Tiny Morton Continues to Stock Seton Hall

Like what the hall is doing. At least they are getting 2014 recruits

Yep.... By hiring coaches of their recruits. Building a foundation with a house of cards.

Besides, one of 'em is going to have eligibility issues (Delgado); another, who could get better, but I'm not particularly a fan of his game (Carrington); and, the other is a player (Whitehead).

I'm not familiar of the Rodriguez kid, so I can't speak one way or another about his game.

In the end, if they are a good team, then it's good for the conference. But I'm not sure they'll get out of the conference basement in the next season or two.

I don't think we really need 2014 recruits. We are returning our entire starting lineup, we are losing two forwards but are gaining one in Jones so I don't see the need for 2014 recruits. I personally like the fact that Lavin is locked in on the team and what we are doing this season instead of going after 2014 recruits.

A collection of NYC AAU ballers won't make noise on a national level. Maybe in their 3rd year but by then IW will more than likely already be gone.

I honestly don't think any coach in the BE fears these moves.

As a fan, I sure don't.

Sina is a very nice player. I was really impressed with what I saw in the Eastern Washington game. I think Carrington is a great grab for them as well and Whitehead is a stud, but they lose one of the best players in the conference after this season, in Edwin. They also lose Oliver and their big man, Teague, but they do return Gibbs--who is a solid, solid player.

It seems all of their best payers play the same position. Sina is a point, Gibbs is a combo, Whitehead is a combo, etc. I guess they will be rolling out 3-4 guards all game long.

Since when are coaching and recruiting mutually exclusive objectives Jack?
I think you're looking at a best case scenario, and a few things would concern me, and it's dangerous to assume that will occur.

1) First and foremost we would be very thin at Center if Sanchez and Gift leave and aren't replaced. We would be an Obekpa injury or foul trouble away from disaster.
2) The sheer numbers aren't great. Sanchez, Gift, and Marco are 3 players... why go into a potentially big season without a full round of ammunition? Collectively, their minutes add up.
3) Jordan. (and this should easily be #1 in importance - but I guess we'll know more come Saturday)
4) Ignoring whether or not they should, there's no guarantee that Jakarr or Chris O don't leave to go pro.

I think next year could be a special season, and I understand why it's a tough year for recruiting; coach has his eyes on a very talented '15 class, and at the moment at least he can't really offer any playing time assurances. That's going to make recruiting difficult. But the assumption that everyone will be back, and that we won't miss the departing 3, is a dangerous assumption.
Also, if we were to sign just one player this year, that would mean 2 years from now we could be back to being very freshmen heavy.

Hey Jack,

It depends on how you defying the word "need".

You are correct that St.John's does not need additional players to put a decent team on the court but you are wrong if you think that Lavin has not attempted to improve the team with additional talent, or that many/ most of the below listed players would not have strengthened the StJohn's team.

Lavin has picked up just 1 commitment (Rysheed Jordan) during the past 2 recruiting cycles.

According to Rivals StJohn's made offers to 14 players this 2014 cycle ((i) Okonoboh/UNLV, (ii) Munflry / SMU, (iii). Terrell/ LKl State, (iv) Whitehead/ Seton Hall, (v) DelaRosa/ undecided, (vi) Williams/ Rutgers, (vii) Carrington/ Seton Hall, (viii) McCullough/ Syracuse, (ix) Cartwright/ Arizona, (x) Larrier/ VCU, (xi) Dastrum/ BYU, (xii) Chukwu/ Providence, (xiii) Jackson/ GaTeck, and (xiv) Cunningham/ undecided.

During the 2013 recruiting it is reported that Lavin made 8 offers and received just one commitment (i) Jordan/ StJ's, (ii) Anya/ NCState, (iii) Lawrence/ Cincinnati, (iv) Facey/ Yukon, (v) Young/ Pitt$, (vi) Washington/not reported/ nonn qualifier?, and (vi) Galan/ Junior college).

No doubt this post will cause a number of posters to promptly point to the excellent job that Lavin did with his first 2 classes but the reality is he is something like 1 for 22 over the past 2 cycles. Please don't attempt to tell me, as a poster recently explained in a telephone conversation that St.John's "did not need McCullough, because he would not have played at StJohn's". Please also don'tt tell me that Lavin really did not want Chukwu, Terrell, Larrier or others. Thanks.

Agree Otis We want very good recruits whenever we can get them Coach has not bagged any Got jumped on prior when I suggested our recruiting has not been great. Your 1-22 speaks for itself

SJU has had only 4 scholarships to give over the past 2 cycles.
Last year they had only the Jordan opening,
I wouldn't care how many offers Lavin made last year, he got the only player he really wanted.
This year he has offered 14, 13 of which have committed elsewhere.
1 of those 14 was coming until his coach was offered a package.
A 2nd is highly likely to commit to SJU.
Would you prefer a coaching change?

I think coach is an excellent recruiter, but when you can't offer at least 6th-man type minutes... it's going to be hard to land top tier recruits. There are simply too many other programs that are comparable enough that if we're not able to offer any playing time, and school X can offer 15mins... then that's going to tilt the equation for most kids.

Not to mention, I hope he (Otis) didn't believe every, single offer were serious inquiries. Quite a few of 'em were (serious inquiries), but certainly not all of 'em.

@usguard: There are a handful of things, in which you may can chastise Lavin. But recruiting is one of the last things, if it all, where one should be constantly harping on.

You're only "jumped on" because you continue to regurgitate the same stuff, in regards to recruiting, and continue to take aim at--what many consider--the wrong basket.

I could be wrong but I don't believe we offered Carrington.

I don't think we had been recruiting Jackson-Cartwright nor Tadric Jackson for quite some time either. Whether there was still an offer or not, I have no idea?

In addition to Rivals, Fox Sports Scout.com also indicates that St.John's offered Mr.Carrington.

Fox Sports Scout.com matches information presented by Rivals that St. John's offered Jackson- Cartwright.

St. John's backed off Carrington.

They also backed off Parker-Cartwright, but I believe that had more to do with his interest, or lack of, with the Johnnies. I know we were in decent shape with him at one point.
