UCONN back to Big East?

The Big East soon could be adding a familiar foe.

Obviously not the most reliable source ever, but chatter on the Boneyard seems to back it up.

I do look forward to a 20 game round-robin, but Dan Hurley in the Big East worries me. We’ll see what happens.

I hope this never happens. Yukon and all of the other greedy football schools that left the Big East basketball schools "flat" (does anybody still use that term?) ruined what once was the best basketball conference in the country. It turned out to be a bad move for Yukon. They sunk a lot of money into their football program and have sucked for many years. And their other sports have suffered as well, having been stuck in a second tier conference since they left the Big East.

To Yukon and all of those schools that blew us off, I say good riddance!! You didn't want any part of us then - we don't want and part of you you now. Lick your wounds and suck it up!! Enjoy being in a second tier conference. You made your bed - enjoy laying in it.

Iit is a business.

After the ACC absorbed USyracuse, Pitt, Norte Dame and Louisville, and The Big 10 absorbed Rutgers and Maryland most Yukon fans believed that Yukon would be the “next in” to either the ACC or Big 10 however with the passage of time and strengthening of other programs the Yukon fans are beginning to understand that Houston, UCF and Memphis May be more likely additions to the ACC.

IF........ the Big East’s media consultants believe that Yukon will provide a value in renewal negotiations greater than the financial share it would receive from it’s Conference share, and
iF........ there is a whopping financial penalty for Yukon to thereafter leaving the Big East (think ACC style “grant of media rights for Yukon basketball”, or $100M departure fee) then and only then the admitting them makes sense.

The hell with a departure fee; $100 mil. buy in fee.

“The report cited the 2020-21 academic year as the target for the Huskies’ switch from the American Athletic Conference. There is no indication of what the school would do with its football program.

How accurate is this? In multiple conversations with insiders, the move has been described as inevitable to USA Today Network New Jersey, but the timetable and details are unconfirmed at this time. Obviously it could not happen in time for 2019-2020 with schedules already being finalized.”

“Admitting a public college would alter the dynamics of a conference that is comprised of only private schools (side note: Butler is private but not Catholic), but the view of Big East members as described to USA Today New Jersey is this: UConn’s cache and potential to strengthen the Big East’s position long-term would outweigh any such concerns.

As explained to USA Today New Jersey, UConn’s return would be accompanied by a substantial exit penalty. That is not addressed in the Digital Sports Desk report.”

Totally agree...a buy-in fee would be the right way to go.

I don't like the idea of adding a large state school in with all the privately funded schools. They have a large financial advantage; especially over a school like St. Johns.
If this happens do they add a 12th school to round it out or stay at 11?

Good call! Why is that never mentioned? If they can spend millions on coaches, facilities and travel, then they can some donors to put together a buy-in to save their basketball program.

That should happen, without a doubt.

Looks like a done deal. I know no one gives a shit but I hate this move for St. Johns on a lot of levels!!

As a SJU fan I don’t want UCONN in this conference, I rather them suffer in the AAC playing Tulsa every year. But from a financial standpoint and from the BE’s viewpoint, it’s a good move. Going to 20 conference games is the new wave.

As someone who wanted to see UConn back, here are two ways this will benefit St. John's:

1. Higher attendance for one game per year (at MSG, too- UConn will draw better than the big majority of Big East teams)
2. Most likely this will result in a better payout for our next TV contract, which I'm sure is being negotiated right now. That helps all 11 teams.

With the way UConn is recruiting, it is only a matter of time before they become elite again. I rather they do that in the Big East than the AAC.

That said, I do certainly hope they have a high exit fee.

Especially the UConn women.

1. Wonderful another home game that becomes a road game
2. Does the tv demo for that area say that?

If you don’t want UConn in because they will takeover MSG that speaks to a larger problem with the fan base and support. If we as fans can’t protect our home court that’s our problem, we shouldn’t try to avoid other schools we should do better as fans. Btw, nova, Georgetown, seton hall. None of these teams took over the garden and made it a road game last year. If St. John’s has a good team out there the fans respond. Being afraid of UConn is BS. Let them into MSG and let’s kick their ass

I guess I'm in the minority but I like this move. I used to think that UConn was an impediment to us, but the truth is that we only failed ourselves. Our hires have been horrific, and we have made tons of terrible decisions. That's why we have been so down...not because of UConn. Will they battle us for more recruits? Maybe...but IMO they still would've picked them in the AAC over us anyway if they were that interested in them. So no real difference IMO.

What it comes down to is, do you want our conference more stable or less stable? In the event of a NCAA breakaway, adding UConn makes it much, much harder to leave us out of further alignment. We all know the BE is major, but adding UConn closes the casket on any criticism that it isn't and buries it for good. We can't run on emotion...we have to run on sound business decisions. It's a business and we will get more money and exposure for adding them. We all know Hurley will get them back to being at least a likely top 25 team soon...why let the AAC reap the benefits? The AAC was just starting to get pretty good to be honest...it's a great time to pluck them just before they ripen. This will strengthen fan attendance, rivalries, history, tradition, branding, TV deals, and eyeballs nationally. I hate UConn just as much as the next guy, but this is the right move for our conference. Only we control our destiny.
