The Elephant In The Room

We are all looking forward to next season. It has to be better than this. But the elephant in the room when discussing next season's roster is the lack of an elephant. We need more wide bodies, especially wide bodies that can score, rebound and defend at this level. We will at times have some combination of Ponds, Mussini. Freud, Yakwe, Sima and
Owens on the court. We will be far outweighed by our opponents. This may not be wrestling, but weight matters. Ochefu crushed us tonight. We will have to deal with the likes of Delgado and Bentil next season. Who are we bringing in to handle the teams with a power game? Look at Mussini. He is toast at this point in the season. You take a beating during the college season. We will have a finesse team. A team of skilled players. But watching what Ochefu did tonight makes me wonder if the staff will address the size issue for next season. Is anyone else seeing what I'm seeing, that this is a major concern going forward. Can anyone think of a recent successful Big East team that went so thin at almost every position? Will the amount of talent coming in more than offset the lack of strength at almost every position?

Wow I thought you tried sneaking an R&P thread in about the republican debate tonight :)

Every time Trump says: "We don't win anymore", I expect him to continue: We don't win against Villanova, we don't win against Georgetown" It seems like he is referring to the SJU basketball program.

There are at least a couple local guys eligible to transfer next season without penalty who are 235-240 lbs. I suspect we may go in that direction.

Dream baby, dream.

I wouldn't worry to much about having to deal with Delgado and Bentil next year.

We do need some men on this team.

It is hard to manufacture them in the weight room. Genetics is most of the story. Give me a few like Mel Davis and Anthony Glover.

I know it wasnt all that long ago that AG played, but PFs have gotten so much bigger that I have to wonder how guys like him, Minland, Middleton, etc would fair against today's PFs.

They don't always translate well to the hardwood
Physically, I would put CJ in their class but certainly not even close as a hoopster

When it came to rebounding, I wouldn't mention Glover and Davis in the same breath. AG averaged 5.9 rpg in his four-year career (6.7 was tops), whereas Mel averaged nearly three times as many per game (15.6) ... and in his best year nearly 10 more than AG per game (16.1).

Meanwhile Sonny Dove, who was hardly what one would call beefy (or, in this thread's case, elephantine) averaged 12.5 rpg for his three years (with 14.2 being his best).

Dove was long and athletic. Davis had a NBA body while still at Boys High. Glover walked on campus as a man. Wasn't trying to compare Mel and Glover as rebounders, but as 2 guys we had that couldn't get pushed around. I didn't miss many home games when Mel played. It's been over 40 years, and we haven't had a player like him since.

Dove was the reason we beat Michigan at the garden when they had Cassie Russell

Guys like Sima and Yawke, especially Sima, will be much stronger next year with offseason conditioning and natural growth/maturation. Look no further than how Obekpa's body transformed. A 5th year banger is a possibility, but I'm much more concerned about having guards and wings who can penetrate, make plays for others and shoot the ball.

Probably my all-time favorite win (75-74, after trailing 68-52 with 9:35 to go). Sonny (definitely my all-time favorite Johnnie) was a thin sophomore who looked like a stick next to UM's Cazzie Russell, Bill Buntin, and Oliver Darden. When they came onto the court, I remember looking at them and thinking, "Holy s--t, they look like Big 10 linemen!" Bottom line: If you're quick enough and athletic enough, you don't have to be built like Mel Davis or Anthony Glover to win the battle of the boards.

Sonny Dove was quite a Player! All American, 1st Round Draft choice..As a Soph, helped beat Villanova in Joe Lapchick's Final game to win the NIT in 1965...He was rail thin but, could hold his own and more against any level of Competition. Certainly, one of our All Time Greats!

with how the game is changing teams can be successful without heavy bigs, and I imagine if we don't get any weight we will play a style closer to the Nelly-Ball Mullin played in Oakland. However if you aren't gonna go inside and bang with the big boys you need 3 or 4 shooters that can stretch the floor, the warriors had that under Nellie and they have it again. Also if you are gonna play that way you need to defend the three and we clearly can't do that atm.
