Syracuse Fan Already Asking About St Johns Game

I wish I had more faith in our fan base. Even our mist ardent fans (many of the posters on these boards) would rather bitch and moan than come to the games.

Its one thing when the Cuse fans dominate the Garden during the BE tourney...but its another thing when its an official SJU home game. I cringe when thinking about this game. I was so relieved to never have to play them again, i really wish we werent keeping the series going. Only one thing will shut those fans up during the game next season and thats beating them

We just have to hope they leave enough for our fair weather fans to buy if sju is playing well. If it is a battle of top 15 teams we will have our fair share of fans

WE ARE NEVER GOING TO HAVE the fan base large schools have Like Kentucky, Michigan Indiana etc etc Most of their students live on campus or close proximity When. we start winning and become a top 5 team attendance will soar.. For now fans will root
the way they chose
Some may just wear SJU logo. that's all good There are many different types of fans like people

I think this game is poorly scheduled. St. John's never draws well before Big East tournament play. This will be a huge pro Cuse crowd. If this game was scheduled in the middle of Big East play (like recent Duke and UCLA games) then I think there would be a larger St. John's crowd. To most people in NYC, college basketball isn't even on the radar until league play begins (it is different for the die-hards). Additionally, isn't this games scheduled when students are out of school?

Hopefully the SJU will be smart enough not to sell single game tix for this game. Make the Syracuse fans have to buy this as part of a 4 home game SJU package and milk every dollar from them! Make them have to buy SJU vs Prov and SJU vs Depaul, and all the games that basically dont draw well.

We need to all make sure this is the one game that we all attend. Make it your priority. If you live elsewhere and are going to plan a vacation, plan it for NYC in December. When UK fans fill the Garden, it is because they schedule the game as a vacation. So do many Cuse fans. Why can't our fans do the same?

I don't buy that cuse fans make this a vacation to NYC. There tons of cuse alums in the city and the region. They get more fans packing east end tavern on any cuse game night then we get to a sju home game.

They only get to see their team once a year every other year, so naturally they come out in large numbers.

I agree that we will never the fan base that schools like Kentucky, Indiana & Syracuse & UConn for that matter have, I don't think its because where the students live though. If anything I think it's b/c those schools have more non student/non alumni fans because they are located in cities that have nothing going on, especially when it comes to pro sports. If anyone has ever been to Storrs, Syracuse, or places like that, you can easily see why locals will grow up rooting for those respective schools and eventually becoming "adopted fans". I was at the 6 overtime UConn-Syracuse game at the Big East Tournament, & it was so funny how many people you heard talking about how they were fans b/c of them growing up, or knowing a friend who went there & my all time favorite, this guy telling me he used to drive a truck for a company that was located in Syracuse so he has been a Syracuse fan ever since. To me that is the reality of the situation, they have more die hard students/alums but they also have more of a following b/c there is nothing else happening in the towns where they are located.

Thats the truth. Teams that have been considered mid-majors almost double us up. There might not be much else going on in these places, and ticket prices much softer, but all good teams draw, and there is a buzz in the building for all their home games. Coach Steve can get us 5 stars, and we can be real good and fun to watch, but we better draw. Playing in front of 9,000 quite fans at MSG will end up hurting us. Recruits not going to want to play in that atmosphere. Of course I hope winning solves the problem, and it better. Until that does start to happen the school going to have to come up with promos and pricing to keep it from becoming an embarrassment. Before the renovation going back a few the school would put together 3 MSG games and one at the Carn for about 80 bucks. The MSG seats300's center court. I just like to be in the building and haven't thought SJU hoops have been worth anymore then that. I don't have to tell you guys the games I sat through and the thoughts about getting on the train back to Queens or jumping on the tracks. I stopped inviting friends because although lunch a beer was fine, I would always be asked how I can watch this crap. Getting a little away from attendance issue. The promotions should be pushed in Sept. and not after the season starts as though an afterthought. I know many of you guys get good season tickets, and they are not cheap. Your good fans, and deserve a good team. I hope the school takes good care of you. I hope the Fox contract wakes some people up, and the mom and pop days are over. We need wins, we need sellouts. The new league is counting on us. Go Storm.

The hotels near the Garden are full of Cuse fans when they play us. Plenty of their fans come in from out of town.

I wish SJU would have (not so) politely told them to go take a naked hike in the middle of a February day in Syracuse. Let as many people with any attachment to that program really feel the loss.

But that would take certitude on SJU's part. And we know all too well unfortunately, about the leadership vacuum at SJU.

All true. It's pretty much how I became a St Johns fan. Moved to NYC in 1985, was a big college basketball fan and started attending games, first the preseason NIT and then others. Wish more NYers could take that approach as it would strengthen support but in NY you need to be a pretty big college hoops fan for it to happen to you, otherwise way too many other distractions.

But the primary factor I think is Alums. Truck drivers don't buy season tix or travel with the team. Alums do and most schools have far more loyal alums taking up thousands of season tix than STJ. Just a byproduct of the fact that most STJ alums, including a ton of very affluent grads in the NY metro area, attended a commuter school and lack the strong connection that four years of residential education instill on folks especially on suburban or rural campuses. Maybe over a generation this will change with the dorms. There are hundreds of potential boosters locally for every JSJ, Oldfan or Repole, unfortunately the vast majority of them are just not that interested.

The school should have a big pre-sale campaign, offering first dibs to alums and fans before the tickets go on sale to the general public. Have some kind of event attached to it in order to make the game even more enticing to our fans.

Unfortunately our fans would flip the tickets for a profit.

Which brings me to this question. As I watched all of the NCAA Playoffs, ( it was easy since I had pneumonia at the time) I wondered about whether we would have had a large turnout had we been in the Elite 8? Afterall, the stands were alive with each schools turnout. It also brought me back to the days of our last appearance in the Elite 8 at Knoxville, Tennessee. Even with a team filled with Artest, Thornton and Barkley we had a measley number of fans in attendance. So with an optimistic outlook for next year and the future, what are the chances of having the arenas filled with Redmen fans? And why not?

Don't know about that. I do remember riding the LIRR with my wife and youngest son to see St.John's play G'town at the garden. The game was for first place, Mullln vs. Ewing. I was offered $450 for the tickets; very, very tempting but no way would I miss my Johnnies that night.
