The better juco

Without a doubt Gift at this point. But that could change once Big East play starts where he'll have to face bigger bodies. It will be interesting to see how he handles that.

Come on Tom, really?

I think your being unfairly hard on Nuri for 2 real games and 4 total games in.

Not discounting Gift who has been unreal to date but still.

Gift is tremendous. Hard to argue against it at this point. I just watched our 240lb center isolate outside the arc and take his defender off the dribble tonight. He's a ton better than I ever anticipated. I can't imagine how we'd do with Pelle and Gathers. Nuri is very good and will get a lot better, but GG is the best player on the team right now and I don't think it's close.

God's Gift is wonderful but I think that Lindsey is wonderful too. I have been at all four games and these two players have been the ones that have far exceeded my expectations thus far. I can not remember any JUCO transfers as immediately as impressive since Marcus Hatten came here.

While Lindsey has not been a good outside or free throw shooter thus far, I love everything else about his game. He has shown a terrific handle and a great ability to get to the hoop and score. He also breaks down opponents off the dribble, sees the floor really well, raises his game when the money is on the line, doesn't panic and is a team leader.

God's Gift is a combination of unbelievable speed, quickness, strength, athleticism, maturity and smarts. He seems like he has been playing this game for many years even though I know this is not the case.

I think the two JUCOs will anchor us and we will be very competitive despite our overall lack of depth, experience and size. My optimism flows through them.

Tom just come out and say you dislike Nuri.. Give the kid a chance before you knock him in his first two D1 games..

I think GG will be our MVP this year. Think about it, who is the one player we cannot afford to lose? Without GG, we have no size whatsoever. He is our best player so far without question.

Makes you wonder, was last year just an exceptional year for Juco talent - or are there more diamonds hiding out there this season?

Haven't heard a word about the staff beating the Juco bushes for talent in 2012. But given how good these two kis are playing (Gifts averaging 19.5 on 71% shooting, and Nuri 17 a game on 62% shooting), sure seems like it would be worthwhile looking for another one.

My UCLA Bruins starting PG Lazeric Jones came from JC last year. And Arizona's starting PF last year and this year is also a JC - in fact, he and Lazeric were teammates at JC.

IN this day of your best playes staying only 1 or 2 years, JC makes sense - you still only get them for 2 years, but you get them with 2 additional years of maturity and experience.

Anyone know of a website that reports on JC talent?

I think you could make a strong case for either guy but regardless in my opinion they are our best 2 players. Harkless obviously has the most talent and in the coming months he will surge but for now his shot selection must improve

 Is Juco Junction still around.

Barely and you need separate Rivals subscription I think.

Brad Winton runs a good site but the exact URL escapes me right now.

I love them both....lets keep in perspective that nuri played only 1 year of jc after not picking up a ball for two years...gg is awesome and more polished however watch out for nuri under this coaching staff...totally unfair to even compare the two right now

Have not seen Nurideen shoot one jumper yet besides that 3 last night.
Can he shoot?

Nurideen's shooting has been suspect since last year in JC. Most of his points come off drives to the basket that inflate his shooting % a d his form on the foul line indicates he has poor rotation on his shots. These are technical flaws that can be worked on but as of now Hardy had a much better touch from the outside. As for Kyle Anderson, he is not a pure PG but a point forward and is a great passer but the college game is much faster than high school ball so comparing Nurideen's game and Kyle is irrelevant. Nurideen has a great motor and will only get better with experience and coaching------something he has lacked now for THREE YEARS!

God's Gift is the best player on the team right now and is a man amongst boys. Thank God we did not rely on Moose's scouting report last year! LOL! Just kidding Moose!

A typically mindless redmen dot com thread. Who is "better," the point guard or the center. Better at what he mused? Well, Gift is better at being a center, and he's certainly better at manhandling the pasty faced D2 frankensteins he's faced so far. So he's definitely better at being big, and better at being a big man. Of course, come January when his back is to the basket and Fab Melo is between him and it and Rakeem Xmas is sliding over to double him I suspect he will not look quite so accomplished, or better. He might even look smaller, and worse, that is if he manages not to foul out during the pregame warm ups. Although even if he does he'll still be a better center than Lindsey.

Lindsey OTOH is a better guard than Gift. He dribbles better. He passes better. He gets to the basket better. He scores better and in more interesting ways and in ways that don't depend entirely on overwhelming his opponents physically. Come January, when all there is between him and the basket is Scoop Jardine, he'll still score and maybe even score better. Perhaps by then he won't be the overwhelming disappointment he was in the exhibition season, and maybe he'll even better than GG, but not at being a center, unless things fall apart and the center cannot hold the entry pass and anarachy is loosed upon the world.

Who is better. I don't know. I do know that the best - that would be everyone who did not reply - lack all conviction and the worst are full of passionate intensity, and that this has been a lively lively thread.

Anyway, here's some things I've been wondering about, let me throw them out there for you all to chew over:

Which is better:

Ludwig Wittgenstein or Coco Puffs?

Rhubard Pie or Radial Tires?

The Big Bang Theory or Shingles?

Sarcasm or litotis?*

Discuss.

* this may be a trick question

Not sure about either of them.

Nuri has a decent handle and some nice moves to the hoop. He has good anticipation on defense. However, he is not as fast as players like Showtime or Marcus Hatten, and I think his mental grasp of the game and ability to see what is going to happen before it happens makes him look faster and more athletic than he really is. Frankly I think Phil Greene is faster, has a better handle, is likely a better shooter, and will eventually get to the hoop just as effectively (if with less flash). Phil just needs some more seasoning, which Nuri has in spades and that is what helps him succeed. He has shown no jump shot and has shown he cannot hit free throws. He plays like a guy who is used to dominating inferior competition, which is to say with a lot of confidence in himself and perhaps not enough confidence in his teammates or respect for his opponents. It will be interesting to see what happens with him when he starts playing real teams. It appears that he is a favorite of the staff, so I guess we will trust their judgment and see what happens.

Gift has put together two strong games against inferior competition. He has a barrel chest, but he's not as tall as he's listed. He finishes pretty well, and runs the floor and handles the ball decently for a big man. He seems to be a slightly taller and more athletic version of Anthony Glover (which is a compliment). I give him a pass on defense and rebounding since the team is atrocious at both of those and he gets hung out to dry. I just don't think you can evaluate a big man against the level of competition we are playing now, because when you start league play (or in our case about a third of our non-conference schedule) instead of playing against guys who are tall but untalented or who have skills but are undersized, he now has to play against the tall and talented, and that's a different story. I do think he will be fine, but he has absolutely no help down low which is a problem. Pelle cannot get here soon enough to help Gift.

nothing worse than posting a reply and then finding that while you were typing Fun* was posting the same thing.
