UCONN considers itself NYC’s “Sixth Borough.”

They're where we want to be both in terms of consistent success and style of play, plus there is no indication they cheated to get there. I think Mullin looks on Wright's program as a model to emulate, in fact he's said as much. Dear NCJohnnie
I am frustrated that we used to be on top and now live in the shadow of Villanova and Gonzaga and similar SMALL CATHOLIC NON-FOOTBALL SCHOOLS.
There is no good god damned reason we cannot be where Villanova and Gonzaga are.
So yes Villanova annoys me (not
like UConn or Syracuse of course) - like the dreaded NE Patriots I give them credit for their accomplishments - but I’m
More frustrated and focus on:

ST JOHNS BEING ST JOHNS AGAIN - near the top casting shadows on
Others.
So there!

Good for fellow BE rival Villanova to be succeeding
But more meaningful to
Me that the Red Storm continue to move - in the Army there was the “ move out phase” of an
Operation. Let’s Move Out onto the next tier of 20 Ws and a tournament show!
All the best
Hope I explained my feelings.

Got it SS&G. Understand you want SJU to overtake small Catholic schools like Nova and the Zags. I also long for us to get back to our glory days. Just don't like to see Nova, a program for which I have great respect, lumped in with Cuse and UCONN, programs I have much less respect for. I look at schools like Nova & PC as friendly rivals not despicable enemies. All the best and as Chicago days would say Let's go Johnnies!
UConn may not be the 6th borough, but it still bothers me that they get exclusive coverage on SNY, a new York sports channel, and we don't.
Didn't they sign that deal when Ollie's team won it all? I doubt the average NYC area sports fan watching that station cares about pukon sports. SNY has scored the hat trick with backing losers: Mets, Jets and pukon.

I think it’s great for Villanova to become the B.B. Power it is .. And , they do it the Wright way ! The BE Conference is the All Catholics plus Butler, which is a fine school with great tradition . I too, like Nova and Providence , when they aren’t playing us . My Granddaughter was all set to go to Villanova , until she was accepted to Notre Dame this Spring . It was a tough choice as she had a personal visit with Jay Wright when she took her Campus visit . He gave her one of his Attitude Bracelets . But, ND is still ND . Nova is getting close to that status Academically . St John’s needs to continue to improve in B.B. and also, to upgrade its Academics . I think both are headed in the right direction . As a Tobin School Alum, I am very impressed with the leadership of the new Dean and her vision for the future of Business Education at the University .

Morning General,

I agree.
While I rant at the likes of UCONN, LOU, ‘CUSE, G*TOWN, Duke, UNC, Kansas. KY, etc., it annoys and frustrates me that we’ve become irrelevant these past 20+ years to the likes of Zaga, Nova, Seton Hall, Providence, Xavier, et al.
There is no reason we shouldn’t be at their level or better—campus be damned.
I do thing we’re on our way—finally—and I ‘like’ Nova and admire the classy & winning program GQ-packaged Jay Wright has assembled there.
CM can do that at St. John’s, despite the stumble out of the gate (for obvious reasons).
Let’s hope.

Don’t malign my Mets, but I admit they have ‘issues’ as do the Jets.
Wonder when that contract with UCONN expires?
Would be great if we were the rising and dominant program in the NYC Metro at that point and inked a deal like that.

Don't know but they always make a big deal out of Auriema and the ladies team who are the real franchise of pukon sports. How many SNY viewers do you think get pumped when they know those highlights are next?

Ok okay thanks, Section9. Wonder if they’d splice the deal to retain the women’s team but exclude the UCONN men’s team and add St. John’s men’s team?
UCONN would huff and puff.
Probably never happen.
I no longer get local NY Sports channels, so I don’t know.
But maybe, we could get a deal with MSG?

Nice to have rivals, but we have sucked for most part so long that the program has gotten minimal attention, deservedly so. Instead of moaning about UConn, Cuse, etc., perhaps the better antidote is winning. Hopefully the cure starts this season to avoid continued irrelevance. I do believe SJU will have the season we have long waited for in 18-19 and hopefully get on track for sustained success.

Yes Paultz, it seems to be a building, budding, consensus on the Board—along with the proverbial gnashing of teeth about this ‘n that.
You’re right. Winning resolves the issues and contains within it the seeds of consistent success by reviving the great St. John’s tradition.
Let’s hope, and let’s go Johnnies.

ND is still ND but you should have at least influenced her to attend a Big East school. Georgetown is Georgetown and Villanova is no Georgetown.;)

And btw, there was no Tobin School of Business in your day! It was called the School of Accounting and Abacus Studies.:p

I live in CT. SNY was not on any. Cable system in the state, that only happened after they picked up UConn. As a Mets fan I am grateful they did; well sometimes anyway.

Frankly it makes more sense for SNY to carry UCONN than SJU no matter the teams fortunes. Regional sports networks make most of their money in carrier charges, not advertising. UCONN in the winter is a reason that households in New England demand their cable outlets carry SNY. Carriers in the metro area already need to carry SNY for the Mets coverage. UCONN better expands their reach, as did Syracuse (who they had a deal with before they went ACC.) I can't see that changing.

“Carrier charges”?
Aren’t those based on viewership size measured by Nielsen Ratings, as in ‘eyeballs’ per market?
Isn’t the NY Metro Market, much larger than the New England market?
You seem to know what you’re talking about, IDRAFT.
I sure don’t.
Just asking.

Back in the day, when I was a student, SJU had a bus trip to Syracuse. It was February. I woke up in the hotel and turned on the radio to hear something like "The high temperature will be Minus 1"....hell on earth.
Sixth borough my a--. More like the crappy attic above a really great party. I am still convinced they (Boeheim) somehow convinces kids that SU is "just minutes from NYC". How he ever recruited top talent there is amazing.
I live in Syracuse, but I went to St. John's. Syracuse has many problems, mostly economic, but the drivel about the weather is exactly that, drivel. It is a place where a couple can raise a family and not break the bank in the process. We live in Syracuse when it snows they have the ability to remove it before you get out of work. We do not get crippled like New York City does after getting 6-8 inches. I love St. John's, but I am also very fond of where I live. I get tired of the garbage I read on here slamming Syracuse with a derogatory remark every once in a while by someone trying to be funny,
BTW Frank I was not intending to slam your city just that team orange team. I’m glad you enjoy and appreciate where you live!
General, I live here and slam them every day. When I am moving around the city I will usually where our Red and White shirts, and sweaters and will invariably have some idiot make some kind of inane remark, it really is fun.
Frank, you are one of my favorite posters for sure. I didn't know you lived in Syracuse. Three of my best friends went to LeMoyne, and 2 of them still live in Syracuse (one in Skaneateles) Just spent a weekend with all three on what's become an annual guy's weekend. I can echo everything you say about cost of living there, and other than summer sometimes arriving in June with cold springs, and snow arriving late September to early October, it can be a pretty nice place to live.

Visiting my friends at LeMoyne in the winter, I recall hearing the jingle of snow plows with chains in the middle of the night during "tiny" snow falls of a foot or so. You'd wake up and the place would be blanketed in snow, but the streets were all cleared already.

You guys know how much I love Villanova, BUT, right now they are friendly rivals because we are far below their level. When we approach their level of success, I will hate them as much as the other schools you mention.
