I'm not talking about the play on the court, but the banter on the board. The team stunk up the joint against Georgetown, and blew about 4 games they had a chance to win. They will be an abomination a few more times this season, and maybe next as well. We are all frustrated, which leads to venting. I fully expect posts calling for Lavin's resignation to star popping up if, I mean when, the losing continues. Yes, this is one ugly team to watch.
What is insane are posters giving up on the program. Claiming they will never watch this bunch of over hyped, under performing recruits again. Promising to throw their season tickets in the East River. First off, I don't believe any of it. But, if it is true, where is your loyalty to the program? How many of us sat in Shea Stadium from 1964 through 1966, rooting for Ron Hunt to stick his shoulder out just a little to yet again be hit by a pitch. I know I did. Then Seaver came in 1967 I believe, and Koosman in 1968, and suddenly things were looking up. It sure made 1969 feel even more special, knowing we were there for the hard times, too. How many of us froze our behinds off when the Jets moved into Shea, watching more ineptness. I sat through one December game and ordered a hot chocolate. The temp was about 8 degrees, with the swirling winds at Shea bringing the wind chill well below zero. The fans passed the hot chocolate down the aisle, seat to seat. I was at the end of the aisle. When I got the hot chocolate, it was as cold as a chocolate shake. I think Namath got picked off five times that game. But did I say I am throwing away my season tickets? Well no, because I didn't have season tickets. But if I did, I would have been at the next home game, but this time with a thermos full of hot chocolate. It was nice to stick with the team through the 1968-69 season, wasn't it?
The point is, you are either a fan or not. If the product sucks, you root like crazy and hope for better next year. Yes, you can bitch and moan, because that's what fans do. And you hold onto your season tickets, or regret it when Coach Lavin gets that one player who turns it all around. It will happen, and it could be a year or two away.
