Syracuse University basketball has been under NCAA investigation for a period of “years,” a source with knowledge of the case told CBSSports.com.

That source said the school has received a letter of preliminary inquiry from the NCAA.

The specific nature of the alleged violations was not disclosed by the source but the transgressions were described as both major and wide-ranging in nature

When I lived in Syracuse, we all knew SU was a dirty program. Even Syracuse fans knew something was going on to make a kid want to spend 2-4 years in that city. There was tons of bars, topless and otherwise, because there was nothing to do in there in Hooterville.

To paraphrase captain Renault in "Casablanca": "I'm shocked, shocked to find that cheating is going on there!"

:)

You have to love the quote that "if you throw a dart at the NCAA manual, you'll hit a violation by SU". That's classic. Good riddance to those cheaters.

What timing too. I'll bet the ACC is watching this closely. Wouldn't that be a kick in the pants if before 'Cuse even plays one ACC game, they are put on probation. First Jimmy loses the Garden, now he may lose some ships or even post season play next year. Karma baby!

As for keeping players eligible all the NCAA needs to do is start with James Southerland and work back year by year.

you know its bad when a laundry list of violations are probably about to be revealed and Lori Fine blowing the whole team isn't even one of them.

What a coincidence - UCONN and Syracuse are the two most successful programs in Big East history and both are dirty. I guess you can be good, or you can be dirty, or you can be good and dirty. No Pitino jokes please.

+10.
My new all time favorite.
Still laughing.

until the ncaa put sanctions on the program, the news today isn't a big deal. there as been a laundry list of accusations but somehow syracuse manages to deflect them.

Wonderful News for "new york's team"

This will pass as every other threat by the NCAA to SU has gone away. Syracuse U leads the Big East, the NCAA and the NBA and both national political parties in lawyering up, getting the PR school hopping, waltzing with the upstate press and employing their their considerable Newhouse
School alumni in the media to make everything go disappear, all the time, every time. Frankly, they are bigger than the NCAA investigative team. They are the absolute best and all that live and know the drill in Syracuse recognize the facts. You can get a pass on rape if you play for the Orange. It's happened! They will never touch Syracuse, ever. It would kill the economy of Onondaga County in one week.

Francessa was laughing yesterday because a source apparently was quoted as saying, when asked how extensive the violations were, that if you threw a dart at the NCAA rules book, you'd hit a Syracuse violation.

That's pretty funny, but it continues to amaze me how programs like this (and UCONN etc) get away with extensive and pervasive violations for years and years without any ramification, but SJU always gets hung up by every little thing by the NCAA. I am not saying that SJU should get a pass, but I am saying that there should be equal treatment and proportionality in response.
