Tip OFF dinner last night

Maybe Bradley was picked over Barry because Barry was always perceived to have an abrasive attitude or personality and bradley was perceived as a better team player. Situation compares to Bobby Knight cutting charles barkley from Olympic team in favor of lesser talented players. And Diehardjohnny if you meant you think Barry was better than Bradley at the time of the tryouts that is one thing but career wise they were not even in the same stratosphere, Barry was a superstar and Bradley was pedestrian in comparison (and I always liked Dollar Bill).

I thought Knight screwed Barkley for sure.
I saw Barry as a ny net shoot like 20 shots in a game w/out missing the only guy better as a shooter was pistol pete
in my memory. Rick used to underhand freethrows too

For those who weren't around back then, Barry was coming off a Junior year at Miami were he scored 32.2 pts a game, and pulled down 16.4 rebounds. Shot 55% from the field, and his usual 85% from the line. Dollar Bill was coming off a year of 22.2 pts 12.4 rebs, 52% and 85%.....

FWIW, Ricks last son, Canyon, is redshirting as a frosh this year at College of Charleston - 3rd Barry brother to play for Bobby Cremins. 6'6 180. He actually has a BETTER bloodline than half-brothers Brent, Jon, Drew and Scooter. HIS mom, Ricks 2nd wife, is Lynn Norenberg, an all american at William and Mary in basketball & Track - a W&M hall of famer, and the only woman (any sport) to have her number retired by the school (18.8 pts, 62%FG for her career, and a 3 time academic All American)...

Great info cr but if Rick's son is a freshman at Coll of C this season he is not playing for Bobby Cremins who had to retire for health reasons.

I went also. It was a great night. Barry said he did not get picked for the Olympic team because they had a certain quota system-I believe that he was saying that they had to pick a certain number of players from different conferences.

Although I think Barry can come-off as bitter, I believe a lot has to do with the fact that he probably was an amazingly competitive guy-sometimes there is a fine line between being incredibly competitive and coming off as a jerk.

When I asked one of the assistants what he was most surprised about in a good way about this year's team, he said it was how much Okpeka knows about that the game for someone who has not been playing it that long.

It seems pretty clear that they are going to have D Harrison handle the ball as much as possible.

I don't think Francesa will mc any event going forward.

I can't say enough about what a wonderfully kind and gracious man Coach Louie is. He really seemed to enjoy himself at the dinner. He always has time for everyone and at the dinner was no exception. He spoke to everyone and took pictures with everyone. St. John's is so lucky to have a man of his caliber representing them all these years.

Not a big fan of either Boomer or Carton but I thought they did a okay job headlining the night.

I did find a remark by Boomer offensive. It happened when Carton kidded him about Barry calling him Phil instead of Boomer. Boomer said that when Barry said that and Barry followed up with a question of "how are your boys", Boomer apparently playing the part of Phil Simms said something in sum and substance about one of his sons doing drugs and being in jail. That was totally out of line. It appears clear that Boomer has a real underlying bitterness towards Phil Simms.

Mea Culpa !!!

Didn't intend to be abrupt.

My apologies.

Barry also mentioned that he was a late addition to the tryouts as someone dropped out. I don't recall the name of the fellow.

I believe Rick was a senior at Miami at the time.

It's funny, once during his playing days BArry was asked by a reporter about going head to head against the great Bill Bradley. Instead of saying something gratuitous, Barry replied that in no way was Bradley great, and was merely a good player nothing more. I didn't know the the animosity had legs going back to Olympic tryouts, but his comments lacked such decorum in an unprovoked question that I wondered where it came from.

The worst I ever heard were that opponents said when you were guarded by Bradley you would get shoved, scratched, poked, and even have your hair pulled. I think it was Jack Marin (who had some great duels with Bradley) who said that.

thanks apology accepted interesting Barry being a sr & not making that team leads me to assume he knew he was
better than Bradley & said it it at the dinner for losing out at a chance for gold medal.
Both played in nj so he must have out dueled bradley in hs also. This was Ricks chance to release his side of the story in front of bb fans that he was screwed.
Some may feel thats bitterness but a Athletes once in a life chance at gold is spoiled can haunt him 4 ever.
Ricks had like 3 sons play in nba truly amazin

While $ Bill played college ball at Princeton, he played his high school basketball in Missouri.

Rick certainly couldn't be faulted if he was somewhat bitter at the slight. Wouldn't disagree at all with your view that this has haunted him.

Again, in those days, the composition of the team was pretty much decided even before practices began. So as they say, the fix was in.

Interesting that when Rick was at Roselle High (N.J.) back in the day he only had scholarship offers from UConn and Miami. There might have been one other school involved, but I'm not certain. The problem was that he was only 6'2" as a school boy senior. He grew 5 inches as a freshman in college.

As I believe I mentioned elsewhere, his cousin, Jim, was first team, all-state twice at St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City) and went to G'Town. Jim Barry who is about the same age as Rick is in The Hoya HOF.

One may think basketball skill it is in the Barry bloodlines, but Jim was adopted.

All Barry wanted was a fair shot and he felt he didn't receive one.

There is background to the remark

Rick Barry called Boomer "Phil Simms" earlier in the night and asked him about his son Gunner who is known as having Cystic Fibrosis. So Boomer then played up the Phil Simms angle where his son was arrested.

Your remark about CBS is funny. Considering the egos on Fox are just as bad if not worse.
