THE NIT...

The NIT for many years was a starting point for a team on the rise, a young team not yet ready for the Kentuckys , L'villes, Dukes,NC,Kansas, etc to play in a tournament as a prelude to a better season the next year.

This year that team is Virginia, today winning the ACC regular season championship..

Not so for us.. We were a NIT team last year, actually lost to Virginia and are 8-8 in the new BE conference, still hoping for a at large bid. By any standards, not a good year for us.

We're not the youngest team anymore and haven't yet achieved the results our heralded players were suppose to secure. We are currently a midtier BE team that can salvage some glory by finishing with wins in the next 2 to get to 10. likely, not a NCAA team but, the jury is still out with the BE tourney looming.

Villanova,Creighton, Xavier are definitely in.. Providence, G;town and ourselves are possibles.. I think the BE gets 4 teams in, not 5.. That's the reality this week , after losses to Nova and Xavier.

Lavin will not be fired but, has the Program improved to the extent expected, with these players, who I think have reached their ceiling, except for Jordan? We still play ugly, terrible basketball for long stretches, win or lose. Often difficult to watch ..

Next year? Nova brings back most of their core players. We lose GG, Sanchez, Marco.

Some interesting thoughts to ponder as the season winds down. Hopefully, we win 2, take a shot in the BE TOURNEY and see what happens.

Realistically, it might be NIT again..

I haven't watched Virginia play this year but they are certainly benefiting from only playing duke, unc and cuse only once each. I think they have the easiest schedule in the acc this year. With that said they are winning games which is all you can ask of them.

Villanova loses just one starter this year James Bell and returns Arcidianocco, Hillard, Pinkston, and Ochefu.

Coach Wright never stops recruiting. To restock for next season Coach Wright is bringing in two 4* recruits 6'6" forward Mikal Bridges, and 6'3" guard Phil Booth for the current 2014 recruiting cycle.

Coach Wright has already reloaded for the 2015 recruiting class with two additional 4* commits, 6'8" power forward Tim Delaney and 6'4" shooting guard Donte Divincenzo.

Most Villanova fans I know do not consider StJohns to be a rival since Villanova has defeated StJohns something like 10 of the last 11 times the 2 teams have played. Not good.

They are definitely taking care of business. They also have, like you stated, benefitted by only playing the top teams in the conference only once. They've fattened up off a weak ACC.

One of my best friend's is a big, Tar Heel fan, and he feels the Tar Heels have done similar. Still gotta give 'em credit, but the ACC is weaker than the Big East, IMO.

otis, it is harsh but, many of our heretofore traditional rivals from the old BE , have beaten on us like a drum. And, even worse, the new teams, Creighton, Xavier have already beaten us 3 out of 4.

It was a nice streak to recover from 0-5 but, we're no better than a .500 team. Which to me is not what was expected . We'll need to beat Depaul and Marquette to have a slight chance with at least 2 BE VICTORIES TO GO NCAA. we had our chances against NOVA and Xavier and came up short.

Tony Bennett has them playing outstanding defense, tops in ACC. Even though Harris is their best player they pretty much spread the scoring. They never rush their offense, allowing each player to touch the ball. Nice recruiting job by their coach.

Harris was their best player last year. Brogdon and arguably Mitchell are better this year, and that honor will soon go to their soph center, Mike Tobey, from my hometown of Monroe, NY. The kid was a beast yesterday against Syracuse--5 offensive boards and 11 pts and 8 total rebounds. Just over an hour away from our campus....we could have used him.

Pinkston from Villanova is from my home borough, BROOKLYN, no chance he goes to SJU??? I’d love to have him.

It is so amazing the really good kids that play on other Division 1 teams from our area, they don’t even consider SJU?

I assume that was a Jay Wright vs. Norm recruiting battle. . .

That's like Man vs food. Food never had a chance

When has Nova ever been considered a rival though?

Well, back in the day Villanova, G'town,Uconn were among our principal rivals. Sadly, these programs for the most part have surpassed us by a wide margin over the last 15 years. Last time we beat Villanova was the Hardy team in 2010-11..Beating G'town this year broke a several year string of losses to the Hoyas.

This Program use to be something but, the last 15 years, with a NITChampionship and 1 NCAA appearance, another NIT last year to show for it. Not lately...That's our accomplishments..

Correct. He committed during Norm's last season with St. John's.

Yes Lavin needs to recruit some NY kids, especially if they want to play that video of New York before the games. It is funny in a way because I dont think one of our players comes from NY, yet the video gives the impression that they are the street wise basketball players from NY

Lavin only needs to recruit nyc kids if they are worth recruiting and he has done that.

But they now live in NY and play tough NY style basketball. There is nothing soft about these kids IMO. They are as NY as the rest of us .

Agree...should we have taken Severe over Jordan?

I don't know whats more annoying. The Redmen to Red Storm debate or the we need a team full of NY'ers debate.

Agree, gman. I can't believe this straw man is brought up every month (usually, by the same poster).
