Tip OFF dinner last night

 Did anyone go??

Hosts were Boomer (okay) and that idiot Carton (misogynist jerk).

I heard them talk about it briefly on their WFAN show this morning, very briefly.

They did not give any insight on what kind of event it was. All they said was Lavin looks good; there are high hopes for the program and then they goofed about the Honoree Rick Barry, apparently Barry once mistook Boomer for Phil Simms, and apparently Barry had a beef with Carton for Carton even mentioning that perhaps the athletes of Barry's era couldn't keep up with the guys today..

Not much about the Johnnies at all, although they did say it was a "nice event, a nice night". I wonder what these guys get paid for this type of thing?

They may have said more about the event when I wasn't listening.

Any reports on the dinner?

Myself and my friends went.

A great time was had by all. We go every year and wouldn't miss it.

B&C were excellent co-hosts. Spent plenty of time "working the crowd" during the cocktail hour. Could not have been nicer. Carton spent about 10 minutes speaking with 2 of my friends and they said he was a really good guy and nothing like the fellow on the radio.

Both B&C took "a shot" at St. John's alumnus Francesa during the dinner.

Coach Lavin looked great. Spent time greeting everyone at every table. He is very much looking forward to the season and is very excited about his team.

Needless to say, Coach Carnesecaa, Coach Keady and all the assistant coaches were present. As was Coach Joe and his staff. Former Redmen basketall standout and SNY broadcaster Tarik Turner was also present.

Fr. Harrington and Fr. Maher were also at the cocktail hour and dinner and took the time to speak to many, many individuals about the university and the upcoming season. Both were very pro-active in going up to those that attended and initiating a conversation.

Program raised a bit of $$. Among those items at the live auction were a visit to WFAN and The B and C show. Every table took this opportunity at $1K a pop.

Also auctioned off a trip to Syracuse on the team charter.

Saw that both B and C bought silent auction items. Neither guy has "short arms"

These guys are not only generous with their time (they did this for free) but also with their wallets. Kudos to them!

Rick Barry isn't the most humble guy in the world, but he sure was interesting.

A very big fan of Coach Carnesecca. Said he was the only coach he ever had who asked his opinion.

Barry is not a big fan of Bill Bradley. Said he never should have made the U.S. Olympic team. Said he was terrible in the tryouts.

Also said that Ned Irish of the Knicks didn't draft him because he was too skinny and too much of a flake. As you know the Knicks drafted Dollar Bill, who was going to spend a year at Oxford before joining the NBA. That gave him extra motivation to play well against the Knicks and said he had some of his best games vs our home town team.

Had a great story about the Olympic trails (which is those days the final rosters were a foregone conclusion even before the practices began) and John Thompson.

Neither Barry or Thompson receive the playing time that they thought they deserved during the trials and neither was happy about it. Thompson was asked to go into a game with only a few minutes to go and sub for Mel Counts. Thompson looked down to the end of the bench and said F**K You !!!!!!

Barry said looking back it was incredibly ironic that here you had a future U.S. Olympic Coach saying FU to the 1964 coach !

Said that after the practices were over, Joe Lapchick went up to him (practices were held at Alumni Hall) and told him that he wasn't going to make the U.S. team but that he was going to be a good pro.

Barry, when asked, said he could have played today without a doubt. Said he never lifted a weight until his last year when they had a Nautillis machine. And that back in his day they thought steak was a good pre-game meal.

Said if he had himself, Wilt, Russell, Michael and Magic on the same team they would beat anyone.

Rick aslo said that someone should do a documentary on Oscar Robertson.

Said it took too long for Jamal Wikes to be admitted to the Basketball Hall of Fame, which he was last month.

At the very least he was incredibly entertaining. He also spent quite a bit of time working the crowd at the cocktail hour and could not have been nicer.

I wish was there. Sounds like a good time. I will go next year.

I take back what i said about Carton.

I know if SJU is top flight everyone in this City will jump on board!!!!!!!!

Thanks, JSJ>

Jerseyshorejohnny attended the dinner - what a surprise! One of the best St.John's supporters. Keep up the good work.
You're not going to find many better supporters of the school than JSJ. Great guy !!

thanks jersey john for gems great job
Barry was better all around than Bradley as a pro in my opinion
Did he say how old he was when cut from olympic team?
What coach did John thompson say F U too ?? Lapchick??? who was that teams hc?
nice to see boomer & carton donate their time & $$ pretty cool

JSJ,

Great job as always informing us about the event. What was the shot Boomer and Carton made about our beloved fellow alumnus Michael P. Francessa?

Also do you think Mr. Francessa will be invited to another SJU alumni event to host as an MC ever again?

Thanks,

1985

He is 69 now so you can do the math to see how old he was in 1964.

It wasn't Coach Lapchick.

ok I will do the math dont know why your being abrupt when I icomplimented your informative report jsj?
The reason I asked about Barrys age was to see if he was a fresh, soph.jr,&or sr trying out for olympic team.

I see the HC was Henry Iba{ok st.] so JT must of said FU to Iba being in charge.

'Long Beach' Larry Brown{NC} was on that team also cool.

Mea Culpa !!!

Didn't intend to be abrupt.

My apologies.

Barry also mentioned that he was a late addition to the tryouts as someone dropped out. I don't recall the name of the fellow.

I believe Rick was a senior at Miami at the time.

JSJ,

Any discussion from Coach Lavin or Chris Monasch re: the future of St. John's in the Big East Conference?

Thanks,

thanks apology accepted interesting Barry being a sr & not making that team leads me to assume he knew he was
better than Bradley & said it it at the dinner for losing out at a chance for gold medal.
Both played in nj so he must have out dueled bradley in hs also. This was Ricks chance to release his side of the story in front of bb fans that he was screwed.
Some may feel thats bitterness but a Athletes once in a life chance at gold is spoiled can haunt him 4 ever.
Ricks had like 3 sons play in nba truly amazin

While $ Bill played college ball at Princeton, he played his high school basketball in Missouri.

Rick certainly couldn't be faulted if he was somewhat bitter at the slight. Wouldn't disagree at all with your view that this has haunted him.

Again, in those days, the composition of the team was pretty much decided even before practices began. So as they say, the fix was in.

Interesting that when Rick was at Roselle High (N.J.) back in the day he only had scholarship offers from UConn and Miami. There might have been one other school involved, but I'm not certain. The problem was that he was only 6'2" as a school boy senior. He grew 5 inches as a freshman in college.

As I believe I mentioned elsewhere, his cousin, Jim, was first team, all-state twice at St. Peter's Prep (Jersey City) and went to G'Town. Jim Barry who is about the same age as Rick is in The Hoya HOF.

One may think basketball skill it is in the Barry bloodlines, but Jim was adopted.

All Barry wanted was a fair shot and he felt he didn't receive one.

Hello 85!

Chris didn't speak in front of the group.

Steve telescoped his remarks to the team and the upcoming season.

That said, and I'm not breaking any new ground here by any stretch (I'm stating the obvious for that matter), I think most of those who attended the function thought that the big loss to the conf. is Syracuse not Pitt or ND.

Nothing we can do about it now. Still fully expect that we will play the Orange once a year going forward.

As an aside, noticed that 3 BE, or soon to be, teams (Louisville, Memphis and Marquette) are off to good starts in the recruiting wars this year thus far.

Maybe Bradley was picked over Barry because Barry was always perceived to have an abrasive attitude or personality and bradley was perceived as a better team player. Situation compares to Bobby Knight cutting charles barkley from Olympic team in favor of lesser talented players. And Diehardjohnny if you meant you think Barry was better than Bradley at the time of the tryouts that is one thing but career wise they were not even in the same stratosphere, Barry was a superstar and Bradley was pedestrian in comparison (and I always liked Dollar Bill).

For those who weren't around back then, Barry was coming off a Junior year at Miami were he scored 32.2 pts a game, and pulled down 16.4 rebounds. Shot 55% from the field, and his usual 85% from the line. Dollar Bill was coming off a year of 22.2 pts 12.4 rebs, 52% and 85%.....

FWIW, Ricks last son, Canyon, is redshirting as a frosh this year at College of Charleston - 3rd Barry brother to play for Bobby Cremins. 6'6 180. He actually has a BETTER bloodline than half-brothers Brent, Jon, Drew and Scooter. HIS mom, Ricks 2nd wife, is Lynn Norenberg, an all american at William and Mary in basketball & Track - a W&M hall of famer, and the only woman (any sport) to have her number retired by the school (18.8 pts, 62%FG for her career, and a 3 time academic All American)...
