Van Macon Stepping Down

This is sad. Van is truly one of THE MOST well respected, well thought off, and well liked guys in this business. Talk to any coach in a 150 mile radius of St. John's and you won't hear a bad word about him. Talk to any parent who he's met to recruit their kid and they fall over their feet to praise him. He's been instrumental in landing solid talent here. Always the nicest guy, wishing him nothing but the best.

New professional opportunities could mean another coaching position elsewhere or possibly another profession. If the former, as we have not been putting as much emphasis on HS recruiting, I could see him looking elsewhere.

I am going to reiterate dk423’s point that it apparently isn’t a health related reason.

Van is indeed as Paultzman stated and SJUDave backed up, one of the good guys. Thank you Van and good luck on your future endeavors.

Sounds like he is pursuing professional jobs. I thought it might be health related since he had the health issues.

If he had any interest and I were Shaheen Holloway I would tried to hire him immediately.

Really solid professional with good contacts that he could use on his staff.

But it does not sound like he is interested in staying in the college game.

QUEENS, N.Y. (May 2, 2025) – Van Macon has stepped down from his position on the St. John’s men’s basketball staff to pursue new professional opportunities. Macon completed his sixth season on the Red Storm coaching staff in 2024-25 serving as an assistant coach. He previously spent two years as the program’s associate head coach from 2021-2023.

“We greatly appreciate Van Macon’s contributions to St. John’s Basketball and wish him the best in his future endeavors,” said Red Storm Head Coach Rick Pitino.

Over the past two years, Macon was a member of the Red Storm coaching staff that guided St. John’s to a 51-18 overall record including a 29-11 mark in BIG EAST play. The Johnnies finished a memorable 2024-25 campaign tying a program record with 31 victories and earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. St. John’s also took home the BIG EAST Regular Season and Tournament titles.

Macon arrived at St. John’s in 2019 serving as an assistant coach for his first two seasons. He was elevated to associated head coach for the next two years.

One of the younger staff members is assuming his responsibilities.
I would expect Greg Youncofski to move up from the DOBO position. He has four years experience as an Assistant Coach at Loyola Marymount prior to arriving here last year and has also served in various roles under Mick Cronin.

One of the Grad Assistants can then take his place as the DOBO.
