UCONN and New Coach Hurley

Which situation is worse: Jets never getting a real franchise QB or SJ never getting a real coach since Lou? If Mullin fails next year we can say goodbye to Ponds and others will definitely transfer to jump ship. At that point I don't see how you can't beg him to resign. You can't tell me we'd be 0-11 at any point under Hurley. As a program, we need to stop going for the hail mary that never succeeds and go for a safe first down pass. Make a smart choice...doesn't have to be a sexy name.

Jarvis and Frashilla were real coaches before coming... successful at smaller conferences just like Hurley.

Let's see what he does at UCONN before annointing him the next 900+ game winner.

If they had he'd be leaving sju for UCONN today. That is if his career wasnt in the dumped by now, like every other guy who left hers

If Mullin fails next year, Ponds will be the least of our problems as there is no guarantee he will be here then. Let's recruit a Big East bench first and get one more big to play with Keita and I can't see Mullin failing next year. The most important thing is for St. John’s and Mullin to sign their 2019 targets early because if we don't get early commitments it means our recruits are not sold on the staff or program. Remember, Lavin was fired after winning 21 games and an NCAA bid but no impact recruit signings. You are as good as your recruiting and it remains to be seen if Matt and Mullin can deliver with a stacked 2019 class after pursuing these players for 3 years now.

He wins everywhere he goes. He'll win there too. But a strong UConn doesn't affect us if the staff does what they need to do. The problem is that we rarely do what we need to do.

Agree and that’s the risk, LJSA. Give Hurley his due.
Still, at this time, St. John’s has the better platform: NYC and the BEC, and I would argue a better roster—although getting 1-2 quality bigs is vital to our revival next year.
And we need to win to be able to corral those 2019 recruits early on—as ‘72 rightly notes.
So long as UCONN does not rejoin the BEC, I think our future will surpass theirs hands-down, because of our platform and—if we win—that variable becomes tougher for any other program from a 2nd Tier Conference to beat.
Top recruits breathe to play on the Broadway Stage with a winner.
No matter ‘who’ the coach is for UCONN.
.

Here is the bottom line with Hurley as competition. We have a head start on Uconn. Win next year and work harder than Hurley recruiting. Dont let him as head coach be seen more than you in Gyms across the tri state area. If the reverse happens and he is seen out working you as head coach than there is only 1 person to blame

In addition to Cincy, Wichita St and Houston Memphis just fired a known commodity in Tubby Smith who just won 20+ games after just 2 years and UCONN just fired an alum who averaged 21 wins a year for 6 years including a NC run in 2014 let alone that UCONN just hired one of the best young up and coming coaches. What does that tell you? Those schools want to be mediocre. Those schools tolerate being second rate. No it tells me those schools are serious and are not interested in any significant period of mediocrity, they want to win big. Combine those 2 with the other 3 and in a couple of years you can have a good conference.

And enough with simply deeming a job less than another job because of conference affiliation. History, recent tradition and money/facilities matter. Are you telling me if Mick Cronin leaves Cincy that Cincinnati is not a good job because they are in the AAC, really? Are you going to tell me Rutgers is a better job than UCONN or Gonzaga because they play in a conference that is overall considered stronger? Guess again. Danny turned down Rutgers but didn't turn down UCONN. Why? I don't care about conference affiliation, UCONN is a better job than Rutgers any day of the week and 3 times on Sunday.

Everyone seems to be happy to give Mullin 6 years or beyond automatically. To be honest, I think this season showed that our coaching staff are on the ropes despite LoVett. Next year will either confirm this or show the LoVett departure and depth were the culprits.

It's been 3 years, stop talking about what's going to happen in 2021. Posters here may have varying opinions on the progress of the team and staff, but the general consensus is that next year is a very important year for the program - no one is denying that. Please stop beating this dead horse already.

All most fans do here is beat dead horses. No need to beat each other regardless of opinion or how many times some bang the drum. It's going to be a long off season. Get used to hearing that drum over and over again. As with Mike Zaun, many old timers tend to repeat themselves. Until there is a breakthrough season fans should expect more of the same.
Questioned by the mods as to the motive for his shooting Joe3, jhansonbro17 responds: "They shoot horses, don't they?"

My intention is not to beat dead horses so my apologies, but it seems many people have unrealistic expectations of a sports forum. As 72 said, every post will be beating dead horses if you want to be technical. How can there be new material in an offseason? There's a lot of frustration surrounding the fanbase and I don't blame anyone for feeling such. Let's hope this is all moot and I eat some well-cooked crow next year.

Mullins first order of business is to get at least 1 competent grad transfer big. Let’s see how this plays out.

LOL. Richard, now that's a dead horse we can all gather around. The elusive competent big that we didn't get last year was (besides the Lovett mystery) the single biggest factor we didn't make any tournament.

Unfortunately when there is really very little to talk about, we find a theme to cling to and it is easier to be negative about that theme than it is to be positive and hey, who knows, maybe some others who really have nothing positive to say join you. It's like being at a game and someone puts a balloon in the air and you have people trying their best to keep it up in the air. The balloon really does nothing to enhance or add to the game, but you have fans breaking their ass to keep that balloon up there.
