Technical Fouls

Was thinking that we get way too many player technicals. Checked the numbers, this season we have 10 of the 38 technicals called against BE players. Ponds leads with 4, then Marvin and LJ are tied for second with 2 a piece. Nova hasn't had a single player technical called this year. This is something that needs to stop immediately, just giving points away for nothing. Hopefully they can reign it in from here on out. Mullin needs to put an end to this.

It is no coincidence that a team coached by Jay Wright has not committed a technical. There is a reason he has won National Championships. Our players take their cue from the head coach. There is something to be said for running a tighter ship.

I wonder how many T-fouls Mullin has vs Wright this season?

Something to strive to achieve.

I think this is a little much. Spellman got T’d up in the National Championship game last year and I’m certain I saw them get another.

I believe 2-3 of techs on Ponds were for that stupid arm drag the refs are emphasizing and not conduct.

Also, how many teams literally had a completed win stolen from them? Just us. I can’t blame anyone on the team for not trusting the officials after that.

It's not just what they say, it's how they act. Refs don't like to be shown up. Flailing arms and walking away shaking your head vigorously will almost always earn a T. Shamorie was lucky he didn't get one that time he walked across half court and put the ball down after a call he didn't like. Mullin knew it was a potential problem because he walked out and picked it up to give to the ref.

I agree that this is an area we can improve. Not just technicals, but swallowing some emotion and understanding the art of referee relations. Some teams know how to earn a kinder whistle.

I largely agree with the sentiment of shutting your mouth or at least being respectful when protesting to refs.

As far as player vs. Player confrontations, I also think given a thin bench our guys have to be smarter than burning a personal foul on a T, and to also consider the score and other game situations at the moment, but then again I think it's also serving notice that SJU is no longer the doormat of the league and we won't take crap from other teams. Sort of like in one of the Rocky movies where he charged his opponent after the bell had rung.

I'm sure Mullin is preaching the right balance here. Arguing w refs serves no purpose for players - it's the coach's job and Mullin as a whiner has good company in Boeheim, coach k, Jay Wright and a slew of others. But not taking crap, a cheap shot, or shove from an opponent serves a purpose. See Oskley Knicks.
