Timeout Management Thread

As a disclaimer, I am not an anti-Lavin guy, I do not want him gone, I like him and think he is working hard and fully committed to the team and school. However, I have to question, from an objective standpoint, his timeout usage. What in the hell is up with this? We had 0 timeouts last night from about the 8 minute mark or so forward. Granted we still won the game, and there were nice coaching strategies (i.e. double team Christmas on defense), what gives with coach's timeouts? It is a reoccurring theme, was not just last night.

I know Harrison was trapped on that last TO, but you've just got to take the turnover there, IMO. I had no problem with using 3 first half timeouts. Every time he used one, it came after Cuse got consecutive buckets. On the road, in a hostile environment, I think he was trying to nip Syracuse runs in the bud, and it worked.

The coach who has to answer for his TO usage yesterday was Boeheim. When we called our last with around 7 minutes to go, he had 3 left. You then can't use your allotment with 2 minutes still to go. Why give us the chance to rest, and set something up?

Generally though, the only coach who I thought ever used his timeouts properly was Dean Smith. I've had an issue with the way just about every other coach uses them.

Fair enough. There was also a point in the Niagara, game in which we just scored a really quick fast break bucket, like really quick down the court, and BAM timeout. 20 secs or so later was the TV timeout. I understand it may be his philosophy, but what's the rationale?

I can't speak to his rationale, but I thought the use of the last time out yesterday was a good one. Felt like the game might be getting away from us, and keeping that possession and taking a moment to calm everyone down seemed the right move to me.

He used his timeouts and we won the game, what is the problem ?????

In this particular instance it did not become a problem. It very well could have and has certainly been a problem in the past. I'm sure some people overlook it or may have not a clue as to what I'm talking about, but it would be nice to know the rationale behind the timeout philosophy.

Do you ever wonder what life would be like if you'd had enough oxygen at birth??

My life is wonderful. I am 66 years old, enjoying retirement, my family, traveling, and watching this years St Johns basketball team. What I did not enjoy was reading the negative comments of some posters in the Syracuse game thread as soon as we lost the lead. It was as if some posters were sitting there waiting for something to go wrong so they could release their venom. As soon as we gave up the lead, y'all were on it, smh. While I was discouraged, I was too busy rooting for for us to get a stop and get the lead back to even consider going to my computer or phone, lmao. That is how real St Johns fans conduct themselves.
At the present time, we are 6-1, with a chance to be ranked. CBS Sports has us in the Top 25+1. This can only help us in our recruiting efforts. I am happy with where we are today and will continue to root hard for my school's team.
If you or any other posters are not satisfied with our current record and wins over Minnesota and Syracuse, you really need to do some introspection to find out the source your unhappiness. Myself, I am going to continue to enjoy my wonderful life.

At the game behind bench The players stepped up and proud of how they regained their composure afte Jordan's hard foul. Not a big Lavin fan he let seniors take charge . Timeout management got away with one, lucky but sometimes better to be lucky than good. Nice to stick it SU. We Are !

It's nice to hear that you're doing well Panther, but don't assume that anyone isn't satisfied with our current record or our two nice wins. For one, I'm thrilled about both situations, and secondly, I wasn't on the boards during the game - so your comments about what went on during a downturn in the game don't apply to me. Again, I'm thrilled that we won.

What I don't understand is why you have a problem with a poster starting a thread about our coach's use of timeouts. Sure, we won. But it is a head-scratcher the way he uses timeouts sometimes. And the next time he does it, it might cost us an extra possession or ultimately a game we need to win. Seems like a pretty run of the mill conversation for fans of a basketball team....

There is so many timeouts in a game that most of the time it makes no sense saving them. There were still 3 Syracuse timeouts and a tv timeout left. Add to that official reviews and free throws and other stoppages I think most of the time coaches probably have more time then they know what to tell tell players. But it still is nice to have one in the back pocket if you need it, or just get Jordan too commit a hard foul which works like a timeout

So Syracuse had 3 TOs remaining. What were they going to lend us one? :)

Doctor to parents: Congratulations you are the proud parents of a healthy baby boy! However, I botched the circumcision and you are now the proud parents of a healthy baby girl! Parents: OMG!!!!!! Doctor: What's the problem?

That's fair but can you call into question one of the timeouts used that you found to be a head-scratcher? I was at the game and the collective team was able to keep the crowd out of it by timely shots along with timely timeouts.

Side note: The Syracuse fans are a bunch of dbags (mainly the college/20 somethings). Its one thing to ride me about having an SJU shirt on, another to drop the f bombs when I am sitting there with my 8 yo son. The win was the best bday gift I could have gotten!

You should've just posted this initially. Instead of making some rude comment about someone's intelligence

C'mon, is this kind of stuff necessary? Disagree with his point but this crap has no place here.

New York fans in general seem to be plagued with coaches with poor time management skills

The initial post was not required as we all know at least one timeout should have been saved by the coach but in the end we won a key game on the road, and that is all that really counts.
However , 90percent of the fan base has serious concerns and wishes to discuss same and it is just too bad that we can't enjoy the win and forget about what went wrong , or was not perfect yesterday. But I guess that is the nature of sports and being a Monday-morning quarterback.
Let's all try to have a little more respect for one another and perhaps if we don't like a post or disagree with it just ignore and skip on to the next one. I can guarantee it will make this board far more pleasant to read and in my case and that of the other mods to moderate.

well look at it this way. was there a point after we had no timeouts where you said well damn we need to take a timeout now and goddam we don't have one ?

To me there wasn't so then there was no clock mismanagement
