I think at least part of the Arizona result can be attributed to them taking us lightly and not being prepared for our intensity to start the game. We caught them on their heels early and took advantage.
They made their run when they stopped turning the ball over. We were not going to have consistent offense with out Heron if we don't get live ball turnovers that create the opportunity for fast break opportunities and easy buckets. Hustle and hard work don't allow you to go toe to toe with a more skilled and athletic team in a half court setting. We have to dictate tempo AND convert the opportunities we get in order to be successful.
Also, you are going to miss "bunnies" when the other team is more athletic. Just because a shot is close to the basket does not make it an easy shot. If your runner is fading away or high off the glass to avoid a shot block the degree of difficulty goes way up even though it may only be a three foot shot. We saw that a lot with LoVett, Simon and Ponds in years past where they attempted an off balance runner and missed because they were off-balance.
Energy and 50/50 balls. We have won them all season except for one game. I didn’t expect anything different in this game. Rarely does any team come out and play their best every game. But our guys will always be the aggressor. The games we aren’t, we’ll lose. But these guys have brought their hard hats every game. They had lost 2 out of 3 before getting to us. No way they took us lightly. They wanted it. Our guys wanted it more.
I have no reason to think this will change come conference. These guys are embracing the little things now. And they are super scrappy. Dangerous team, especially if they hit shots.
