THE NIT...

Pinkston from Villanova is from my home borough, BROOKLYN, no chance he goes to SJU??? I’d love to have him.

It is so amazing the really good kids that play on other Division 1 teams from our area, they don’t even consider SJU?

Yes Lavin needs to recruit some NY kids, especially if they want to play that video of New York before the games. It is funny in a way because I dont think one of our players comes from NY, yet the video gives the impression that they are the street wise basketball players from NY

Lavin only needs to recruit nyc kids if they are worth recruiting and he has done that.

Agree, gman. I can't believe this straw man is brought up every month (usually, by the same poster).

Just a coincidence that our last good team had four key players from NY (Barkley,Grant,Artest and Jessie)?

And 3 of them played together in AAU, no?
Kind of the same mindset in terms of recruiting package deals like Lavin has done.

The best city kid recently was Harkless and he left NYC to go prep. Thank god he came back for his 1 year at SJU. You do realize that most of these kids DON'T want to stay home, right? They grow up in NYC in less than ideal situations and go visit these sprawling campuses around the country.

I don't know whats more annoying. The Redmen to Red Storm debate or the we need a team full of NY'ers debate.

Neither is more annoying than the "bring back Dunlap" comments.

That's a good one too. But hasn't been around as long as the other two just yet.

We'd have been much better off most of the past 15 years if we had a team of Jersey kids anyway.

And if we had a bunch of Californians now we'd look like Arizona. I'll take that any day.

You're talking about something that happened nearly 20 years ago. Not to mention, Barkley, Artest, and Jessie all played on the same AAU team, as stated by Moose.

Barkley and Artest were top 10 players in their respective classes. Jessie was a top 50 player (in the class with Artest). So, you definitely go after those players when they are in your backyard.

Tell me who Lavin should go after in the Johnnies' backyard.... Give me names.

That wasn't our last good team. Our last good team had a couple of nyc born kids mixed with national players which is he right mix.

He'll be a top-rated kid when he comes outta high school. I'm not talking about those types.

I'm talking about 'diamond in the rough' types. Besides, I want Andrew to answer. Thanks, nonetheless.

LOL, Moose. I agree. The two most annoying arguments.

Rawle Alkins and Sidney Wilson would be my top two targets. I have interest in Luis Santos and Travis Aston as well.

These would be good additions to Diallo, Briscoe, Delarosa and Govan.

Okay.... The staff is already keeping tabs on Alkins. Wilson is a freshmen, and if continues to ascend, then I'm sure the staff will keep tabs on him, as well. Once again, those are kids who could be top-rated players in their respective classes. They've also kept tabs on Santos.

Not sure about Aston, as I don't really know much about him.

Otherwise, you've basically agreed with a few of us, per our stance on the staff going after NYC kids.

I think Gonzalo was a big Calhoun proponent. Lots of time for him to turn it around, I suppose . . . at Iona when UConn runs him off.

The best player on that AAU team, Elton Brand, chose to get out of NY. It's a two way street. If the kid has no interest in staying home, it's a waste of time recruiting him. It's best for some kids to get away from their hometown.

Elton Brand was not from NYC. Peekskill I believe. Regardless we will win few recruiting battles with Duke, even if a kid is intent on staying home. Coach K is the EF Hutton of college hoops.

The kid still would have to take classes with the dorks at Duke! The kid could hide for two semesters, like the one and dones at Kentucky that Ratface is now trying to recruit against but getting through 4 years at Duke is a challenge to an average student. There will always be players that will not want to deal with the academic rigors of Duke and few kids at that level come from NYC schools. That said, wasn't this thread about the NIT?

Atkins has the talent but has 2 years to get those grades up or major qualification issues is what I hear.
