Tim Welsh Calls Out St. John's Fans

MCPNA, what decades are you talking about? We are in 2012, only 1 decade since the 90s. I didn't question crowd support during the Elite 8 runs or during any of the winning seasons we had in the 90s. I questioned you saying we've been a losing program for decades. 3 bad years under Brian Mahoney (his first year was great) in the 90s doesn't qualify as the entire decade of the 90s. The last 10 years is one thing, but decades? No one would argue that the last 10 years have been lousy but that's not decades which would suggest 20 or 30 years.

Brian Mahoney 56-58
Mike Jarvis 68-60
Norm Roberts 81-101

Record from 1992-Lavin is 205-219. That is two decades of poor basketball with a less than .500 winning percentage and a few decent seasons sprinkled in. Two decades of being a losing program overall. It's not only the last 10 years.

MCPNA, don't forget that there were some great years between Fran Fraschilla's last team & Jarvis' first 5 years. Overall records of an individual coach is one thing but I would die to have the program that we had in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002 & even the 2003 season for that matter since it culminated with a championship. To me, winning 20 plus games, going to the NCAAs, winning & playing in BIg East Championship games were not lousy seasons. Yes, we all hate how the Jarvis era ended and the overall Norm era but lets not disregard some great years that we had during that time span.

Actually. You're right.. My numbers are off because I forgot to put Franny in there. Even with Fran factored in, we have a losing record. Fact remains we have not been good for the large majority of years over the last 2 decades. That's a long, long time... Good programs don't cherry pick a few years out of decades worth of play. One or two Final 8 runs in several decades is not cutting it. NIT championships are worth zero and make you the 65th best team. The numbers don't lie, and we are a losing program for the last 20 years.

The notion set out by many in this and other threads as to why Syracuse (and others) outdraw us in their home arenas and sometimes outnumber us in our own is correct: it comes down to winning. Pro, college, high school, the teams that draw are the teams that win. I agree with all in that I am unconcerned that when we start winning consistently the Garden will be ours every night (even last year it started to become palpable against Duke, UConn, and Pitt). This is not a St. John's specific issue; it's a general truth about sports attendance.

That said, I will further what others have alluded to in this thread regarding Saturday. Forget the big picture of when our attendance will be consistently sustainable and for what reasons. These kids deserve better than for 33rd St. to be Carrier Dome South on Saturday. They chose to come here when nobody close to their talent level out of high school had in a decade. They sucked it up when they lost 3 teammates to ineligibility and it was clear they were going to be playing with a skeleton roster for the whole season. They kept playing when the learning curve produced a bunch of November/December losses. They didn't mail it in when they lost their starting point guard futher shortening the roster. And now, after absorbing all of this less than 6 months into their college careers, they are fighting like crazy to win games, down double digits in the 1st half, on the freaking road, against Big East and national competition in back to back games. It boggles the mind how hard they are able to play in the last 5 minutes despite getting 3+ guys playing 38 minutes a night.

They may not produce the results last year's team did, and that may be especially true on Saturday. But they are every bit as deserving of feeling the same energy of a home crowd that last year's team did, especially on Saturday. This particular group is entitled to that before they win enough to bring in the casual fans necessary to consistently fill the arena. They've done enough already.

MCPNA you are right if you are simply stating what our overall record has been during the last 20 years. It sounded to me initially that you were suggesting we hadn't had any winning seasons in decades until last year. I don't disagree with you that the last 20 years have not resulted in an overall winning record. When I think of decades though I usually think of more than just a twenty year stretch which is only 1 decade added on to 10 years in order to use the word in a plural sense. Then again, after what we went thru the last 10 years before last season, I could see why it seems like its been 50 years lol.

The game is sold out.

Expect to see lots of orange.

There is no excuse for St. John's students not buying tickets to this game weeks ago.

Personally I'm sick of being patient.

Where's the school spirit and fan support for a team which has the most talented group of freshmen ever to arrive on the St. John's campus.

Everyone knew about their arrival months ago.

Timmy is right to call out the St. John's fan base.

Amen JSJ. I'm tired of saying this but it's true. Unfortunately the tickets are already sold and we'll have to put up with a lot of Orange fans again.

Thank you kred.

Last night Tarik Turner said that the Syracuse game was an opportunity for St. John's to take back the Garden and make a statement of their own.

Same holds true for St. John's fans.

Not sure if anyone was watching the Big East post game show on SNY but Tim Welsh basically challenged the St. John's fans to come out for the Syracuse game. He said there is always a lot of orange in the Garden but not enough red. It seemed as if he almost wants St. John's to win this Saturday.

Welsh was clearly aiming his remarks at Moose.

Speaking of the post game show, I though Turic Turner did a nice job. He seemed prepared, knowlegable and spoke well in his new role. Good showing for StJ. Hope they keep using him.

Tarik is leaps and bounds better in this desk role than calling a game. It really is a nice niche he has right now. Calling a game just was never his thing.

Since Louie retired they became the Deadstorm. Lou kept us in NCAA consistantly making himself a HoFer
I agree celebrating a final4 in 1985 like we won it all is a joke.
Losing to GT 3x was in 85 was bs bec. jax should have played over moses.
St.J's has over rated its history with No NCAA championship rings in mens BB OVER 100ys
\\
Maybe Harkless stays 2 mores yrs & brings home a trophy for NYC

St. John's ancient history includes NIT Championships when that was VERY big, and mythical national honors if not outright national championships.

Recent history--- not so much. Nice runs here and there, but the real heady glory days were before any of us were born.

Let's bring the trophy home in the modern era.

Uconn got to do it, 'Cuse got to do it. Let us do it.
