Van Macon

While he got a promotion and raise last year...give him another one. He is worth it. Van and Shoes are going to change this program.
Uhmm... yes they are going to help CMA change this program and thank god he had the foresight to hire them and that they wanted to work with him. CMA has always fostered great relationships with his assistants and he has always been extremely loyal to them, sometimes to his own detriment at Arkansas and I am sure that's what helped him with the Macon hire at the outset.

At some point soon, Macon will be offered a job as a head man somewhere so CMA better be keeping a list of top candidates on hand. I'm glad Shoes is in place if that happens.

Hopefully, TJ has gotten more acclimated to the landscape of NY basketball as well.

I don't want this to sound selfish. Van has done an amazing job. Lots of people are very very good #2's and not cut out to be #1. Need I remind anyone of Norm Roberts. Some have made great careers out of just being the right hand to the HC. Hope Van chooses this career path. Selfishly I guess.

Brian Mahoney to name another

Van should be on the shortlist of any metro mid-major with an HC opening. You'd be crazy not to consider him.
Since most coaching candidates are sort after for their post season success, I would think that it’s a bit premature for Anderson’s assistants to be highly sort after for head coaching positions in major D1 programs at this point in time. Let’s get a few Dance invites and wins before we start to worry.

Glenn Braica and Chris Casey were scooped up by St. Francis and Niagara after their glorious run with Norm.

Either you misread the post that you replied to or you intentionally took a swipe at Anderson when you saw an opportunity because no one said anything about Macon getting swooped up by a major D1 program. Common sense would seem to indicate that at this point in time, in his next move, why would Van consider anything but a high level mid major or a major? Hey Fat, instead of worrying about whether I took a swipe at Anderson, which I clearly did not, take care of yourself and see a doctor. From your posit appears to me that you suffer from a condition called Palilalia.

Good point except that Van has been around allot longer then both of those guys and I would think that his goals may be higher cause of that.
Honest question, how successful would sju have to be with Macon as an assistant, for him to warrant a first time head coaching job that wasn’t at the mid/low local level?

He’ll have to work his way up just like those guys.

David Patrick was Musselman's Associate Head coach at Arkansas during the first of back to back elite eight runs and he left for a similar job at Oklahoma. Musselman has had back to back Elite Eight runs and hasn't had any coach hired to run a high D1 program nor has any of them come calling for any of his assistants and nor has any significant mid-majors so I wouldn't expect High D1 programs to come calling for Macon even if St. John's had a similar run.

It is not easy to win at a mid-major and success is far from guaranteed but if you take that leap it is the easiest path to a D1 head job if you are not a "head coach in waiting" but you have to turn some heads with sustained success or a big splashy run in the Big Dance.

The down side is if you suck, now you have to go back to square one and hope there is a situation that you like at a major D1 program where the assistants can earn as much as a low major head coach. Probably is also the reason why many "career" assistants don't take the leap at a mid-major job unless it is a really good fit.

Hopefully, Macon is really happy with being back home in NY and so far he seems to be working well with Coach Anderson on getting St John's off of the mat and back into the fray in the Big East.

If Anderson can rebuild St John's and maintain sustained success, plus reinvigorate the NYC basketball scene as it relates to St. John's, that would be a national story and would considerably raise Macon's profile as being a part of that success. If that happens, and Macon leaves, I will wish him well.

He has been, there's been a lot of teams over the last few years who have tried to "poach" him. So far thankfully, he's still ours and thriving.
