Take Care of Your Health

SS&G, I agree with you wholeheartedly. In 1999, I  went to my doctor for my annual checkup and found out I had Prostate Cancer and Hepatitis C. I had radiation treatment for the cancer first and then treatment for hepatitis, I was 51 years old and fortunate that my doctor was always thorough in testing me. I have had reoccurances of the prostate cancer through the years. After the lasdt one in 2017, I had Cryotherapy where my prostate was frozen. Then during one of my 6 month checkups, I found out I had bladder cancer. ZThat was taken care of and everything has been in remission for the past three years.

I share this because as SS&G stated is important to be pro active regarding our health. I am truly Blessed to still be here.

SS&G, wishing you a speedy recovery and hope to see you on one of your visits to the VA hospital which is two blocks from where I live.

Prayers for a speedy recovery

agree with 100 percent   Get yourself checked out regularly. Don't say it's noyhing

Let's go Johnnies!!

I think it's often difficult to talk about your own Health . I applaud SSG and the other guys who have shared their situations .  The Annual Physical should be a must for a  guy over 50 , just because the Prostate Risk begins to increase at that age . And , they are doing great things with Prostate Cancer treatment .    I'm 74 years old and have more Doctors than we have 5 starters . Internist , Dernatologist , 2 Neurologists , Urologist , Cardiologist and Dentist .  I'm lucky I have Medicare and a good Supplemental Policy . In 2018 I was diagnosed with Myasenthia Gravis , a rare Auto Immune  Muscle and Nerve Disease . There is no Cure currently . It's debilitating and frustrating . Fortunately there are Medications and Trestments that help to lessen the awful symptoms . Plus , I have great Neuologists that are Specialists in the illness . They know everything about it . And , that is my suggestion to everybody facing difficult Health issues . Get treated by the best Doctors you can . The ones who would be on All American teams , if there was such a list . These are the Doctors who hang out at the great Hospitals and get involved in Clinical Trials and all the Research going on . It makes a difference !  Right now , I am in some  degree of Remission for which I am thankful . No one knows how long that lasts .. MG is a very complicated disease with not a lot of Answers . It isn't the terminal illness that ALS is but , it's still a critical disease .  So, again a tip of the hat for you who have shared these difficult Health concerns . Let's go Johnnies !

Alright-Everyone has to be healthy, at least until the Johnnies capture 2 NCAA basketball championships.

My prayers for all who are experiencing health issues and hopes that all here attend to their health.

Dear Slyfox,
thank you for sharing with your Redmen.com family your medical condition and on behalf of everyone here I wish you the best of success and good health in beating this disease. One of our best friends is a neurologist at the Montréal Neurological Institute, commonly called the Neuro, which is packed with American Drs who wish to practice at the highest level. To quote you it would be the NBA All Star team not the All American team, and our friend is the top ALS dr in Canada. Should you want me to contact her about your condition please pm as I would be glad to assist if possible.

SLYFOXX, thank you very much for sharing your story. Hope that you continue to stay in some degree of remission. You mentioned two very important things in your post. The first is the doctors treating you. After the last time my prostate cancer returned, I switched from Albert Einstein Hospital in the Bronx to Winthrop Hospital in Mineola. The doctors at Winthrop were much more informed and innovative. At Einstein, I was prescribed medication that made me ill every time I had to take it. The cost of this treatment was around $10,000.00 every three months. Once I switched to Winthrop, the physician there recommended Cyrotherapy where my prostate was frozen and I no longer had to take the medication that was making me sick.

This brings me to the second point that you mentiond, medical insurance. At 72 years old, I receive Medicare. Fortunately, my wife and I have very good secondary insurance through our Unions. We don't have to pay for prescriptions or any medical services at all. We are Blessed to have excellent coverage. My diabetes medication is over $800.00 every 3 months. There is absolutly no way I would have been able to pay for all the medical services and procedures IO need on my own. Without the medical benfits provided through my Union, I would have found myself deep in debt in order to stay relatively healthy.

Panther , glad you found the best Drs for your treatment .  It's important .  The best Drs and Hospitals are out there ..  I think we often settle for what we think is the treatment that our local Drs might provide . Not knowing there are Drs who are truly outstanding in their field that are available to us . Insurance , I spent 40 years in the Industry and like Drs , there are good Insurance Companies and poor Insurance Companies . I too , got my Secondary Insurance from my Employer .. Not Wishing to be Political but , I like my Private insurance and would be really upset to have that taken
from me by the Government ! Medicare works very well for those who are not yet eligible .

Redmennotth , I will PM you . Thank you for your reply and interest . How do I PM you ?

check your pms Slyfoxx.

I did not mention insurance in my first post for the very reason that you stated, not wanting to get political. When I was in school at St Johns, I worked full time as a Substance Abuse Counselor. By the time I graduated in 1986, I was the Director of the Adolescent Program. Two years later, I left to take a job as a Counselor at Beth Israel Medical Center because at 40 years of age what was most important to me were the benefits and knowing that I would have a pension when I retired. It worked out well because Beth Israel paid for me to attend Grad school at NYU, which lead to a promotion and more pay. In September of this year, I will have been retired for 10 years. I have been able to travel, help my wife raise our granddaughter, and attend as many St Johns games as possible, lol. Blessed to belong to a very good union.

Not sure if it will help but one of my best friends been going through something very similiar to you and while it's not covered by his insurance he's been going several times a week to a place with a hyperbaric chamber for an hour a day and he swears it's helping him

Best wishes to you, and very important post! I'm younger but felt guilty about delaying my annual visits (due to COVID) and started experiencing a few symptoms of something I thought was more serious. Went to my appointments and fortunately it was nothing, but I do feel better that I went. Can't skip your annuals, the offices are safe to go to.

Dear Adam and others
I was somewhat hesitant creating this new post I even worried the moderators would get annoyed with me
...and obviously with all the responses it was a wise decision!
I think it may be more important for our younger posters than for we older posters.
I caught skin cancer under my left eye a number of years back and I found it for myself before dermatologist did
and it never got in my bloodstream.
One of my West Point my buddies unfortunately has ALS .I just put a picture of Lou Gehrig the Iron Horse  in the Yankee topic and
I'm not sure if my West Point brother was paying attention to his health or caught the diagnosis of ALS early enough.
Death and dying has always been a big sad mystery to me.
Health - let's stay healthy and for me this topic and all the replies from my fellow posters seems to have brought us closer and to have this Redmen .com transcend college basketball and make us more like a supportive family group blessings to all.

Appreciate it .

Best wishes SS&G for a full recovery.

Amen brother for posting this and I wholeheartedly second your advice about getting checked out regularly, it saved my life.

Don't be afraid to go to the doctor, I know, if I waited I would not be here today.

Godspeed SS&G!!

I will never forget when one of my friends who had cancer told me you have to be your own activists regarding health. After my first bladder cancer procedure and chemo I changed doctors once the cancer returned. Now I have had my second procedure and have two more chemo sessions remaining at the Cancer Treatment Center of America.
Unfortunately I found out in November at the cancer center I have a chronic liver disease.  My primary doctor failed to inform me after a lab test back in February. Once I confronted him as to why he never told me His ccmment was, " Your liver enzymes were normal." Last friday I had surgery for liver cancer. In 6 to 8 weeks I will return to find out if the tumor was successfully taken out.

Jack , i think the entire Redmen.com community is behind you with prayers and good wishes for a successful treatment .  It's hard to share personal health info and we appreciate your sharing your situation . The Cancer Center of America has a very good reputation and you will get the right care from them .  I concur that getting the best Doctors available is worth the effort .  And , it's work to find them because they are rarely in our Neighborhood but , in the large Hospitals and Medical Centers . . They are the Top Guns in their  fields and when we face such health issues , we need them . They can help when others might have failed .. God Bless you .
