The Heart and Soul of the team

Is D'Angelo Harrison. Mo may be more talented or have more upside, but D'Angelo is the guy right now. He plays like he wants it. I like his aggressiveness on both ends of the floor. He is not afraid to take the shot or try to lead the team when slumping. His percentage is not great, but that will improve. He seems like he has a great attitude out there especially for a freshman. If and when Mo gets as aggressive as D'Angelo, that will be a powerful combo. For now, i appreciate what D is doing out there.

I AGREE ! MO needs to get hungry ! He is out of sync when we play a top tier team . He scores and rebounds but its a quiet ( 18points 12 rbs) He is So talented - They should get him pissed off before the game.Coach should walk over and tell him that the other team said your overrated . Every game they should tell him. Is Harrison the only pure shooter on this team ? Really ? Pointer ... I love his attitude , his heart and physical play . Never backs down to anyone . Greene ... I thought he is a scorer ? Well ? Cant make an open shot but He does drive to the hole against anyone .
They need to Change this offense . They should run the same offense as Louisville. Run , Run , Run , Press , Press , Press ..... Three's Three's and more Three's . The half court is so boring and they are too young to walk it up and take a shot with 5 sec to go . I understand they are running only 7 guys , but throw in the walk ons . Just run and gun with these kids . Use your bench . How can these walk on's sit there all game long with fresh legs - Enough is enough . They are a long athletic team that Lavin wants - Run them Coach . They will then go to the Foul line , create open shots - ect ........This is a no brainer ! It will build there confidence

I think the worst thing that happend to Harkless was going off for 32 points in the first BE game, as he has become a marked man since then. Both UCONN and 'Ville doubled him everytime he went inside, and with much bigger player to boot. He'll make the adjustment.

Some may recall when Mo reneged on Connecticut and committed to STJ there was a story going around that someone affiliated with UConn said he shouldn't go to STJ as he'd be double and triple teamed every time he caught the ball since there would be no talent around him to worry about. Of course that was before the balance of the great class was signed but also before 67% of the bigs in that class disappeared.

Certianly coming home to roost, but if we get another big next year (and I'm confident we will), that will change.

I have to agree , this kid is a competitor. You can tell by the look on his face when he walked off the floor at halftime last night he was embarrassed by what just happened. If he gets his shot blocked when going to the rack-- next time down he tries it again-- takes charges-- plays down low on the zone- can handle the rock--- and gotta love the set on this kid. He is a T waiting to happen, but you needs guys like this in the program. Kudos to Lavin for finding this kid down in Texas.

It's ironic but I don't think Pelle and Sampson would have made a bit of difference last night and we've already seen what Garrett has to offer. Fact is that we only have one shooter and the whole world knows about it. We also don't defend corner threes and until these things change we're going to get obliterated. Of course Harkless is going to get doubled when he goes low. That's what zones are for. He played a lot on the perimeter last night but doesn't have the cojones to shoot. From what I've seen in warmups the walkons are better shooters than some of the starters. What would be lost if we used them a little? Games? We're doing that already.

I guess I am a voice in the wilderness (not impressed with DH's shot), but my buddy and I sat close and paid attention and here were our observations of last night's game (in no particular order)...

Stith is the only reliable ball handler we have, lots of strugglers when it comes to dribbling the basketball.

We start our offense way too far out top, no chance to scare anyone when you're dribbling 40 feet away from the basket.

Louisville got away with a lot of fouling on the dribble and a lot of hand checking that they should have been called on.

Harrison has a very awkward looking push-shot, neither one of us were impressed with the form of that shot, not really a pure jump shot, nothing like Dwight Hardy's from last year.

Harkless is very talented but needs help.

God's Gift, needs to bulk up.

Defense has to recognize guys strengths and weaknesses and not let a guy who's only skill is spot up corner shooting, get open look after open look.

Too much substitution with no real purpose.

I know, I know, this is my second look at the team live, and really the first one up close, but those are observations of mine and my buddy, who has a lot of knowledge of the game.

Hi Brooklyn, funny how people at the same game can see it from different angles.
GG needs to bulk up? Moe is the one that needs to bulk; GG is chiseled!
Too much substitution? The starters played 83% of the game! LOL! We only subed with Malik and Amir.
Harkless needs help, yes. But it is hard to help a player who hangs 30 feet from the basket for half the game. He played with no aggression whatsoever! I think he had ONE FOUL! That alone shows how passive he was. He is getting valuable minutes but needs to put those minutes to better use on the offense and call for the ball. Had he enrolled at Uconn he would have been getting 10 minutes a game with his low-energy game right now.
Stith....you mentioned him......I won't.
Harrison shoots line drives...as long as they go in, who cares about the form.
Bottom line, we lost because Phil and Dom were out of their league last night, especially Phil. I could not count one good play by him last night. With Phil and Malik last night it was like playing one man down. Neither could run the point and Phil took a half-dozen bad shots when he should have found Harrison or Harkless.

.
.That is .great but with our bench and the short rotation it. will not work this yr

Yeah, having guys who are 6'9 and 6'10'' is overrated, especially against a team with a 7 footer. We are far better off playing with 6 short guys and one forward than if we had 9 guys of whom 3 were bigs. In fact, if we really want to improve we would shorten the rotation even farther and just play 5 guards 40 minutes every night. Genius!!

and we've already seen what Garrett has to offer.

You're right. They guy has played about 45 minutes so far this season after not playing for months and with about two weeks of practice. He's useless and will never contribute anything, and we can say that definitively right now.

Fact is that we only have one shooter and the whole world knows about it. We also don't defend corner threes and until these things change we're going to get obliterated.

Like the Providence game. Or do you mean we are only going to get obliterated by top-10 teams? [Disclaimer: we do need to get better in the halfcourt and extend on that corner 3.]

Of course Harkless is going to get doubled when he goes low. That's what zones are for. He played a lot on the perimeter last night but doesn't have the cojones to shoot.

He's gutless. Get rid of him. Who needs talented players? Bring back Sean Evans!!!!!!

From what I've seen in warmups the walkons are better shooters than some of the starters.

John Wooden always said he decided who was going to play in the game based on warmups. Ok, he didn't I just made that up.

What would be lost if we used them a little? Games? We're doing that already.

Yes, and we are going to lose more this season. And while we are doing that we are going to give the players who will go to the Sweet 16 next year valuable minutes in game competition against good teams so that they will learn what they need to do to compete effectively at this level.

Harrison is absolutely the heart and soul of our team. Hes savy as hell and knows how to get contact and still finish.
Hes the best on the team at getting to the basket and hes probably our best passer, unfortanatly we need him at the two because hes our best shooter. Phil cant make any passes that aren't the easy ones, and his shot has been off, he needs to get some confidence back and maybe playing him some at the 2 will help.

LMF channeling his inner fun, and in the process carving up Bobre like a Thanksgiving turkey (pun intended)!

Gift needs to bulk up? He s a physical beast.

Harrison 10th in the BEC in assist at 4.67per game and a assist to turnover ratio of 7 to 1 3rd in the BEC. Seem to me that Harrison's short comming at least to some on this board is he's not from NYC. Harkless may have all the potential in the world, but it is not about potential it is about performance.

Both have been excellent performers. Can't knock either one.

In truth, the only reason many here think Harrison is a shooter is because that was his reputation coming in. If all of us never read a high school scouting report, and just watched every game this season, we would say he has a strange release and needs work on his shot. I am holding out hope based on Coach's comments that Harrison is one of the best shooters he has ever coached. One thing for sure is D'Angelo has a ton of pride, a lot of savvy, a ton of heart, and is completely unafraid. And he doesn't mope for long when his shot isn't falling. I will give him the benefit of the doubt on his shot, especially because there is no real flow in the offense, leading to a lot of bad looks for the guy with the ball as the shot clock winds down. It's like getting caught with the hot potato, and D'Angelo is stuck with it way too often.

To the post that said Stith can dribble=yeah but he can't dish the rock and you don't get any points for dribbling. On the other hand Stith might help us in a skills competition as we could let him represent in any dribbling competition.

Stith can dribble between the circles with the best of them.
