The "What If" Question

I'm not going to knock Jakarr or Sanchez.

Seemed like neither of them nor anyone for what it mattered knew their roles last year. They got minutes because they were the best players.

Just hoping the guys this year realize that team success will only help heip their individual success.

If they buy in, they will go out as winners. Isn't that what they signed up for?

Of course, I think both Marillac and I would believe this is a theoretical discussion, and impossible to prove wrong or right. We are playing better offensively, moving the both crisply, and our defense is much improved. But more than anything we are closing out games, a major problem last year. I think we will both be happy to take this argument all the way through several rounds of the NCAA tournament

It is the job of the coaching staff to figure out what people's roles are and make sure the players are towing the line. That's why they get the big bucks. This year, with a rotation of 6 players, it's obviously less challenging to figure out who should be doing what. The flip side of that coin is that we are one injury away from disaster.

This revisionist history doesn't accomplish anything.

And there are hundreds of teams around the nation that can't survive a major injury.

Few of you know this, but last summer in attempt to boost the coffers for the Athletic Dept, the Men's Basketball Team planned to go on tour with a musical. Monasch insisted on the The Wiz.

Lavin (the Wizard) had cast Sanchez as the Cowardly Lion, Sampson as the Scarecrow and Hooper as the Tin Man. Unfortunately all three left campus early and the musical was scrapped.

So if Sampson and Sanchez were the key roadblocks to a successful season last year, why were they given so many minutes to wreak their havoc?

I think some are being a bit harsh on those two...I don't think roles were communicated (or they were the incorrect roles)...at the beginning of the season, there were things that Sanchez showed that led me believe that we could run offinse thru him ala point forward or use him like Brownlee

The consensus so far is that it's addition by subtraction. Not 1 opinion that we would be a top 10 team if Sampson was still here? I know I would have liked a starting 5 of Obekpa, Harkless, Dom(this year's version) Jordan and D Lo. Sampson, Greene and branch off the bench.

On paper that would have been a strong contender for the Final Four. Just goes to show you how hard it is to get to the Final Four.

That's because we aren't a top ten team with or without Sampson. Personally, I'd love to have a forward (or any single player) who is a deadeye shooter 15 feet and in, who shoots 50% from the field, and has monster athleticism. Just like many of you suddenly think Lavin has improved as a coach, you are ready to trash last years starters as the blame. For my part, I'd classify last years team (including those here now) as the gang that couldn't shoot straight in the last 5 minutes of a game. For all this enthusiasm, which I am in favor of, exactly who have we beaten for us to be assured that we are a top 15 team without question? Minnesota and a diminished Syracuse team. Not to knock either of them, but for all the dumping on Sampson and Sanchez, talk to me when we've accumulated a bunch of away from home victories against Big East competition. When that happens we will truly be on the road to solidifying an NCAA berth. Splitting home and homes in the BE conference won't get us there.

What if Thomas didn't leave the team this year, would Sir Dom be getting the same minutes? Or even operating on the high post. Probably not.
