies recruiting footprint.

For a few years I thought he was fakin' lol. How about even an NIT appearance?

After this next heat wave rolls through and bakes our brains some more the Johnnies will be looking like Final Four contenders. Just wait until a few positive tidbits drift back from the DR trip. ;)

That all being said I'm thrilled with Van " Bringing home the Bacon " Macon and Shoes also

Norm- Kansas
Woj- Duke
Lav- ucla and was in house hire.
These are all in a different world than sju assistant coach.

Kresse- his first head coaching job was an NAIA school.

I really don’t see the argument you are trying to make.

What’s a nice D1 job and what isn’t? I think the manhatten job is well within reach for a successful SJU assistant to land as first gig. Don’t see much at a level higher than that.

As someone mentioned earlier on the thread, the key here is momentum - as in we have it and it's actually moving forward on the recruiting trail.
Lav and Mullin were already fizzling out by now.
So trending in the right direction is a good thing.
And yes, it's only meaningful if the results are on the court.
But right here, right now...it ain't no shame to be happy.

Bracca - SF NY (Of course we lost to them)

Dunlap , SJ assistant coach to NBA head coach.

That’s an interesting one. Definitely bigger than low major college job, though dunlaps situation was a unique one with Lavs absence.

Also Lavin only got the UCLA job because Harrick was fired about a week before the season started. If they had a full search Lavin would not have gotten the job. Then after getting to an elite 8 they kind of had to keep him even if they weren't sure they wanted to.
