The Garden and years stj was in final four

During the last two Garden games,  I couldnt help but notice the Garden lighting up the signs that surround the arena with the years st johns was in the sweet sixteen, elite eight and final four/
My question is this and maybe someone can clarify this for me or complain to the powers that be at the Garden
But wasnt st johns in the Final Four in 1985 and also 1951 or some yr around that when they lost to KY? If so why is it that they only list 1985

i agree. we should be celebrating players, however. some were the best in the country. others had inspirational stories to tell. btw...the "other" final four was in 1952. maybe there was no mention because the team played in the old garden on 8th and 50th back then.

I have no problem celebrating some great players like Mullin, Jackson etc. Still thugh, the biggest reason we celebrate that is because we'vd had such limited success in tournament time since the 1950's that these are our only noteworthy achievements. I want to see some real success on the court that tops one Final 4 when Miami Vice was all the rage...

If you've only been to the beach one day in your life, it's memorable. Of course there are programs that have beach houses.

In 1951, it wasn't so clear as to whether an NCAA championship eclipsed an NIT championship, and overall NCAA basketball didn't have as big a following.

Of course it's pathetic to think of SJU as a once big time program with just one visit to the Final Four in 60 years. Even Seton Hall can boast of a final, no?

Yeah, time for a change... Even if for a short while. It's why I don't blame Lavin for swinging for the fences with our recruiting classes instead of just filling ships with bodies that won't contribute. Lavin tried to bring in 10 near blue-chippers. They didn't all work, but I understood his vision all the same. So what we have one fair season this year before we make our way toward powerhouse status over next few years? I have full faith Lavin will have this team teeming with talent over the next few years. Give it time and we will be real happy. Like I said, I'm not into celebrating Final 4's almost 30 years ago. I hope he keeps swinging for the fences...

Agreed. With ten slots to fill, and starting outr with a squad that was a 6-12 Big East team the season before, what Lavin accomplished was amazing. There is no question he knew he had a few at risk recruits academically, but he had a lot of slots to fill. It's clear he isn't aiming for anything short of an elite program, and our prospects of becoming a perpetual top ten school have arguably never been better.
