The Sim Issue

The one thing I would like to see him do is tighten up the handle.
+100. Sims shot will come around as his form is perfect and imho his defense has improved greatly since last year and the start of this year.
He really needs to work on his handle which is still very suspect. Something to
work on like crazy in the offseason.

IMHO Simeon will be just fine. He has the tools. Think from a shooting standpoint it's mental, he presses too much. And agree with Marillac that from a defensive standpoint he just needs another year of body development.
I was thinking the same. He seems to be a great kid but appears to over think things at times. You can see the tools are there. But as pointed out in this thread, the college game has become so skewed towards older kids and we often take for granted seeing kids like this develop who aren't immediate stars.

For me personally this portal, NIL, extended eligibility era really is tough for high school kids and too often deprives fans the enjoyment of seeing them develop. Oh well, “adapt or perish” I guess.

“That kid is going to be something & only a freshman” has been replaced by “That 25 year old guy will kick ass & can bring his kids to games free” 😇

This gen of college players also got whacked as underclassmen by the Covid 5th year rule. I don't have a problem if NIL is keeping players in school for 4 years instead of 1-3. I do not like that some kids are on their 4th school, and I hope they can find a fix for that.

More than ever as fans we will have to deal for now with one year rosters that can have 80% turnover year over year. Having a kid for 2 or more years seems like the exception and not the rule.

With all the frosh big $$ flameouts, can unserstand why Rick likes quantifiable talent in favor of overpaying freshmen.

i like seeing the numbers you nerds bring here- and certainly appreciate them... but I'm more of an "eye" test guy...

Last year... I did not feel comfortable whenever Sim was on the floor... and the last impression we had was the BET vs Hall... we won handily, but Sim looked shook...

Fast forward a year... the way i see him playing- light years from where he was as a Frosh... his shot is "pretty" - not falling- but confident it will. His Defensive instincts have been on display late the last couple games. He exudes confidence- i want him to shoot MORE.

I am all in on Sim staying and his continuing to play a big role this year.

Agree. His handle is still too loose to give him any real time at PG but everything else passes that eye test you talk about.

Agree with the overall observations that his defense has been impressive while his offense has been inconsistent. There have been games where he’s been extremely efficient & you see his offensive potential but it’s too often followed by a game where he shoots 1-9 with 4 turnovers or something like that.

Think his development as a lead guard was a bit sidetracked by the additions of Kadary & Smith. Nobody to blame for that…adding that level of talent is a good thing just saying next season may be the one where we see him sink or swim as the true “lead guard.”

This season despite the inconsistencies he’s been indispensable on defense and at times timely on offense. Especially as the depth has been stretched as thin as possible with Dunlap’s injury and Smith being in & out at times. Love his energy & just a hunch he may be equally if not more important for the locker room as he is on the court.

Sim’s Stats - The way I look at it is he has improved his productivity, was never really a PG, but headed in right direction as combo guard. I think we got caught up on him getting that UNC offer, where I don’t think he would have played 25 minutes/gym like here. I think if he gets stronger and works hard this off season, he will be a good player for us and perhaps a “very good” one if here in his senior year. That seems a positive. In the meantime, I think we may have to live with his “flashes” of brilliance w dunks, steals, but also his inconsistent shooting. (but some very timely baskets) He is our only third guard option, a sophomore and on several levels a work in progress. I am just trying to be grounded about him. I’m glad we have him and like his potential to be a solid player, not a super star.

I’d say 5x a game Sim’s lack of strength becomes an issue.

His defense is improving…he hassles his man all game. The rotations can be better but he’s young.

I don’t care how many he misses, I love his shot. I just wish we got him looks he could step into more often.

This stretch without Deivon has forced him to come to the forefront offensively.

I think his defense is night-and-day better than last year, especially on-ball activity. Also much better at driving in the paint and in transition. Last year he could hit an open jump shot b/c he has a beautiful stroke, and as the year progressed had a few games where he was really effective off drop coverage in the PNR because he loves that mid-range (and can knock it down).

He's definitely made a big leap. And with Pitino I'd bet on him making another one next year. With some increased strength, I think he can be a big time upperclassmen.
