Temple Scrimmage
Earlington had 13; Roberts 11

Rutherford 11; Champaigne 9
Obviously the most important statistic and the one that is the most comforting. 4 players who we all have concerns about going forward each produced in a healthy fashion. Wonderful to see the progress of the 2 sophomores, our sole freshman and our graduate transfer who played at a lower level. Very excited to watch and cheer for the team this season.

I love the passion but this was a win of a scrimmage game. I would consider that something positive. Nothing more nothing less. I expect we are looking at some bumps in the road this season.

Agree sjc88. I don't expect to go undefeated either, lol. Just a nice scrimmage 'win' and pleased about it.

I too expect many bumps in the road but the fact that multiple players contributed in a win over a team picked for the tournament does say something about those players and our coaching staff. Going into this season there are major questions concerning every player on the team other than Heron and Figueroa. I for one chose to find the fact that the 4 players that Paultzman posted their very good stats very comforting. Imagine if they all had scored 4 points a game ?
To each his own.

The scrimmage win over Temple confirms that the StJohn’s players are buying into CMA’s new system and that hope remains alive among StJohn’s fans in a season when expectations are rightfully low.

Experienced professionals are today managing the StJohm’s athletic department and basketball program.

11 point win over a Tournament team from last year, and a potential Tournament team this year?

Yeah, it's a scrimmage but that's very encouraging.

Temple's been a better team than we have over the past 15 years or so. An 11 point win is good news no matter how you slice it.

Just hoping to see that Dunn waiver approved in the next few days. While everyone seems to think it's a yes, I won't breathe easy until it's official. Agree with RMN that seeing good production from Champagnie, Rutherford, Roberts & Earlington is very encouraging. Also happy to see that Williams is playing. All positive stuff.

In the scrimmage today At Johns started Heron, Figueroa, Rutherford, Champagnie and Roberts. Heron had 23, Figueroa 20, 9 and 8 #sjubb

Have a feeling Figgy is gonna have one of the better seasons we’ve seen. So excited to see him as a primary focus.

Btw, James Scott’s son Monty had 17 for Temple

A few other notes from the scrimmage against Temple. St. John's shot 12-of-25 from 3 and also won battle on glass. Champagnie had 9 and 5. Not bad for a freshman. Roberts had 3 blocks, along with 11 points and 12 rebounds. #sjubb

I just read Shawnelle is a coach and physics teacher at millennium! Didn't expect to read that, he was my favorite johnny growing up.

Looks like Monty Scott may fill Shizz Alston's shoes for Temple and complement the solid guard play of Quinton Rose and Pierre-Louis and the Owls have 'size' in the front-court, with 4 guys 6'8 - 6'11.
Nice scrimmage test for our Johnnies.

It's a testament to how starved for success we are and desperate for our ship to turn around that a scrimmage gets four pages of comments! Hopefully it is the start of something good. We deserve a change in fortune.

Well I know Mullin didn’t believe in rebounds and loved his 5-out offense, but I don’t think that was the way to go with a college team. Rebounds mean a ton at both levels unless you can do certain offensive things to perfection. I think we will be in a lot of games due to our change in style, greater focus on defense, pressure and rebounding and somewhat more conventional offense, even though we will push the ball a lot.

I think it’s a nice early sign to see us play well against a solid temple team that has some nice tools. I know it doesn’t mean much, but it does mean we came to play a bit and aren’t entering things hoping for the best like some of the Lavin and Mullin teams who were often complacent.

We definitely need Dunn, a healthy Williams and will hold serve hopefully well enough until Steere gets the ball in his hands in December.

Again not a huge deal, but encouraging overall. Also nice to see Roberts hopefully turning a corner. He’s long and quite an athlete. If he can improve his game, it would be a huge boon for us:

From vantage point of many hoops guys I respect, Champagnie may be one of those recruiting surprises & a key Johnny for years to come. Developing physically into a monster, capable of playing multiple positions, talented and coachable. Great support system as well. Really looking forward to seeing him blossom over next four years.

That would be great to see. I saw him a couple of times at Loughlin(to be honest I wasn’t always sure if it was his brother) and thought they both had upside.

As for winning a scrimmage against Temple there’s is no way to spin that but as fantastic. Always better to win then lose.

As an indicator of how good Temple may be KenPom has them ranked 94th to start the season. He has St. John's ranked 95th.
