Tailgating/Selling Beer at Carnesecca

Since we now have an increased number of games at Carnesecca, I would like to raise the issue again that tailgating should be allowed in the Carnesecca Arena parking lot, and/or beer should be sold at games at Carnesecca. Apparently tailgating is done at lacrosse games on campus, so I see no reason why it shouldn't be done for basketball games. Would be positive for the environment and for students, and selling beer in Carnesecca would be another revenue stream for the school. Butler just announced that they will be selling beer in Hinkle this year. Thoughts on these 2 ideas?

Theo this is the smartest thing you have posted.

Sell beer to pay off slice's salary and to hire Mike Rice.

They sell alcohol if red white member as you have access to room. You should make it for everyone.

Make it happen!

Sounds good but trying to park is bad enough. Getting out is another nightmare. this won't help that ( maybe we just wont care by the end of the game).

I would leave the beer out.Would not like to hear someone had too many and was involved in an accident. Think students can suck it up an have non alcoholic beverage for the time a game lasts'

I see no significant reason why tailgating would not be permitted. Keep in mind that NYC has an open container law so be forewarned. Of course, tailgating in 10 degree weather in February might not be the greatest.

Selling beer at games sounds great but then again most of the students are underage in NY State so proofing everyone and enforcing no underage drinking requires resources for compliance. Probably not going to happen. I will also mention that the last time I tried to purchase a hot dog I could barely find one and when I did they didn't take debit cards as the credit device was "broken". We are a little behind the times here at SJU.

I've never heard of schools allowing tailgating for basketball but I'm sure it's out there.

I know a school that I'm familiar with that banned tailgating at football games for a bunch of years because of alcohol related incidents. When attendance sagged, they reluctantly brought it back.

Actually beer at CA is a bad idea. Nearly all the seats are bleachers, and without cup holders, cups of beer would be a lot more likely to spill than bottles of water or soda. Many fan altercations at the Garden are fueled by alcohol, and even if not, the amount of profanity that SOME fans shout is directly proportional to the amount of alcohol in them. I just don't see tailgating as viable during a winter sport when games start at 7 (after sunset). Parking is atrocious, as noted, and fighting rush hour traffic to get to CA really makes arriving early to tailgate in the lot not too likely. Add to that the annoying habit of tailgaters spreading out in crowded parking lots and taking an additional space for their lawn chairs, and all in all its a bad idea IMO. I honestly can't see SJU seriously considering it for CA or men's basketball.

Understand your point about limited parking, but regarding beer and spilling, then they should just sell bottles and that would be fine. If it leads to incidents, then you handle it. Teach those serving how to cut people off and stop selling beer at a certain point in the second half. Deal with it like any pro sports team deals with it. Time for this school to catch up with the times and to stop being such an archaic religious-bopping institution.

Beast you must admit except for the 50 or so reasons you just cited it certainly was a spiffy idea.

I don't know. Catholics have had altar wine for a long time :) I don't think a swipe at the Catholic church is pertinent here.

Forbes has a good article about this:

on the Tailgating - take away the less than ideal parking lot, with the start times often being evening games or weekday etc. how many games would this even happen for ?

On the beer selling - don't disagree vending overall should be better and inclusive of beer, but realistically, how many beers do you think will be sold and what profit back to the school per game ?

As a progressive and speaking of archaic religious bopping, have you considered whether the sale of alcohol might offend the sensibilities of our many Muslim fans?

Between Mahar and MCN(I)PA they could probably afford a new gym.

Hey, Carnesecca Arena was great for 1958!

All it takes is strong alumni donations to break out of that mold. VIllanova, with a much smaller alumni base, raced to a $600 mm fundraising campaign goal way ahead of schedule, and after that got a $23 million donation from a single alumni to renovate the Pavillion. So when we call St. John's Mom and Pop, which is maybe accurate, it's mostly on us as part of a much larger alumni base that is far less generous than other schools

There is always someone just waiting to take a crack at SJU, I think they have built a beautiful campus in Queens. You almost have to remind yourself, you are still in NYC.

Frank, not sure who you thought is taking a crack at SJU?

What's wrong about shouting profanities? We're watching NCAA refs. Profanity in section 114 has no correlation to alcohol.

The campus is fine, but the Gym seems to irk people. But Goff is still trying to decide whether to tear it down or revamp it.

We'll just have to wait.
