Interesting that he didn't say he was a Giant's fan when growing up in Manhattan as the Polo Grounds was in Manhattan. I have a number of friends who grew up in "Stuy" Town and they were all Giants' fans to this day. Back in the day, fan loyalty was generally a "family" thing. In "da" neighborhood, we were virtually all Dodger fans, who suffered through a 4-year dry spell as far as baseball went making the once a season trip to Yankee Stadium. In 1962, we could celebrate at the Polo Grounds as the Mets brought baseball back to us. ($1.25 to sit down right field line with brown bag lunch from home). Saw the legendary Jim Hickman hit for the cycle-Grounds were built for that with the deep outfield. Gil Hodges even did it in 1963. On his way home to Bedford Avenue, Gil stopped by Lundy's in Sheepshead Bay for a "socialable". My dad was there as he knew the bartender from their shared profession and said Gil thought he was going to die and would never try that "feat" again. The move to Shea was novel at the time but it just didn't have the esthetics of Ebbets Field. Met fans readily accepted the failures of the team as we finally had a team again whose predecessors-the Brooklyn Dodgers-suffered much frustration at the hands of the hated Yankees. In the interview with Brian Kenney he named the early 60s Yankees which my Dad was big fan of especially Bobby Richardson. Those early 60s Yankees were tail end of the dynasty started end of the 40s. He also named 69 Mets which captured the city.
Ergo, Rick pick a team, this is not something to be political about. Saying you like them both does not cut it with the true fans of each team.
