When this thread was started on February 9th. Each team had played 11 conference games. There was a five way tie for third through seventh with a record of 5 and 6. The question on February 9th was who if anybody was going to emerge as the third tournament worthy Big East team to join Marquette and Villanova.
In the 25 days that have followed each team has played six of their final seven conference games and it seems that the answer is as muddled today as it was back then. There still is a five way tie for third through seventh with those five teams having a losing record of 8 and 9. No Big East team has established themselves as a legitimate third tournament team and both Marquette and Villanova have been up and down. The hottest team in the conference has definitely been Xavier who has gone 5 and 1 over the last 25 days. Creighton has gone 4 and 2 but no one else has played above five hundred in that stretch.
We will need to beat Xavier to get some sort of separation from the mediocrity and inconsistency that has defined most of the conference teams this year. Barring that I think we will need to go on a run in the Big East conference tournament to get us in to the NCAA field or at least the one that exists beyond the Tuesday/Wednesday play-in games.
How this all plays out is anyone's guess, but everytime these teams play the prognosticator's assessments seem as reliable as the spin of the roulette wheel
