While the ending might have been rocky in my mind there is no doubt Lavin brought us back to relevance and made us a national program again.

Our 1st year was my favorite year as a season ticket holder for home games with all those awesome beatdowns we administered on teams that had been kicking our ass for years. As Burrell said Lavin brought " Swag " back

Started getting recruits that we hadnt gotten in a decade or so.

Really wished it could have worked out the last couple of years. At least my own personal experiences with lavin and my friends every one of us had great experiences meeting him. Really nice guy and didnt matter who you were he always stopped and gave us time and he'd remember you even if you werent a big donor

I probably never wanted to see a coach succeed more here at SJU.

Truly wish him nothing but the best

Well said, Mike. I couldn't agree more. I will miss him as our head coach.

Best of luck coach and thank you for your hard work these last five years.

A copy and paste of my post from the original thread:

Many thanks to Coach Lavin, and his staff. Whatever one thinks of this move today (I was on the fence, even though I voted for retention in the poll), we certainly had more then a few terrific moments during his time here. I myself, will cherish those, more then the down ones.

I can't say that about many other coaches we have had here.

Best of luck coach and thank you for your hard work these last five years.

Very sad day for many of us :(
All the very best Coach Lavin - you did a lot for our program, and more importanty, for the young men you recruited and coached! We are all better for the years you spent here!!

Blessings
And
All the best to you and yours

Coach Lavin, thanks for bringing St. John's back into the national spotlight. I thought you deserved better. Best of luck and, again, thanks.

P.S. Continued good health!

Be careful what you wish for!
Replacing Lavin was not a Norm situation where anyone would have been a improvement.
SJU for the last 15 years has been a terrible basketball program. You don't just throw away a coach who got you into the tournament. Heck good programs don't do that.

Lavin came here when our program had a DNR tag on it, and believed that he could bring in talent and make us a winner.

Immediately he had unexpected success with a bunch of guys who had never won a thing. Unfortunately, maybe it was too much of a task for him to restock a roster at SJU from nothing the next year, and battle the high expectations that were set from that success.

After a drought of over ten years, we got back to the dance twice in his tenure. It allowed me an opportunity to travel with my kids and watch us compete for the national championship. One and out - yes - but still we began with the same chance 67 other teams had - to win it all.

Thank you Coach for becoming a New Yorker the past 5 years, and wish you nothing but the best. Turning around a team dead for over ten years was a huge accomplishment, and I wish you could be around to see the job completed.

I was one of the few people who voted against him on the poll. I am not celebrating. I wish coach Lavin the best and hopefully gets another chance to coach again. The constant drama and lack of roster stability was the reasoning for my vote. I hope they hire someone will be get the program on track but I have little faith in this administration.

Steve will be just fine. He will succeed at whatever he does, has his health and a beautiful wife. Those are the blessings in life.

Thank you to Steve for getting me excited about Redmen hoops again. You swung for the fences with the big recruits and succeeded many times which...looking back 5 years ago is something we never could have dreamt of. Watching recruit after recruit leave our backyard. And in year one you went out and grabbed Mo Harkless. That was a badass way to spring off.

Naturally I think we lost steam and some things didn't go our way with recruits and our own players. Despite some rough luck I will appreciate the ups and downs. Good luck to Steve and thank you!

Coach Lavin is a class act and brought us back to relevance. Thought he caught more than his fair share of tough breaks over the years that could have really changed our trajectory. Nevertheless, we are better off than when he started and wish him the best of luck.

Lavin allowed my family a lot of fun these last two years as my son got hold enough to attend many of the games with me. While it was still frustrating losing many key games, we especially enjoyed the two wins over Georgetown. It was a lot of bonding time as we get ready for the Mets season. Good luck Steve. I am praying for a good replacement.

Thank you Lavin.

2011 was a great ride - the wins over UConn, Duke, ND and Pitt brought excitement here that we havent seen in years.

Pointer and DLo are two of my favs also.

Good luck if you are going to TV or coaching somewhere else next year.

I don't feel bad for Lavin BTW. I feel bad for us!
To quote Ned Stark"Winter is coming"
Ned lost his head shortly thereafter for those of you not familar with GOT

Thank you Lavin, for everything. Not been a fan for long but even though 2011 was fun this year was the greatest year I've had as a johnny fan. I won't forget it. Thank you
