The Olympics

Just as a reminder, this past February:

At that point St. John's was ranked #12 and UConn #19. Could you imagine this season if we're both top 10?

Well, they're playing on the same Friday this year, but it's also the opening ceremonies for the Winter Olympics, so I don't expect the ratings to be as good, regardless of where these teams stand.

Good find, too bad viewership will be affected for the two biggest BE games this year (St. John's @ UConn on Peacock).

I'll take the over on that.

No one cares about the winter Olympics except for figure skating and hockey, and no self respecting sports fan is going to watch a bunch of speed skaters and snowboarders march into a stadium rather than watch two top 5 teams in a blood war at MSG. The ratings will be huge.

There are more Olympics fans, then there are general sports fans.

The Summer Games last year did their best ratings ever, and the Winter games usually do better than the Summer games.

Personally, I couldn’t care less about the ratings for either the game or the Olympics but I know what I’ll be watching.
One’s exciting and in my wheelhouse, the other a snooze fest, summer or winter. But strictly my opinion.

The Opening Ceremony will be aired the same time as our game (8 PM). TV ratings for the Winter games have fallen dramatically, but the 2022 Opening Ceremony still drew 16 million viewers. That's a massive number and will definitely take away some viewers. If we're both Top 5 I think it's still possible we'll surpass last year's number, but will be a lot more difficult.

Its not even close, the Summer Olympics blows the winter out of the water. And the number of people who watch the Opening Ceremonies has almost nothing to do with how many people will watch the game because there's very little crossover there between potential viewers of the game.

This would be like saying "well, Dancing With The Stars is on at the same time as the game, they pull huge numbers, you're going to lose viewers". It's two different buckets of people. Whatever number of suburban housewives are pulled away from the game-if they were ever going to watch it in the first place- will be more than offset by the generic sports fan dudes who are grateful there's counter-programming on.

True for some viewers, but there still will absolutely be some people missing our game for the Opening Ceremony, my dad for instance likely being one of them. He's not an alumni so he's not a major Johnnies fan (only follows them since I went there), but he always watches the Opening Ceremony with my mom. 16 million viewers (2022 Winter Opening Ceremony) is still 10X what our game drew last year, it's declining but still a big deal. The Opening Ceremony also draws a lot more viewers than the actual Olympic games.

The good news is we're the only Top 25 game that day, so ratings should still be pretty strong regardless.

Some will watch but I'm going to bet that if both teams are highly ranked they will draw more than last year

There are winter olympic fans and there are basketball fans and your dad is the exception to the Norm

I love the Winter Olympics and have been to one and never watch the ceremonies other than glancingly. If we are both ranked high ratings will be through the roof IMO

The Summer Olympics consistently get better ratings than the Winter Olympics.

This is because the Summer Games have more events, a larger global participation rate (including from countries in tropical regions), and more globally popular sports. Recent data shows Summer Olympics drawing around 3 billion worldwide viewers, while the Winter Olympics average about 1.9 billion.
