UMBC, Mon. Nov. 16, 7pm, FS1 & WNYM 970 AM

Yes we do.

In the past we had good outside shooters that were never provided room to develop due to coaching decisions. It has been a frustration for many Johnny fans since the 90's when it was at its worst.

Mullin has these guys shooting with confidence.

I think that by next year, with Mussini having to handle the ball as much as he is this year we will have one of the better backcourts, albeit still young, with 3 servicable options to handle the ball in Mussini, Ponds and Lovett. I am not writing off this year. Just looking forward. I still think this team will do more than many predicted after the first exhibition and the fact that we are running actual sets makes me think about doing cartwheels...as a public service I will refrain from actually performing one.

Just got home from the game. Hard to believe I actually enjoy watching St. John's basketball again.......after so many years. I would rather watch a less talented team who plays good ball, then a more talented team who plays poor ball. Was at the STAC game and was not nearly as concerned about that blow out loss as many. Love the heart and camaraderie on this team. Sima is a better basketball player already than Obekpa ever was//is. Going to enjoy watching him develop in to one of the best big men we've ever had here. Mvouka a steadying influence on the rest of the team and a good solid ballplayer. Mussini a right handed Ernie D, for those old enough to remember. Great court awareness and can put the ball in the hold. Jones playing with the fire in his belly that had been lacking in the past, I like the versatility of Williams and Johnson. Both can score from inside or outside, Still concerned about the team D. To many missed assignments and open looks. Also need to box out better. Have no doubt Chris and the staff will have the team working on those aspects of the game in practice tomorrow. The staff has not only done an incredible job putting this team together in such a short period of time, but also getting the to play like a cohesive unit. Highlight of my night was sitting next to TRabinowitz, and getting to meet and chat with the legendary Paultzman. Looking to go 3-0 on Thursday!!!!

Spot on post Monte. It was my pleasure to meet you & chat about our Johnnies. I look forward to many half time exchanges.

i was there also...really really fun to watch. expected errors for young team. If the frosh stay to develop this team is gonna be really really good, you can see some real talent there and coming in. Congrats boys and staff on terrific game. Go Johnnies!!!

Fun game to watch. Continue to be really impressed with Mussini and Sima. Awesome to see Johnson and Mvouika really get going like that. Ellison had a rough one but gotta let freshman be freshman I guess. Also I really like the way Jones is playing. Not trying to do too much, just working hard and playing his game. Encouraging win!

11 blocks for our bunch, too!

By the way, I like the sig, Beast. I've been "mind controlling" someone (possibly, two) for awhile.

Onward to Thursday, and taking care of Rutgers.

You're one of the really good guys on here. You get a +1 just to cause your detractors to click twice to have their intended effect.

I am pleased and surprised by getting out of the gate with two D1 wins. We are bound to get blasted soon by some good teams, and inevitably all this feel-good will dissolve. Hoping calmer heads will prevail. Until then, feel good is just fine.

A refreshing part of these two wins is that we don't have to endure either of the past two coaches telling us what a great win it was. Mullin has high expectations for this program, and he's lived through these games where coaches had to pull on the reigns, not use the whip. Getting here after such a bad D2 loss is terrific, but Mullin himself would tell you it was just a bad game. You are never as bad as you look when you play horribly, and never as good as when you pull off a great win.

Or as an alternative my dear Mr. B, consider doing your cartwheel in the confines of your own home!
Nice post

all the best

That would be a treat for me as well, sitting next to TR Mr.P and Monte - paying homage!

I wonder how posters unknown to each other connect? Do I wear a shirt emblazoned w/ SS&G :)

Great win
Nice posts!!!

Civil War uniform should do it. :)

Does it seem like they have chances to push after a miss and they opt to just get the ball to Mussini and have him bring it up?

We don't have much team speed, very hard to get many easy buckets. Being at the games Mullin is always instructing guy to get the ball to Mussini. If he gets hurt or worn out look out.

Yeah, this will be a long season but thus far it has been enjoyable watching these kids and new coach develop. This team with limited talent plays an enjoyable style of ball.

Mullin has 2 keepers on which to build his program: Mussini and Sima.

IMO Mullin is doing a very good job coaching this expansion type team.

Beat Rutgers !
I wouldn't give up on Ellison yet. He wasn't hitting his shots but he had a good amount of rebounds even though it was an off game

I like Ellison but so far he is a turnover machine and lost on D. He will be a very serviceable 4 year player which i really like.

Agree on all accounts. I caught him flat-footed a couple of times, while he was ball-watching (after shots by UMBC), and eventually, giving up an offensive rebound.

I think he'll be alright in the long run, but he has shown the occasional deer in headlights look, and needs to play a bit smarter. It's only the first couple of games, so there is a TON of time to rectify those issues.

And in time with added strength he will finish better, all part of freshman development. I noticed his HS teammate Carter is getting about 12 minutes a game at Marquette. Unless you have Tyler Ennis type talent, you have to expect slow progression path. As you guys said, Ellison will be a solid four year player.

I think the fact that his father is a pro will aid in his progression.

Gentlemen we have four players with rust issues whose development has been hindered as a result of serious injuries. Johnson and Mvouika both showed very encouraging signs last night. Ellison and Williams have each played a total of 2 games of Division 1 basketball. Let's have a little larger sample body of work before we categorise their entire collegiate careers.
