Thank You and Good Luck Sim

Overthinking the importance of Sim and Glover to W/Ls.

When Jackson is dropping 25 points in those OC games, I just don't think much talk about will be about not having those 2 on the team.
Guessing you are under 40. There are clear generational or age-related differences between the younger purely-transactional generation and the older one(s).

Some of us older folks think that you are missing important things when your approach is purely transactional - and that sometimes it does not work out to your long-term benefit. But I'm off topic.

I wish I was under 40 lol.
I'm just a realist. This is a pro sport now, nothing more.

Bottom line is that if Ian doesn't commit (fingers crossed he does; especially now) and / or there isn't a public outcry for a starting PG then Sim stays. He won't start over Ian (again fingers crossed he commits) and Rick won't start him at PG. We can all cry about losing out on a great kid, but we are the one's clamoring to replace him in the rotation (well most of us; I'm sure some will say "not me"). If Ian commits, I will be thrilled because he is expected to be better than Sim. Then if Rick can pull a PG out of the ranks of another roster I will be thrilled again.

We can all be happy about watching Sim get 20 minutes a game split between SG, PG and SF and using the other 20 cheering on his teammates, but there is one guy that won't be happy with that role and that is why he went into the portal. We can hate it all we want, but SJU (on the court) will be better with the guys coming in and Sim will be better in another uniform. Hate losing a really good kid, but at this point we are in the world of employment at will. Sim gave us his notice and is finding another job. He will be missed, but this is what is best for him.

Easy kid to root for...sucks that I will be rooting for him on a different team.... appreciate when u took a jump of faith to come here with no scholarship over UNC ..to ur pass to Zuby for the win..your dancing and smiling...good luck

RJ and Kadary to me don’t belong in the same hypothetical. Could afford to play him next to those rebounders/defenders. But understand your point.

The senior version of Zuby and Hopkins should be a marked improvement on the glass over junior Zuby and Scott. You also have to think Prey makes a big jump with a full summer. He got here at the end of August last year.

Sellers and Wilcher couldn't be on the floor at the same time because they are both awful rebounders. I would agree there. Unless we added a Deivon type rebounder at point, rebounding will be weak 1-3 with who we have.

Who of the lot we are bringing in is as proven as Wilcher on defense? Do I think Jackson can get there? yes. I think Sanon will have to improve to play. Sellers is soft but has some good instincts.

For this year, maybe. Look at the Rick's history of combo guards becoming PG's by their junior and senior years.
We also need secondary ball-handlers. Sellers isn't that. Sanon isn't that. Jackson probably is.
When we see the high talent Rick and Matt are coming to bring in at the PG spot in the next 2 weeks, you will realize that Wilcher was never going to be trusted with PG responsibilities. He has a bad handle for a guard.

Again I love Sim as a person. He has been so nice in the times I have meet him, but he was NOT going to be a lead guard on a team for a coach who has Final Four aspirations. Again that is the rub with him transferring

I think people will always have fond memories of Sim. But you’re right. In terms of wins and losses everyone is replaceable.

Heck we can quantify the impact of dropping a bag on Kadary as +10 wins. And we are first and foremost in the market to replace that.

It just means we have to do the high level replacement race year after year.

It gets harder with more talent and expectations, for sure. Was a team with Kadary, Smith, and Scott going to be better than Jenkins, Dingle, and Ledlum? Yeah, I would have bet on that. Is Sellers, Sanon, and Hopkins going to be able to replace Kadary, Scott, Luis, Glover, Smith, Brady and Sim? We will just have to find out who else we sign.

I think it’s fair to be bummed over Sim’s departure and still be excited over potential new comers.

It may be best to wait until the roster is filled out before analyzing the roles

And unless the powers to be, whoever that is, allow two year player contracts and some rational transfer limits, this continues. Just think, we will right back there filling big gaps next year. Nice to have the NIL support we have, but some of the enjoyment of college ball is headed to extinction.
Unfortunately “is headed to extinction is actually “is part of a bygone era”.

There are no limits on NIL contracts. The Tennessee QB had a four year contract. How did that work out?

The reason they are usually one year contracts is for the benefit of both sides. If it doesn’t work out, both sides have a simple out. A multi year contract might make it more messy but then again, scholarships are renewable and how do you stop a kid from transferring. Tennessee let the kid go and will use the remainder of the deal elsewhere while the kid will probably get more than that wherever he transfers too.
I think coupled with a sit out if you reneg it could slow this madness.

Man this one stings. On the last game of the year during a 1st half timeout when Sim had played about 2 minutes due to foul woes, he took Lefty aside and was pounding his chest, clapping in his face, trying everything he could to psych up his young teammate. This kid will be missed and I do believe he will be a star wherever he ends up!
Team chemistry is such a big part of success. Guys like Sim and Brady are hard to replace. Bah.

I think that’s entirely on topic. It’s why people can really cheer Sim even if he wasn’t first team all big east.

It’s why I sometimes remember Kyle Cuffe with more nostalgia than Mo Harkless. Sim and Cuffe weren’t the stars on the team, but they went through it worked hard hard, really got behind Zuby when we lost in paradise, or didn’t feel like going out because a loss isn’t something to celebrate.

There’s something about college basketball you really connect with. the NCAA, collectives, and broadcaster are doing their best to extinguish that, but it will never happen. College basketball will always have players like Sim and Cuffe.

Editors note: I like Mo Harkless I was just trying to think of a 3/4 guy that was successful in a short period at St. John’s. Sorry if Mo caught a stray.

Also, I do think the players should be paid and handsomely. And I don’t know the best way to do it.

Generational? Absolutely has nothing to do with that. The days of developing prospects is over or at least for now. Rosters are being built to “reload” not rebuild. Unless you get Cooper Flagg type kids or a blue chipper that can come in right away and produce, Developing kids will be rare, especially for blue blood programs or top 25 teams. Unless the NCAA set some regulations to this new NIL( having kids commit and sign for a minimum of 2yrs), this will be the norm. I myself will miss the excitement of recruiting kids out of high school but unfortunately this is what it is for now.

Next years roster will be head and shoulders above this one when all is said and done. I will miss Sim though.
